Using Interviewing In Public Health Research: Experiences Of Novice Researchers, Caroline I. Wood, Nancy Daley-Moore, Rachel Powell
Using Interviewing In Public Health Research: Experiences Of Novice Researchers, Caroline I. Wood, Nancy Daley-Moore, Rachel Powell
The Qualitative Report
In this article, we provide the experiences of three novice public health researchers conducting studies with several vulnerable populations: women, people with disabilities, and children. We describe all phases of our interview studies including developing data collection guides, planning the interview in an appropriate setting, conducting the interviews, and bringing the interview to a close. Specific components of the interviews that are discussed include establishing rapport and minimizing the power imbalance inherent between interviewer and interviewee, including the added power imbalance that vulnerable populations experience. Issues of maintaining quality and rigor, as well as ethical considerations for working with our …

HSC Education Days
This poster will introduce the Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center’s Virtual Reality Lab, a new service brought online by the library in November 2018. HSLIC hopes to promote this new emerging technology and to further the collaboration between HSC departments and the library. This poster will highlight existing use cases at HSLIC as well as use cases in other schools/programs. The library hopes that this presentation will encourage the use of existing virtual reality applications in HSC curricula and serve to open a dialogue regarding possible future projects to develop custom applications. Participants can expect to leave this presentation …

Dermatology Articles
BACKGROUND: There are many intraoperative and postoperative techniques to aid hemostasis in dermatologic procedures. An updated understanding is critical for the surgeon.
OBJECTIVE: To provide an updated review of methods for hemostasis and therapies for postprocedural purpura and ecchymosis applicable to dermatology.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of Ovid MEDLINE was performed to review the English-language medical literature of hemostatic options and their use in cutaneous surgery. All available publication years were included from 1946 to present.
RESULTS: A comprehensive and current list of hemostatic options used in the intraoperative and postoperative period is provided along with traditional and emerging …

Oral herpes is a highly prevalent infection caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1). After an initial infection of the oral cavity, HSV-1 remains latent in sensory neurons of the trigeminal ganglia. Episodic reactivation of the virus leads to the formation of mucocutaneous lesions (cold sores), but asymptomatic reactivation accompanied by viral shedding is more frequent and allows virus spread to new hosts. HSV-1 DNA has been detected in many oral tissues. In particular, HSV-1 can be found in periodontal lesions and several studies associated its presence with more severe periodontitis pathologies. Since gingival fibroblasts may become exposed to salivary …

Hypogammaglobulinemia In Blt Humanized Mice – An Animal Model Of Primary Antibody Deficiency, Francisco Martinez-Torres, Tomonori Nochi, Angela Wahl, J. Victor Garcia, Paul W. Denton
Paul W. Denton
Primary antibody deficiencies present clinically as reduced or absent plasma antibodies without another identified disorder that could explain the low immunoglobulin levels. Bone marrow-liver-thymus (BLT) humanized mice also exhibit primary antibody deficiency or hypogammaglobulinemia. Comprehensive characterization of B cell development and differentiation in BLT mice revealed other key parallels with primary immunodeficiency patients. We found that B cell ontogeny was normal in the bone marrow of BLT mice but observed an absence of switched memory B cells in the periphery. PC-KLH immunizations led to the presence of switched memory B cells in immunized BLT mice although plasma cells producing PCor …

Collaborative Allied Health And Nursing Interprofessional Health Education: Beginning The Journey, Anita Hazelwood, Lisa Delhomme, Scott Sittig
Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration
The Allied Health and Nursing Departments within the College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have begun a journey towards interprofessional health education (IPE) with the vision of offering multiple IPE courses for the allied health and nursing students. The need for interprofessional education in the health professions has been recognized for many years. In 1998, the Pew Health Professions Commission identified the need for interdisciplinary teams as an endeavor to strive for in the 21st century. A variety of terms have been used to describe this pedagogic practice including shared learning, interprofessional …
Methodologies For Metal Functionalization Of Phosphorus Based Photopolymer Networks, Vanessa Béland
Methodologies For Metal Functionalization Of Phosphorus Based Photopolymer Networks, Vanessa Béland
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Photopolymer networks with phosphonium cation, alkyl phosphine and olefin functionality were designed, synthesized and functionalized with metals by metathesis, coordination and hydrometallation reactions, respectively. The materials were strategically designed so that the metal functionalization step could be monitored and quantified. In some cases, this involved characterization by IR, NMR, or X-ray spectroscopic techniques, or by comparison to molecular analogues. It was found that by using a bi-functional photopolymer network, the material could be bi-metallized by orthogonal mechanisms. All metallized polymer networks were tested for their suitability as precursors to metal-containing ceramics. The polymers were pyrolyzed, and on analysis it was …

Healthcare policy in the United States is aimed towards the costs of care for citizens as well as access to quality care. The healthcare system includes services provided by medical professionals in order to treat, diagnose, and prevent mental and physical illness and injury. There has been an increasing strain on consumers due to the rising cost of healthcare in the country.

Image Anaysis For Predicting Body Weight In Humans, Jeffrey S. Barrett, Chee Ng
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents
Systems and methods for determining body weight predictions and human conditions are disclosed. A body weight may be predicted by capturing at least one image of a human, and determining, from the image, a body weight prediction of the human by processing the at least one image with a data processor. The body weight prediction may further be based on an age-based weight factor. A model such as a neural network model may be used to predict body weight.

African American Disparities In Healthcare, Emma E. Bedell
African American Disparities In Healthcare, Emma E. Bedell
Student Publications
African Americans constantly experience disparities in health care due to various factors. They typically face differences in insurance coverage, quality of care, geographic variation, and stereotyping by providers. These social inequalities are ultimately inevitable, however; changes need to be made to better the care that Black patients receive. The differences Black men and women receive in healthcare can put their life in danger or even give them unnecessary medical treatment. There is no simple solution to fix this problem, but action needs to be taken immediately.
