Caffe Cino: The Cradle Of Lanford Wilson's Career., Kathryn Ann Absher Dec 1990

Caffe Cino: The Cradle Of Lanford Wilson's Career., Kathryn Ann Absher

Student Work

This study examines the role which the Caffe Cinco played in the development of Lanford Wilson's career. It combines the history of the Caffe Cinco with the analysis of the themes of fantasy and sexuality in four of Wilson's one act plays, showing how he learned and progressed as a playwright during the period when he was associated with the Caffe Cinco. Chapter One provides background information on the economic reasons for the development of the alternative theatre movement in Greenwich Village during the early sixties which became known as "Off Off- Broadway." The Caffe Cincowas the earliest and most …

Integration Of Distributed Expert Systems: An Open System Approach., Semir Al-Schamma Dec 1990

Integration Of Distributed Expert Systems: An Open System Approach., Semir Al-Schamma

Student Work

The integrated use of expert systems distributed on a network is a topic of practical importance. Through the proper integration methods, powerful expert systems could emerge. Several approaches exist for distributed problem solving, but most of them assume that the individual agents possess sufficient knowledge and skills to communicate and negotiate results and plans. In practice, however, what is needed is a simple, easy-to-implement, approach that allows the integrated use of a distributed (probably existing) set of expert systems or agents. In this thesis the OSDES approach (which stands for Open System of Distributed Expert Systems) is presented. It entails …

The Anglican Clergy In The Novels Of Barbara Pym, Isabel Ashe Bonnyman Stanley Dec 1990

The Anglican Clergy In The Novels Of Barbara Pym, Isabel Ashe Bonnyman Stanley

Doctoral Dissertations

Barbara Pym, a mid twentieth-century British novelist of manners, peoples her twelve novels and shorter works with Anglican clergymen and the "excellent women" of a certain age who are their parishoners. This study examines the development of clerical types in her novels, shows how these types are descended from earlier writers such as Jane Austen, the Brontës and Anthony Trollope and traces the fortunes of the mid twentieth-century Anglican Church in her work.

My research was facilitated by having access to Barbara Pym's letters, journals and personal papers in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and by having the opportunity to interview …

Anarcho-Capitalist Threads In Modern Libertarianism: The Social Thought Of Murray Rothbard, Larry M. Hall Dec 1990

Anarcho-Capitalist Threads In Modern Libertarianism: The Social Thought Of Murray Rothbard, Larry M. Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

Murray Rothbard's anarcho-capitalism represents an largely unexplored portion of American political thought. Despite an overwhelming array of publications on politics, economics, history, methodology, and other realms of social theory, his writings have received very little attention from the community of social theorists.

A significant reason for the lack of analysis concerns the unique and radical nature of Rothbard's thought. Although this research concludes that his form of anarchism is surely an American phenomenon, he combines the influences upon his writings in ways which ultimately separate him from even his libertarian colleagues. Still, he is an extremely influential figure in the …

Social Processes In Work Groups: A Model Of The Effect Of Involvement, Credibility, And Goal Linkage On Training Success, Catherine S. Clark Dec 1990

Social Processes In Work Groups: A Model Of The Effect Of Involvement, Credibility, And Goal Linkage On Training Success, Catherine S. Clark

Doctoral Dissertations

The effect of social processes in the work group on training has not been systematically studied. A model is proposed that considers the influence of pre-training social processes and supervisor credibility on expected training utility, training motivation and learning.

Survey data were collected before and after training in organizations from a large southern metropolitan area. Social process variables include group goal linkage, expected supervisor and work group training transfer climates, and involvement in training decision. In addition, job involvement and supervisor credibility were assessed. Dependent variables included expected job and career utility of training, motivation to take training, and learning. …

Examination Of Experimental Data For Irradiation-Induced Creep In Nuclear Graphite, Amir Sassan Mobasheran Dec 1990

Examination Of Experimental Data For Irradiation-Induced Creep In Nuclear Graphite, Amir Sassan Mobasheran

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation was to establish credibility and confidence levels of the observed behavior of nuclear graphite in neutron irradiation environment. Available experimental data associated with the OC-series irradiation-induced creep experiments performed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) were examined.

Pre- and postirradiation measurement data were studied considering "linear" and "nonlinear" creep models. The nonlinear creep model considers the creep coefficient to vary with neutron fluence due to the densification of graphite with neutron irradiation. Within the range of neutron fluence involved (up to 0.53 x 1026 neutrons/m2, E > 50 KeV), both models were …

A Comparison Of Andragogy And Pedagogy: Assessing The Relationship Between Individual Personality Differences, Learning Styles, And Training Types, Richard A. Cartor Dec 1990

A Comparison Of Andragogy And Pedagogy: Assessing The Relationship Between Individual Personality Differences, Learning Styles, And Training Types, Richard A. Cartor

Doctoral Dissertations

This study addresses issues related to the education and training of adults. In the past, adult education theorists and practitioners have generally prescribed that all adult learners would learn more and have more favorable responses to collaborative, participative types of training. While the strict dichotomization of learners based solely on their chronological age has recently been de-emphasized, there still remains a lack of clarity regarding which training types to use with adult learners. The study addresses the fact that the theory and practices of andragogy, or adult learning theory, were derived primarily from non-traditional age college students. Non-traditional age college …

An Oncogenic Herpesvirus Encodes Five Novel U Snrnas Called Hsurs, Susanna In-Sun Lee Dec 1990

An Oncogenic Herpesvirus Encodes Five Novel U Snrnas Called Hsurs, Susanna In-Sun Lee

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Marmoset T lymphocytes transformed by herpesvirus saimiri contain the first virally encoded U RNAs (called HSURs) to be identified. HSURs assemble into small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) of low abundance ($<$2 $\times$ 10$\sp4$ copies/cell). They bind proteins with Sm determinants and acquire a 5$\sp\prime$ trimethylguanosine cap structure. The sequences of HSUR 1 (143 nucleotides), HSUR 2 (115 nucleotides), HSUR 3 (76 nucleotides) HSUR 4 (106 nucleotides) and HSUR 5 (111-114 nucleotides) are related to each other but distinct from any previously characterized cellular U RNA. The viral genes encoding the HSURs possess conserved enhancer, promoter and 3$\sp\prime$ end formation signals unique to U RNA genes. The levels of HSURs 1-4 in HeLa transient expression systems are comparable to those found in virally transformed T cells (23%-91%). In contrast, HSUR 5 is expressed at nine-fold higher levels in transfected HeLa cells. HSURs expressed in transfected cells bind proteins with Sm determinants and acquire a 5$\sp\prime$ trimethylguanosine cap structure, as in transformed T cells. HSUR 1 or HSUR 4 particles from transfected HeLa cells migrate between 10S and 15S in velocity gradients, identical to the sedimentation of "monoparticles" produced in virally transformed lymphocytes. We conclude from these transfection experiments that no other herpesvirus saimiri or lymphocyte specific gene products appear to be required for efficient expression of the HSUR genes or for subsequent assembly of the viral U RNAs into snRNP particles. The stretch of similar sequences found on the 5$\sp\prime$ ends HSUR 1, HSUR 2, and HSUR 5 are AU-rich and contain 1-3 repeats of the AUUUA sequence motif. These AU-rich sequences have been identified as mRNA destabilization signals which specify rapid degradation of the transiently expressed mRNAs (Shaw and Kamen, 1986). Because HSURs are estimated to be in 100-1000 fold more abundant than any mRNA, they could stabilize these short-lived transcripts by competitively binding and inhibiting the factor(s) that recognize the mRNA destabilization signal. The resulting overexpression of cellular growth factors could contribute to the transforming ability of herpesvirus saimiri. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)

Composite Structure Ultimate Strength Prediction From Acoustic Emission Amplitude Data, James Lewis Walker Ii Dec 1990

Composite Structure Ultimate Strength Prediction From Acoustic Emission Amplitude Data, James Lewis Walker Ii

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The acoustic emission (AE) given off by a structure as it is stressed provides a passive means to characterize flaw growth activity in complex structures. This thesis demonstrates how the qualitative analysis of AE data can be refined to provide a quantitative tool for predicting the ultimate strength of composite tensile test specimens. From an original sample set of only six specimens, a multivariate statistical analysis was used to generate an ultimate strength prediction equation. The variables of the multivariate statistical analysis were obtained through the mathematical modeling of the specimen’s AE amplitude distributions produced during proof testing. Ultimate strengths …

Three Essays In The Economics Of The Physician Firm, William David Bradford, Iii Dec 1990

Three Essays In The Economics Of The Physician Firm, William David Bradford, Iii

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores three aspects of the physician firm. As such, the current work is concerned with the contribution that quality considerations can make toward our understanding of the medical market. The first of three essays introduces quality into the literature aimed at estimating the supply function of physician firms. This study finds that explicit modeling of quality, both theoretically and empirically, produces results superior to past work in this field and indicates that physicians behave as if they are competitive economic agents. The second essay considers the effect of Medicaid on the behavior of physicians, especially their allocation of …

Distribution And Migration Patterns Of Subsurface Fluids In The Wilcox Group In Central Louisiana, Masaaki Funayama Dec 1990

Variations of pore fluid properties as well as lithologies in central Louisiana were investigated using more than 300 conventional well logs in order to understand processes and patterns of fluid flow in the Wilcox Group in the region. A statistical evaluation of log parameters was done to provide information required for interpreting older logs in the region.

Most of the study area is located between the northern and southern Louisiana salt dome basins, and there is a general lack of significant structural deformation. The two discrete sand dominated zones in the study area are the Wilcox and the post- Vicksburg …

A Data Acquisition And Processing System For High Frequency Repetitive Waveforms, Daran Lynn Rehmeyer Dec 1990

A Data Acquisition And Processing System For High Frequency Repetitive Waveforms, Daran Lynn Rehmeyer

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: to develop a computerized data acquisition system to replace a system using an oscilloscope-mounted Polaroid camera for recording waveforms, and secondly, to develop the processing software to supplement and ultimately replace the manual interpretations of the recorded signals. The impetus for upgrading the original acquisition system is provided by two main factors. The first is the volume and cost of the film required to record an entire waveform using the Polaroid camera and second, the time consuming method of recording and splicing the individual pictures together to form a complete waveform. The current …

The Effects Of A Reinforcer On Behavior Maintained By A Second External Reinforcer, Jeanne Marie Lamere Dec 1990

The Effects Of A Reinforcer On Behavior Maintained By A Second External Reinforcer, Jeanne Marie Lamere

Masters Theses

A number of studies has shown that providing extrinsic rewards for performing an "intrinsically interesting" task decreases an individual's subsequent interest in that task when the rewards are no longer available (e.g., Deci, 1971, 1972; Lepper, Greene, & Nisbett, 1973). Based on these results, many have argued that extrinsic rewards decrease an individual's "intrinsic motivation." A fundamental premise of this argument is that "extrinsic" and "intrinsic motivation" are functionally different, a distinction that is not supported by a behavioral analysis. This study examined whether similar subsequent decrements in task performance would be observed when a behavior is maintained by one …

The Relationship Between The Mbti And A Values Conflict Resolution, Marti B. George

Master's Theses

This study investigated the relationship between Jungian type personality dimensions and an intrapersonal values conflict resolution. Seventy subjects filled out the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which assesses the sixteen Jungian personality types. Subjects returned in approximately two weeks to complete the Values Conflict Resolution Assessment (VCRA) which assesses the degree of their resolution about a particular values conflict. It was hypothesized that the thinking-feeling function of mind would positively correlate with scores on the Ethical-Emotional subscale and negatively correlate with scores on the Rational-Behavioral subscale of the VCRA. The result did not confirm our hypotheses. Reliablilty and a principal components …

The results showed that an internship was consistently rated better at the 0.05 level over related/nonintern and non-related work experiences. …

Digital Signal Processing Schemes For Fiber Optic Rotation Rate Sensor Scale Factor Linearization, David T. Dembinski Dec 1990

Digital Signal Processing Schemes For Fiber Optic Rotation Rate Sensor Scale Factor Linearization, David T. Dembinski

Masters Theses

This study examined and evaluated several scale factor linearization techniques for a fiber optic rotation rate sensor (FORS). The process of scale factor linearization retrieves rotation rate from an FORS signal. Open and closed loop digital signal processing schemes are evaluated on dynamic range, accuracy, and cost.

The results of these experiments show that open loop schemes require few components but have an inherently low dynamic range of operation. Extending the dynamic range of an open loop system is expensive in additional components. Closed loop systems require more initial components, but have a considerably superior dynamic range. It was concluded …
