Increasing Utilization Of Motivational Interviewing To Promote Pediatric Oral Health, Ulyses Reamico

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) remains high even in developed countries such as the United States. An interprofessional education (IPE) project between University of San Francisco (USF) School of Nursing and Health Professions and the University of the Pacific (UoP), Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry was initiated four years ago to enhance nurse practitioner (NP) and dental students’ pediatric oral-systemic health assessment and health promotion communication skills. Since then, USF NP students received pediatric oral health assessment training and spent clinical rotations at UoP to provide pediatric oral care alongside dental students. This doctor of nursing (DNP) project …

Theory Based And Tailored Dental Messages For Children And Parents: Developing A Framework For A Brief Behavioral Intervention In Clinical And Non-Clinical Settings, Julia Mainelli

Honors Scholar Theses

Dental caries are highly prevalent worldwide, across all age and race/ethnicity groups. A relationship between caries and obesity has been found, with overall diet quality being one factor linking this relationship. The need for widespread changes in behavior regarding oral care and nutrition behaviors among youth is evident. These behaviors are not only determinants for dental health but overall health. The variation in self-reported behaviors and liking using a rapid diet and lifestyle screener, the Pediatric Adapted Liking Survey, provides opportunity for the provision of tailored messages. Literature signifies that these are most efficacious when they are theory based, leading …

The Silent Epidemic: Disparities And Obstacles In Obtaining Oral Care, Heather Hicks

Theses and Dissertations

American’s agree that dental health is important and vital to our overall wellbeing. However, not every American is achieving the same degree of oral health. Obstacles that American’s face include dental health disparities, limited access to affordable dental care, and limited access to dental insurance. This study examined how disease risk is shaped within the culture of oral health in Florida. This study examined those who provide dental care, those who cannot afford dental health insurance but earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid, and those with dental insurance. Hypotheses two and three were proven to be true, while …

Touro College of Dental Medicine Publications and Research

BACKGROUND: Screening for medical conditions (MCs) of public health importance is a first step in disease prevention and control. Prior studies in the United States found oral health care providers (OHCPS) embrace screening for increased risk of medical conditions in the dental setting. Our objectives were to assess Saudi Arabian (SA) dentist's attitudes, willingness and perceived barriers towards implementing screening for MCs into their dental practices.

METHODS: A self-administered, 5-point Likert Scale (1 = very important/willing to 5 = very unimportant/unwilling) questionnaire was given to a convenience sample of 190 practicing dentists. Friedman nonparametric analysis of variance was used to …

A Provider-Driven Approach To Preventative Oral Care In Nursing Home Facilities, Molly Anderson, Brandon Mccrossin, Kary Franchetti, Ruth Hanselman, Suneela Nayak, Stephen Tyzik, Amy Sparks

Operations Transformation

Oral care is an essential part of preventative medicine as it minimizes risk for pneumonias and other infections. In nursing home settings, often oral health care is not routinely provided due to a number of issues. A health care system that either owns or contracts nursing home facilities initiated a performance improvement plan to address this patient care concern.

The first goal of this project was to reduce the variation in oral care between nursing home facilities within the system. The second goal was 100% of their patients will have one oral health care exam documented in EPIC once a …

Development Of A Recommender System For Dental Care Using Machine Learning, Man Hung, Julie Xu, Evelyn Lauren, Maren Wright Voss, Megan N. Rosales, Weicong Su, Bianca Ruiz-Negrón, Yao He, Wei Li, Frank W. Licari

Extension Research

Resource mismanagement along with the underutilization of dental care has led to serious health and economic consequences. Artificial intelligence was applied to a national health database to develop recommendations for dental care. The data were obtained from the 2013–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to perform machine learning. Feature selection was done using LASSO in R to determine the best regression model. Prediction models were developed using several supervised machine learning algorithms, including logistic regression, support vector machine, random forest, and classification and regression tree. Feature selection by LASSO along with the inclusion of additional clinically relevant variables identified …

Incorporating Oral Health Care In Pediatric Primary Care Practice, Salamatu Yusif May 2019

Incorporating Oral Health Care In Pediatric Primary Care Practice, Salamatu Yusif

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

The most common chronic disease in childhood is dental caries and is more prevalent than asthma and hay fever (HHS, 2000). Data show that in the United States from 2011-2014, 24% of children aged 2-5 years had experienced dental caries in their primary teeth, with 11% having untreated caries (Dye et al., 2017). Primary care clinicians have an important role to play in promoting children’s oral health as much as dentists because they have more contact with children. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to integrate an evidence-based oral health program for children in a pediatric primary care …

Periodontitis And The Elderly: An Overview Of The Disease And Its Impact On An Aging Population, Nicole Grace Weissenfluh Apr 2019

Periodontitis And The Elderly: An Overview Of The Disease And Its Impact On An Aging Population, Nicole Grace Weissenfluh

Senior Honors Theses

Periodontitis affects millions of Americans each year, and is especially prevalent among the elderly. Since periodontitis is a chronic, progressive condition, uninterrupted disease progression leads to irreversible oral damage; therefore, periodontitis often reduces the oral health-related quality of life. Furthermore, research strongly suggests a correlation between periodontitis and other systemic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus), highlighting the importance of understanding, treating, and preventing periodontitis. This thesis explores the pathology and etiology of periodontitis, with special focus given to the prevalence and impact of the disease in the elderly population. Additionally, the connection between periodontitis and other systemic diseases …
