OES Theses and Dissertations

Certain physical, chemical and biological characteristics associated with the culture of subtidal Crassostrea virginica were assessed in a salt water impoundment and its adjacent tidal feeder creek. Large seed oysters (initial y = 57.3 mm) were transferred from a somewhat polluted estuary of Charleston Harbor to floating, mid-water, and bottom hardware cloth trays (200/tray) in a four hectare pond. Identical trays at comparable depths were placed in the tidal creek and each location was sampled monthly for growth and survival. Surface and bottom water samples were collected weekly throughout the study and hourly during four seasonal 25 hour stations. Standard …

Contribution Of The Electron Transport System To The Energetics Of Growth In Two Species Of Desulfovibrio, Burt D. Ensley Sep 1976

Contribution Of The Electron Transport System To The Energetics Of Growth In Two Species Of Desulfovibrio, Burt D. Ensley

Biology ETDs

The growth of Desulfovibrio vulgaris and D. gigas on various electron donors and electron acceptors was measured in order to determine the influence of the donors and acceptors on energetics of growth. When using lactate, pyruvate, or formate as electron donors, and sulfate, sulfite, thiosulfate, or fumarate as electron acceptors, pyruvate-sulfate medium produced the most rapid growth, and intermediate levels of growth were observed on lactatesulfate, with lowest levels on formate-sulfate. Both organisms grew best when sulfate was the electron acceptor regardless of electron donor. No growth occurred in cultures containing pyruvate and sulfite, and slight growth was observed in …

Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity Of Jensen Tumor In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Theodore D. Masek Sep 1976

Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity Of Jensen Tumor In Sprague-Dawley Rats, Theodore D. Masek

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An in vitro system for the study of the cell-mediated immune response to Jensen Sarcoma (JS) is described. The tumor grew unrestricted and lead to the demise of 80% of successfully challenged Sprague-Dawley rats (persistors) while 20% of challenged rats (regressors) destroyed the tumor by an unknown mechanism(s). Lymphocytes from both persistors and regressors were shown to be cytotoxic for tumor cells in vitro. Pretreatment of tumor target cells with "immune" serum from persistors or regressors had no effect on the in vitro cytotoxicity of lymphocytes from tumor-challenged rats. Pretreatment of lymphocytes with irmnune serum, however, was shown to reduce …

At other times activity was unimodal. Emergence was apparently largely temperature dependent and did not occur until sand temperature approximated 21°C. Retreat appeared to …

Defense Mechanism And Feeding Behavior Of Pteraster Tesselatus Ives (Echinodermata, Asteroidea), James Milton Nance Aug 1976

Defense Mechanism And Feeding Behavior Of Pteraster Tesselatus Ives (Echinodermata, Asteroidea), James Milton Nance

Theses and Dissertations

Pteraster tesselatus is noted for its external secretion of massive amounts of mucus. The mucus repels most animals, and fouls their respiratory physiology, if contact is maintained for any length of time. It provides protection essentially 100% of the time from Solaster dawsoni and Pycnopodia helianthoides, the only local stars that attempt to feed on Pteraster. The mucus, which is a simple mucopolysaccride, is produced in three different types of unicellular glands located in the epidermal tissues along the supradorsal membrane. Pores along the lateral walls of the ambulacral grooves provide fresh sea water for the dermal branchiae contained in …

Deviations from this pattern included Notropis analostanus, equally abundant throughout the year, and Lepisosteus osseus, Notropis amoenus, Notropis ardens, Notropis rubellus, Catostomus commersoni and Lepomis macrochirus, …

The Effects Of Prolonged Ultraviolet Irradiation On The Pigment System Of Pet/Wmr Mouse Epidermis, Penny Suzanne Nair Aug 1976

The Effects Of Prolonged Ultraviolet Irradiation On The Pigment System Of Pet/Wmr Mouse Epidermis, Penny Suzanne Nair

Master's Theses

Repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation brings about an increase in the DOPA-positive melanocyte population of the human. However, there is an age-dependent decline in the melanocyte population regardless of UV irradiation. In the rhesus monkey, a drop in the DOPA-positive epidermal melanocyte population has been observed after prolonged UV irradiation. The population of DOPApositive epidermal melanocytes in PET/Wmr mice reaches a peak during the first post-natal week after which the number of cells declines, fading almost completely within 3 weeks. Their occurrence in adult mice is rare. With UV irradiation (300 nm) the melanocyte population of newborn and adult PET …

In both light regimens body and liver weights decreased over the first four weeks of the experiment but both increased at the sixth week. In addition, ovary weight was highly variable but exhibited a decreasing trend and oviduct weight decreased. There were decreases in the number of previtellogonic follicles and …

Effect Of Recycling Cooking Liquor And Eliminating The Washing Stage During Chemical Deinking, Thomas H. Ollila Aug 1976

Effect Of Recycling Cooking Liquor And Eliminating The Washing Stage During Chemical Deinking, Thomas H. Ollila

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this investigation was two-fold--first to determine what effects recycling the cooking liquor in varying percentages had upon the final pulp quality, and second to find out what effect eliminating the washing stage had upon the final pulp. The results are not as definite as would have been desired due to variation in the data. Generally, the results showed recycling the cooking liquor left more fines in the pulp resulting in higher tensile, burst, and fold strength. Eliminating the washing stage left more ink particles, pigments, and fines in the pulp which resulted in higher yields, better opacity, …

Effects Of Ethephon On The Pattern Of Flowering And Fruit Set Of Summer Squash, Carl Earnest Sams Aug 1976

Effects Of Ethephon On The Pattern Of Flowering And Fruit Set Of Summer Squash, Carl Earnest Sams

Masters Theses

The plant growth regulator 2-chloroethylphosphonic acid (ethephon) was applied to summer squash to determine its effects on the flowering pattern. Treatments with all pistillate flowers pruned at anthesis, with and without ethephon applications were also compared to control plants to investigate the factors regulating flowering and fruit set of summer squash.

It was found that plants in the pruned treatments had a greater carbohydrate accumulation than plants in the nonpruned treatments, indicating that carbohydrate accumulation may be inversely associated with fruit development. Ethephon treatments produced more pistillate flowers per plant but also had a large number of aborted flowers. Thus, …

Partial Purification And Characterization Of Pectin Methyl Esterase In Southern Peas (Vigna Sinesis), Kun Kook Park Aug 1976

Partial Purification And Characterization Of Pectin Methyl Esterase In Southern Peas (Vigna Sinesis), Kun Kook Park

Masters Theses

The purposes of this study were to partially purify pectin methyl esterase (PME) of Southern peas (Vigna sinensis), to determine optimum pH and NaC1 concentration for maximum enzyme activity, to measure the energy of activation and kinetic reactions, and to ascertain the presence of multiple molecular forms of the enzyme and their isoelectric points.

PME was extracted from an acetone powder preparation and purified by a two-step ammonium sulfate fractionation and dialysis. The activity of the partially purified enzyme was significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by pH, NaC1 concentration, and the interaction between pH and NaC1 concentration. The optimum pH and NaC1 concentration were 7.9 and 0.25 M, respectively. The energies of activation were calculated to be 4,900, 5,950, and 6,900 calories/mole at pH 6.0, 7.0, and 7.0, respectively. PME had a Km of 0.781% pectin N.F. and a Vmax of 24.34 PME units.

Additional purification was …

Evaluation Of Anhydrous Ammonia As A Control Of Northern Pocket Gophers Thomomys Talpoides On Rangelands In The Wasatch Mountain, Utah, Marc C. Wride Aug 1976

Evaluation Of Anhydrous Ammonia As A Control Of Northern Pocket Gophers Thomomys Talpoides On Rangelands In The Wasatch Mountain, Utah, Marc C. Wride

Theses and Dissertations

Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) was tested as a potential replacement for residual, non specific toxicants as an effective control agent. It was postulated that NH3 would effectively control northern pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides) and also act as a fertilizer for rangeland vegetation. Compound 1080 was selected as a standard for comparison of gopher control efficiency. Over 700 burrow systems were treated or monitored. Results showed compound 1080 to be 81 percent and NH3 45 percent efficient in controlling gophers. Although fertilizing effects of NH3 were positive, the low control efficiency and high application costs make NH3 an unlikely replacement for the …

An Electrophysiological Analysis Of The Primary Input To The Cat Prepyriform Cortex, George Maeda Aug 1976

An Electrophysiological Analysis Of The Primary Input To The Cat Prepyriform Cortex, George Maeda

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Properties of the lateral olfactory tract (LOT) action potential and cortical evoked potential (EPSP) were studied using discrete stimuli applied to the tract in acute and chronic preparations. Stimulus response curves for both presynaptic (action) and postsynaptic (EPSP) potentials were sigmoidal and linearly related over the entire range. Simulated action potentials were used to determine the diameter to amplitude relationship, an intermediate step for finding the threshold as a function of tract axon diameter. Our results indicate that threshold is proportional to (diameter) -3.4 instead of (diameter) -1 as found by others in frog peripheral nerve. Further work is required …
