A Profile Of Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In The James River, Keith Allen Boisvert

Spatial and temporal variability in the antibiotic resistance of bacterial assemblages in the lower portion of the James River was examined. The antibiotic resistance of culturable coliforms was compared to the resistance in the microbial community. Antibiotic resistance was determined via colony formation on media containing antibiotics. The antibiotics ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and tetracycline were used at concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 ug/ml. Statistically significant differences in the mean number of antibiotic resistant isolates were observed among both sample sites and dates. Androgens masculinize brain development and behavior, and alterations in early hormone exposure modify development. We examined sexual dimorphisms and prenatal stress (PS) effects on the morphology of mPOA neurons. Timed-mated rats were subjected to thrice-daily heat, light and restraint stress from days 15-22 of gestation. In adulthood, the offspring were killed, the brains stained with Golgi-Cox, and the neurons traced for analysis. Sexual dimorphisms in the cumulative length and branching of the dendrites were observed: (Control Females>Control Males). Stress effects were seen in the males in somal area, perimeter, and dendritic length: (PS males>Control males). Stress effects in …

The sexual victimization of children in an increasing crime problem in this country and is now also recognized as a serious mental health issue. It has been estimated that the risk of victimization could be as high as one in ten for boys (Finkelhor, 1979) and one in three for girls (Anderson, Martin, Mullen, Romans, & Herbison, 1993). Girls are eight times as likely as boys to suffer rape (Finkelhor & Dziuba-Leatherman, 1994). Prevalence rates estimate between 15% and 38% of women (Finkelhor, 1984; Herman, 1981) and 6% of men (Finkelhor, 1984) have experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA).

In Virginia a social consciousness began to develop during the war which led to both private and public attempts to aid these men. Following the war this philanthropy was continued by the General Assembly with a series of acts intended to provide for the disabled veterans of the Commonwealth. Initially a small scale program to provide artificial limbs to amputees, this initiative quickly expanded to include disabled veterans of all types. Difference sets are mathematical structures which arise in algebra and combinatorics, with applications in coding theory. The fundamental question is when and how one can construct difference sets. This largely expository paper looks at standard construction methods and describes recent findings that resulted in new families of difference sets. This paper provides explicit examples of difference sets that arise from the recent constructions. This thesis concerns the white women of Fredericksburg, Virginia, during and immediately after the Civil War. Between 1861-1865, Fredericksburg existed in the no-man's land between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The town was bombarded, occupied by enemy forces, and ransacked. Military control of the town changed hands 10 times. Four major battles were fought around Fredericksburg, resulting in over 100,000 casualties. Throughout the conflict, Fredericksburg's white women were in the thick of the action - supporting their troops, nursing the wounded, and managing the increasingly desperate struggle to provide food and shelter for their families. This is a study of how the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) attempted to implement a major crime initiative, the Comprehensive Community Corrections Act (CCCA). The aim is to explain the implementation process in DCJS with reference to organizational models developed by Richard Elmore (1978). A careful analysis of the day-to-day operation and decision-making processes of DCJS, with particular emphasis on the implementation of the CCCA, shows that DCJS normally corresponds with the expectations of the "organizational development" and "bureaucratic process" models described in Elmore's typology of organizations. Thirty-two men were members of General George Washington's military "family" during the Revolutionary War, serving as his aides-de-camp and military secretaries. Washington personally selected these men, applying high selection criteria regarding their education, intellectual ability, and writing skills. Representing the American gentry, the gentlemen of the family had influential political, military, or family connections. Washington's family usually consisted of six to eight aides and secretaries who typically served about sixteen months. Those who survived the Revolution became prominent leaders of the new nation, serving as Cabinet officers, executive branch officials, senators, congressmen, governors, and mayors. This study examined the effectiveness of Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) as surrogates for fish in concentrating polychlorinated biphenyls. Golden shiners (Notemigonus crysolucas) and SPMDs were exposed to three different concentrations (0.5, 1.5, and 3.0ppm) of Aroclor 1254 for 1, 3, and 5 days under laboratory conditions. Concentrations of Aroclor 1254 were measured in the SPMDs and fish tissue using extraction techniques and gas chromatography. The concentrations of PCB in SPMDs and N. crysolucas were positively correlated. This relationship compared favorably with data from other studies. Realistic communication is one of the most difficult aspects of simulating group behavior because the patterns produced by group communication are complex and not easily definable. In this paper, we present a model, developed using artificial life methodology, for creating simulations of group communication. Our model employs autonomous, artificial agents to produce emergent group behavior that resembles the communication patterns of a group, specifically, a flock of birds. During the Second World War, the French Resistance failed to unify or work effectively with Charles de Gaulle, the movement's symbolic leader. The Resistance maintained a troublesome relations with Great Britain. Neither side overcame a series of conflicts, battling egos, and internal confusion. As a result, Britain and the Resistance never developed a mature relationship that could aid the Allied invasion of French North Africa in November 1942 (Torch) and Normandy in June 1955 (Overlord). This thesis compares and contrasts the tactics and techniques used by Virginia public interest lobbyists in the passage of the 1990 VIRGINIA INDOOR CLEAN AIR ACT with Alan Rosenthal's analysis of state legislative lobbying found in his book, THE THIRD HOUSE. Primary sources include personal interviews and legislative documents, while newspaper articles provide the secondary source of information. Lobbyists used the indirect and direct lobbying techniques, suggested in Rosenthal's framework, to persuade others to their point of view. While criticism in the past tended toward a literal reading of the text, viewing it as a misogynist Merchant's story attesting to the innate depravity of women, more recent feminist criticism has leaned toward a reading which endeavors to defend the actions of May, claiming an evolvement on her part towards autonomy and self-knowledge. In this paper we explore the existence of exactly k-to-1 continuous functions between graphs, and more specifically 2-to-1 continuous function between graphs that are irreducibly 2-to-1, meaning that no restriction of the function to a subgraph is 2-to-l. We show how to construct such functions in some general cases, and then more specifically onto rectangular grids. We have in mind an application to distributed networks and signal verification.
