Ad libitum fed and individually penned crossbred gilts (39 ± 2 kg) were exposed to a constant air temperature of 30.8*" C (CON) and equal-mean diurnal cyclic temperatures cycling from 26° to 33*^ C (RPK) and from 23.4° to 40° C (RNT). Fluorescent lighting with an intensity of 800 to 1100 L/m/m2 was provided from 0600 h to 2100 h. Measurements of feed intake, heat loss rates, water usage, growth, and ingestion behavior were made for a five-day period and replicated six times. Little information is available regarding comparative forage quality of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) leaves and stems of the nine germplasms from which most North American cultivars have been developed. In a greenhouse trial, forage quality of leaves and stems of the nine germplasms was compared when grown in a common environment and harvested at the same phenological stage. Germplasm sources (and representative cultivar) tested were: Indian (Sirsa #9), African (African), Peruvian (Hairy Peruvian), Flemish (DuPuits), Turkistan (Lahontan), Chilean (Kansas Common), M. varia Martin (Grimm), Ladak (Ladak), M. falcata L. Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum trifolii Bain, decreases forage yield and stand persistence of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) throughout much of the USA. Little is known about the effects of anthracnose or host-plant resistance on forage quality, including phenolic monomer concentrations. In a controlled environment, we compared forage quality, including phenolic monomers, of alfalfa cultivars Saranac (susceptible) and Saranac AR (resistant) with and without anthracnose (Race 1). In the absence of inoculation, leaves of the two cultivars did not differ significantly for any parameter measured. Leaves had more total phenolics than did stems. However, for site-specific application of inputs, it is necessary to develop systems to sense the variation of important properties in real time. Several studies have shown that ion selective electrodes can be used to measure soil nitrates. This work involves an investigation in the use of Ion Selective Field Effect Transistors (ISFETs), to measure soil nitrate levels.

Acoustical characteristics of vocalizations of sows, piglets, and nursery pigs under selected husbandry practices were analyzed with a digital signal processing system. Erect glandular-haired Medicago species and hybrid populations have been developed that possess a high degree of resistance to the alfalfa weevil [Hypera postica (Gyllenhal)] and potato leafhopper [Empoasca fabae (Harris)]. Trials were conducted at the North Agronomy Farm, Manhattan, KS, in June and August 1986 to determine if erect glandular hairs on diverse perennial Medicago populations affect forage preference of sheep (Ovis aries). A user friendly expert system to assist the farmer in tractor selection was developed based on the evaluation procedure developed by Rider et al. (1979). This evaluation procedure utilizes Nebraska Tractor Test data from 1980 to 1986 along with information provided by the farmer to make selection decisions. The expert system provides the farmer with a list of tractors that are best suited for a specific operation. However, it is only designed to aid the farmer in the tractor selection process, not to provide a definite solution.

Leghorn layers were monitored for heat loss, feed intake, egg production and respiratory rate at various environmental temperatures (TJ after first being exposed to aerial ammonia (NH3). The initial exposure was to 10 or 60 ppm NH3 at a T, of 25 °C for 30 days to simulate a winter environmental condition in a poultry facility. Hens were then allowed to recover in an environment of 5 ppm of NH3 at a T^ of 22 °C for seven days to simulate a spring environmental condition. A tandem tractor composed of two tractors hooked together and controlled from the rear tractor has been built at the Agricultural Engineering Department, Michigan State University. It was tested on sod, plowed, and plowed and disked land. Results indicate that the tandem tractor can provide the farmer with a versatile power unit: one four-wheel drive tractor for pulling heavy loads; and two two-wheel drive tractors for pulling light loads.

To study the soil compaction problem, the amount of compaction change at every point in the soil resulting from loads applied to the surface must be determined. If this change can be calculated, the effects obtained from varying the loads can be observed and thereby information gained which will permit predicting and possibly controlling compaction. Such calculations require a suitable theory of soil mechanics to formulate a mathematical model describing the soil.
