Further Observations On The Breeding And Migration Of The Bermuda Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, W. H. Sutcliffe Jr. Jan 1953

Further Observations On The Breeding And Migration Of The Bermuda Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, W. H. Sutcliffe Jr.

Journal of Marine Research

Some results of investigations of breeding, distribution, and migration of Panulirus argus in Bermuda during 1951 and 1952 are given. A graphic schedule of breeding events for females includes the times of appearance of the first and second spermatophores and the first and second eggs.

Relation Of Fishes And Other Organisms To The Scattering Of Underwater Sound, Gordon H. Tucker Jan 1951

Relation Of Fishes And Other Organisms To The Scattering Of Underwater Sound, Gordon H. Tucker

Journal of Marine Research

An analysis of concurrent sound-scattering records and biological collections in the sea show a correlation of the deeper and more intense scattering of sound with fishes and of the upper and lighter scattering with a dominant population of euphausiids. The main group of fishes concerned are the Myctophidae, which possess all of the essential qualifications of scatterers.

Sound As A Tool In Marine Ecology, From Data On Biological Noises And The Deep Scattering Layer, Martin W. Johnson Jan 1948

Sound As A Tool In Marine Ecology, From Data On Biological Noises And The Deep Scattering Layer, Martin W. Johnson

Journal of Marine Research

In studies of specific populations or communities of different animals, the investigator is concerned largely with relative concentrations of individuals and with their feeding and breeding behavior, migratory habits, etc., as individuals or as groups. Information on these aspects is fundamental to an analysis and understanding of the faciors that operate as controls within the population.

Water Tables In Marine Beaches, K. O. Emery, J. F. Foster Jan 1948

Water Tables In Marine Beaches, K. O. Emery, J. F. Foster

Journal of Marine Research

Beach slopes, sand movements, and sand composition have been studied by a number of organizations and individuals, but the interstitial water and the possible interrelations between beach characteristics and changing water levels within the beach seem to have received little attention....

A Salinometer For Use In Brackish Water, William S. Von Arx Jan 1947

A Salinometer For Use In Brackish Water, William S. Von Arx

Journal of Marine Research

In principal this salinometer is a "battery" composed of a pair of dissimilar metals immersed in the brackish water of the field as an electrolyte. Between these dissimilar metals there exists a potential difference which is practically independent of the concentration of salts in the electrolyte over a very wide range. However, the salt concentration has a marked effect upon the conductivity of the electrolyte. If the measuring circuit has constant resistance, the only change of resistance in the total circuit is that due to the change of conductivity of the water in which the cell is immersed. Since the …

Correlations In Aquatic Ecology With An Example Of Their Application To Problems Of Plankton Productivity, Gordon A. Riley Jan 1939

Correlations In Aquatic Ecology With An Example Of Their Application To Problems Of Plankton Productivity, Gordon A. Riley

Journal of Marine Research

Much of the ecological work of the present time is concerned with the direct observation of natural variations in environment and biota, followed by an examination of the relationships between variables and speculation as to their meaning….
