Improving Diagnostic Accuracy In Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Jessica Hurtubise Sep 2018

Improving Diagnostic Accuracy In Hiv-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders, Jessica Hurtubise

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) affect 50% of individuals with HIV. HAND is characterized by cognitive and functional impairment and is diagnosed through neuropsychological assessment. The use of performance validity tests (PVT) is recommended to determine the credibility of cognitive profiles during neuropsychological testing. However, little is known about the utility of PVTs within an HIV+ population. The objective of the present study was to compare the base rate of failure on embedded validity indicators (EVIs) between individuals diagnosed with HAND, neurocognitively normal individuals with HIV, undergraduate controls, and undergraduates asked to feign cognitive impairment. The relationship …

Effect Of Aspect Ratio On The Flow Structures Behind A Square Cylinder, Junting Chen Sep 2018

Effect Of Aspect Ratio On The Flow Structures Behind A Square Cylinder, Junting Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the effect of aspect ratio on the flow past square cross-section wall-mounted cylinders is evaluated using computational fluid dynamics. The simulations are carried out using the Improved Delayed Detached Eddy (IDDES) turbulence model. Three cases with different heights of the cylinder (aspect ratio = cylinder height/width = 1, 2, and 4) were studied. The IDDES prediction of the flow statistics is validated against a set of wind tunnel experimental results from a recent report on the flow at a Reynolds number of 12,000 for a cylinder aspect ratio of four. It is common practise to analyse results …

Senior Chinese English As A Second Language (Esl) Learners On Their Learning Expectations And Needs In A Communicative-Approach-Based Program In Windsor: A Case Study, Man Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study probes into the learning milieu of a cohort of Chinese senior immigrants in order to inquire into their learning needs and expectations in a communicative-approach-based program. The participants, who acknowledged the importance of learning English as a second language (ESL), nevertheless expressed pessimism about their English learning outcomes. The elderly ESL students expect the curricula to adopt Chinese and English as classroom languages and present more senior life-related topics. A moderate learning pace integrated with recurrent learning cycles is considered appropriate for Chinese elderly ESL learners.

In today's dynamic environment, particularly the manufacturing sector, the necessity of being agile, and flexible is far greater than before. Decision makers should be equipped with effective tools, methods, and information to respond to the market's rapid changes. Modelling a manufacturing system provides unique insight into its behavior and allows simulating all crucial elements that have a role in the system performance. Max-Plus Algebra is a mathematical tool that can model a Discrete Event Dynamic System in the form of linear equations. Whereas Max-Plus Algebra was introduced after the 1980s, the number of studies regarding this tool and its applications …

Group Separation And Classification Of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury In A University Student Population, Jann Macisaac Sep 2018

Group Separation And Classification Of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury In A University Student Population, Jann Macisaac

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has gained an increasing amount of attention in the research literature since being included as topic for future research in the DSM-5 (APA, 2013). Currently, two models of NSSI exist, and both place a primacy on the role of the behaviour in regulating negative affect (Chapman et al., 2006; Nock, 2009). Past research has shown that there is considerable heterogeneity in the contextual, functional, and psychiatric profiles of people engaging in this behaviour (Klonsky & Olino, 2008). This underlying heterogeneity likely indicates that distinct sub-populations of people engaging in NSSI exist based on these factors. In the …

Towards Putting The ‘P’ In Perovskite: Exploring The Reactivity Of Phosphonium Salts With Group 14 Halides, Emily Helen Omahen Sep 2018

Towards Putting The ‘P’ In Perovskite: Exploring The Reactivity Of Phosphonium Salts With Group 14 Halides, Emily Helen Omahen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inorganic/organic hybrid perovskites have emerged as synthetic materials that exhibit light-harvesting properties. Although perovskites with alkylammonium cations have been previously reported, a perovskite family with phosphonium cations has not been investigated. Firstly, a library of phosphonium salts was made with the intention of further reaction with the group 14 halides towards creating a perovskite crystal. The composition of these salts were elucidated via NMR spectroscopy, and the crystal structures of three of the phosphonium salts were determined. The phosphonium iodide salts were then reacted with the lead, tin, and germanium iodides and bromides to discover if variant perovskitic structures are …

Concussion History And Behavioural Problems In Child And Adolescent Athletes, Robin Jessica Richardson Sep 2018

Concussion History And Behavioural Problems In Child And Adolescent Athletes, Robin Jessica Richardson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sport-related concussion has become a “hot-button” topic in the media and in science. Increasingly, researchers are beginning to understand the association between concussion history and psychosocial adjustment in adults. But little research has been conducted examining this relation in children, and studies done have yielded discrepant results. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate this relation by using current internalizing and externalizing behaviour to predict past history of concussion among child athletes. Forty-eight (77.1% female) elite community athletes aged 11 to 14 years old (M age = 12.95) completed baseline assessments at the University of Windsor as part of a …

Who Pays For Road Violence? Rethinking Roads, Cycling, And Tort Law, Celso Minoru Sakuraba Sep 2018

Who Pays For Road Violence? Rethinking Roads, Cycling, And Tort Law, Celso Minoru Sakuraba

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Road violence is now commonplace in North American cities. However, it has not always been like this. During the advent of the automobile, every road death was a source of outrage. It was concerted action from the motor industry, organized into the self-named “motordom,” that managed to shift the blame of the deaths. With the new perception that cars had the right to the roads, victims of road violence would start sharing that blame with drivers in the popular opinion. This shift affected law, including tort law. Before the advent of the motor vehicle, cycling law was an area of …

Situating Feminist Standpoint Theory: Toward A Critical Ontology Of Knowledge, Matthew Steckle Sep 2018

Situating Feminist Standpoint Theory: Toward A Critical Ontology Of Knowledge, Matthew Steckle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sandra Harding opposes her version of feminist standpoint theory to traditional ‘representationalist’ or ‘copy theories’ of truth. Yet her critics maintain that Harding’s standpoint theory retains an implicit representational epistemological framework that leaves space for global skepticism and pernicious relativism. Sharyn Clough and Shannon Sullivan argue that it is inconsistent for Harding to claim that (1) feminist standpoints will produce ‘less false’ theories than traditional androcentric scientific communities, and (2) that all perspectives (including the most socially privileged ones) are ‘enabled and limited’ by the social position from which they arise. Holding these two claims in tension with each other …

Chemically Modified Cellulosic Materials As Multi-Functional Agents In Polymer Composites, Jinlong Zhang Sep 2018

Chemically Modified Cellulosic Materials As Multi-Functional Agents In Polymer Composites, Jinlong Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Comparative flame retardancy of micro wood fiber plastic composites (WPCs) with fire retardants (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane, metal hydroxides and nanoclay) was studied. The fire additives (1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane as well as magnesium hydroxide) obviously enhanced the fire retarding properties of WPCs. Especially, 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane significantly reduced the total heat release as well as heat release rate. In addition, a synergistic effect of 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) and nanoclay was achieved for the enhanced fire retarding performance of WPCs.

A copolymer of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) (PVCL-g-CNCs) for use as thermally-responsive polymers with low critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) was synthesized via atom transfer radical …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Generating a comprehensive description of cortical networks requires a large-scale, systematic approach. To that end, we have begun a pipeline project using multipatch electrophysiology, supplemented with two-photon optogenetics, to characterize connectivity and synaptic signaling between classes of neurons in adult mouse primary visual cortex (V1) and human cortex. We focus on producing results detailed enough for the generation of computational models and enabling comparison with future studies. Here, we report our examination of intralaminar connectivity within each of several classes of excitatory neurons. We find that connections are sparse but present among all excitatory cell classes and layers we sampled, …

Implementing A Bottom Of The Pyramid Eye Care Solution, Patrick Long, Eric Martin, Paden Troxell, Charles Kim

The International Undergraduate Journal For Service-Learning, Leadership, and Social Change

Eighty-nine percent of the world’s visually impaired live in low-income regions (IAPB/WHO), and uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of moderate and severe visual impairment. Poor eye care in developing nations hinders development and advancement by creating barriers to education and labor inefficiencies. In some developing countries, few individuals can afford, or even have access to, corrective eye care. We propose the global eye care problem can be addressed using bottom of the pyramid thinking.
