Bandura and his colleagues have demonstrated that modeling techniques using fearless "mastery" models can be useful in helping clients overcome irrational fears (Bandura, Grusec and Menlove, 1967; Bandura and Menlove, 1968; Bandura, Blanchard and Ritter, 1969). Later, Meichenbaum (1971) found that initially fearful "coping" models who gradually overcome their fear are more effective than mastery models. However, research on the effects of model status has not investigated coping models. The present study attempted to discern how model status influences the effectiveness of coping models.

This work aims at laying the groundwork for a new approach to Congressional elections: turnover theory. Turnover is simply the change in membership of a Congressional chamber, and occurs in two forms: short-run turnover, in which seats change hand3 over a single election, and long-run turnover, in which incoming classes of Congressmen are decimated over several successive elections. The former is referred to in the body of this work as simply "turnover," the latter as "attrition."

This dissertation focused on compensatory relationships among the nonverbal "immediacy" behaviors—interpersonal distance, gaze, trunk lean, and body orientation--which are hypothesized to be important in the communication of interpersonal attitudes (Mehrabian, 1972; Patterson, 1973). Argyle and Dean (1965) have proposed that in social situations there are both approach and avoidance forces (e.g., affilia- tive needs, fear of intimacy) which eventually balance at some level of mutual comfort for the interactants. Once a comfortable intimacy-equilibrium has been established, any change in immediacy by one interactant requires a compensatory adjustment by the other. The present study was designed to accomplish two purposes: (1) to accumulate information regarding the effectiveness of supervision during the Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) as defined in the September 1, 1972, Revised CFY Guidelines, and (2) to accumulate and analyze suggested changes concerning the CFY requirements, and to report a summary of these recommendations to the Committee of the Clinical Fellowship Year.

A questionnaire was designed to solicit pertinent information. Of the 1,000 questionnaires mailed, 218 completed questionnaires were returned. The data were analyzed in terms of total number and percentage of responses received from the questionnaires.

The present study was designed to investigate distinctive personality and discipline characteristics of mothers who physically neglect but do not physically abuse their children. An attempt was made to acceptably define the concept, to meet the need for information regarding a representative sample of child-neglecting mothers, and to test hypotheses of a psychological nature suggested by the literature.

Ulrich and Flavell (1970) note that although aggression is more a problem today than it has ever been, and although there have been centuries of concern, little has been done to develop effective controls. One conceptual framework for explaining the occurrence and control of aggressive behavior is social learning theory. Bandura (1973) suggests that aggressive behaviors that are reinforced will be strengthened. Several studies with children support this notion (Cowan & Walters, 1963; Davitz, 1952, & Lovaas, 1961). The main purpose of this study was to produce an inquiry-oriented curriculum in map making and map interpretation for the intermediate grades. The curriculum was fully developed on the basis of field testing during a pilot study.

To accomplish this goal, eight classrooms were selected to participate in an inquiry-oriented course in mapping. This pilot study involved nearly 200 students in two one-hour sessions per week for eight weeks. The experimenter conducted all of the teaching activities and kept a detailed journal of observations, updated immediately after each session. Despite psychodrama’s popularity as a clinical procedure, few adequately controlled outcome studies have been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine whether participants in short-term psycho drama groups, relative to controls would show greater change in selfactualization, locus-of-control, and positive "back-home" behavior reported by significant others. Since protagonists emerged spontaneously from their groups, it was also possible to: (a) determine whether protagonists gained more from the psychodrama experience than less active group members, and (b) identify personality and demographic characteristics associated with participants’ willingness to assume the protagonist role.

There has been a recent proliferation of outcorie research on cognitive-behavioral treatment packages; however, little attention has been directed toward investigating the active ingredients of such conglomerate packages. The present study was designed to investigate the relative contributions of verbal and imaginal cognitive mediators in reducing publicspeaking anxiety with other treatment factors held constant.

Therapists' manuals were constructed for the two tynes of intervention so that they were identical except for the focus on either verbal or imaginal mediation. The purpose of this thesis is to explain the differences among syntactic combinations of verbs in Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota). The thesis at first examines the literature on combinations of verbs in Lakota. Thereafter criteria for distinguishing morphological combinations of verbs (compounds) and syntactic combinations of verbs are set forth. The criteria are: potential for replacement, regularity of meaning, and potential for variation in inflection. The emphasis of the thesis is on the classification of syntactic combinations of verbs which it proposes.

Research indicates that relocation of an elderly person to a nursing home constitutes a major stress to the individual which can be life threatening. The present study was designed to assess the efficacy of two different treatment approaches in attenuating that stress.

The present study was designed to demonstrate the possible applicability of the concepts and findings from attitude change research to a counseling or psychotherapy situation. Expanding and elaborating on a study by Bergin (1963), the effects of source credibility and setting credibility were investigated with respect to their independent and combined effects upon changes in the self- referring attitude of masculinity following a male subject's reception of communication indicating a discrepancy between his own and the communicator's judgment. Changes in anxiety as a result of receiving the discrepant communication were also measured.
