Gradual Changes In Repeat Customers' Adoption Behavior Toward Responses To Mobile Direct Mail Coupon Promotions, Shahriar Akter
Gradual Changes In Repeat Customers' Adoption Behavior Toward Responses To Mobile Direct Mail Coupon Promotions, Shahriar Akter
Shahriar Akter
Service businesses record the number of visitors as a measure of the performance of their business. However, summarized observations such as the total number of visits per month provide little insight on individual-level visiting behavior. In addition, behavior may change over time, especially in a swiftly changing environment induced by mobile promotions. This paper presents an individual level model for shop visiting behavior based on data of a beauty salon. The model focuses on gradual changes toward responses to mobile direct mail (DM) coupons based on the shop visit interval (SVI) of the beauty salon. This means that as someone …
Pride, Prejudice, And Japan's Unified State, Suzanne M. Sable
Pride, Prejudice, And Japan's Unified State, Suzanne M. Sable
University of the District of Columbia Law Review
Japan is undoubtedly one of the foremost economic powers in the world and is internationally recognized as a democratic leader among modern nations. The economy's rapid growth in the mid-twentieth century has been attributed to its booming technical industries, including its electronic and automobile industries. However, Japan is unique in that it has retained traditions associated with typically less advanced nations-namely, a regressive human rights agenda. Although cultural, ethnic, and social minorities continue to exist on Japanese soil today, Japan's social policy of Nihonjinron allows the majority of the population to disregard such minorities and perpetuate the government's vision of …

The School Counselor As An Emerging Professional In The Japanese Educational System, Jeannine R. Studer
The School Counselor As An Emerging Professional In The Japanese Educational System, Jeannine R. Studer
International Education
The writer discusses the emergence of school counselors in Japan. She emphasizes that clinical psychologists are fulfilling the emerging school counselor role. She then discusses the emergence of school counselors in the U.S. and outlines disturbing influences in students' lives that concern school counselors in both countries. Finally, she considers whether disputes and issues that affected U.S. school counselors could act as a guide for their Japanese counterparts.
Modeling The Volatility Of Real Gdp Growth: The Case Of Japan Revisited, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller
Modeling The Volatility Of Real Gdp Growth: The Case Of Japan Revisited, Wenshwo Fang, Stephen M. Miller
Economics Working Papers
Previous studies (e.g., Hamori, 2000; Ho and Tsui, 2003; Fountas et al., 2004) find high volatility persistence of economic growth rates using generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) specifications. This paper reexamines the Japanese case, using the same approach and showing that this finding of high volatility persistence reflects the Great Moderation, which features a sharp decline in the variance as well as two falls in the mean of the growth rates identified by Bai and Perronâs (1998, 2003) multiple structural change test. Our empirical results provide new evidence. First, excess kurtosis drops substantially or disappears in the GARCH or exponential …
'Race' On The Japanese Internet: Discussing Korea And Koreans On '2-Channeru', Mark J. Mclelland
'Race' On The Japanese Internet: Discussing Korea And Koreans On '2-Channeru', Mark J. Mclelland
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
This paper investigates discourse about race on the Japanese Internet, particularly regarding resident Koreans and their relationship to the Japanese. One board relating to arguments about Korea on the notorious ‘Channel 2’ BBS, Japan’s most visited Internet site, is investigated, since it is one of the main public forums in which racial vilification takes place, perpetrated by both Japanese and Korean posters. Nakamura’s (Cybertypes) contention that the Internet is ‘a place where race is created as an effect of the net's distinctive uses of language’ is taken as a starting point to investigate the differences between Japanese and Anglophone notions …
Binding The Dogs Of War: Japan And The Constitutionalizing Of Jus Ad Bellum, Craig Martin
Binding The Dogs Of War: Japan And The Constitutionalizing Of Jus Ad Bellum, Craig Martin
Craig Martin
There is still very little constitutional control over the decision to use armed force, and very limited domestic implementation of the international principles of jus ad bellum, notwithstanding the increasing overlap between international and domestic legal systems and the spread of constitutional democracy. The relationship between constitutional and international law constraints on the use of armed force has a long history. Aspects of constitutional theory, liberal theories of international law, and transnational process theory of international law compliance, suggest that constitutional design could legitimately be used as a pre-commitment device to lock-in jus ad bellum principles, and thereby enhance compliance …

Mathematics Student Teaching In Japan: A Multi-Case Study, Allison Turley Shwalb
Mathematics Student Teaching In Japan: A Multi-Case Study, Allison Turley Shwalb
Theses and Dissertations
Nearly all research that seeks to assist in reforming mathematics student teaching in the United States has been limited in that it (1) does not consider student teaching models in non-Western cultures, and (2) has not sufficiently studied the unique context of mathematics in student teacher-cooperating teacher interactions. This multi-case study addresses these issues by analyzing the interactions between three cooperating teachers and two student teachers in the mathematics student teaching setting in Japan. Four conclusions are presented to generate a coherent picture of the principles of teaching and learning to teach that are emphasized during this Japanese student teaching …
Managing Transformational Change: The Role Of Human Resource Professionals, Thomas A. Kochan, Lee Dyer
Managing Transformational Change: The Role Of Human Resource Professionals, Thomas A. Kochan, Lee Dyer
Lee Dyer
[Excerpt] Can the United States maintain its traditional position of economic leadership and one of the world's highest standards of living in the face of increasing global competition? Concerned observers cite the following negative news: lagging rates of productivity growth, non-competitive product quality in key industries, structural inflexibilities, and declining real wage levels and flat family earnings (Carnavale, 1991). Further, they offer a plethora of proposed solutions covering both broad public policies and more specific firm-level policies and practices.

The More Kids, The Less Mom's Divvy: Impact Of Childbirth On Intrahousehold Resource Allocation, Tomoki Fujii, Ryuichiro Ishikawa
The More Kids, The Less Mom's Divvy: Impact Of Childbirth On Intrahousehold Resource Allocation, Tomoki Fujii, Ryuichiro Ishikawa
Research Collection School Of Economics
We investigate how the impact of childbirth on intrahousehold allocation for married Japanese couples. We developed reduced‐form and structural‐form specifications from a unified theoretical framework. Under a weak set of assumptions, we can focus on private goods to track the changes in intrahousehold resource allocation. Our estimation results show that that allocation of resources within household tend to move to the disadvantage of women after a childbirth. One additional child is associated with a reduction in the wife's private expenditure share. Our estimation results reject the income-pooling hypothesis, and show that women are more risk averse than men.

Public Awareness Of Human Rights: Distortions In The Mass Media, Eric Heinze, Rosa Freedman
Public Awareness Of Human Rights: Distortions In The Mass Media, Eric Heinze, Rosa Freedman
Prof. Eric Heinze, Queen Mary University of London
This article examines distortions of human rights reporting in the mass media. We examine human rights coverage in four of the most influential newspapers, two from the US and two from the UK. The US papers are The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. The British papers are The Financial Times and The Guardian.
Most current scholarship on international human rights draws its information from specialized sources, such as the published reports of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations. Wholly absent has been any systematic study of the mass media. To date, no one has examined the dominant media agencies, …

At the Second East Asia Summit (EAS) meeting held in 2007, the 16 Country Leaders agreed to strengthen regional educational cooperation. Acting on behalf of the EAS, the ASEAN Secretariat has commissioned this project to develop strategies for EAS participants to enhance regional economic competitiveness and strengthen community building in a balanced and sustainable manner through cooperation in education. The project’s scope encompasses regional cooperation in basic education (primary and secondary), technical and vocational education and training, and higher education. This report draws on a literature review of experiences with international educational cooperation, analysis of published data, consultations with education …
The Anti-Network: Private Global Governance, Legal Knowledge, And The Legitimacy Of The State, Annelise Riles
The Anti-Network: Private Global Governance, Legal Knowledge, And The Legitimacy Of The State, Annelise Riles
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Global private law has become the source of both anxiety and euphoria. Inherent in this fascination is the assumption that global private law threatens the legitimacy of the state by taking over its functions through new techniques of governance. In this article, I build upon research in one arena of global private governance, the production of legal documentation for the global swap markets, to challenge the most prominent assumptions about private law beyond the state. I argue that rather than focusing on how global private law is or is not an artifact of state power, a body of private norms, …
