Watching Self From A Distance: The Whys Of Watching Sinetrons Among Malay-Javanese Women In Malaysia, Lily El Ferawati Rofil
Informasi
This article discusses the cognitive reasoning behind the love for watching sinetron expressed by Malay-Javanese women in Malaysia. The Malay-Javanese women in this context refer to female members of Javanese communities within Malay society. Malaysians of Javanese descent are constitutionally considered as ethnic component of Malay racial group due to similarities in cultural customs and religion of Islam. However, they retain some semblance of Javanese cultural heritage including speaking the language in their everyday life. In the context of Malay-Javanese women under this study, it is identified that sinetrons have become the main source of their cultural consumption from television. …

Representasi Perempuan Dalam Kolom Humor Si Palui Di Banjarmasin Post, Irene Santika Vidiadari
Informasi
The focus of this paper is the representation of women on Banjarmasin Post's humour
column, "Si Palui," whose stories are either about daily lives or domestic issues. On the
latter topic, the theme which regularly appears is marital problems such as poligamy,
divorce, and sexuality. On this column, women characters are merely supporting casts
and, hence, are subordinated. This research applies the critical language element of the
micro level of Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis in order to understand
the representation issues through language: semantics, syntax, and lexycon. Th result
shows that the representation of women on Si Palui is …

The Beauty Concept is changing from time to time, from the classic beauty that walks
in harmony with the nature to the subjectivity of postmodern beauty. Nevertheless,
the beauty standard is often constructed by the media by using certain type of models.
The problem is this one standard is applied into all over the world. Indonesia is no
exception. The Shinzui Body Cleanser's advertisement is one of the advertisement
that construct this standard into consumer's mind. This advertisement claims to be
made by Japanese nature's extracts and identified beauty as Japanese woman's white
skin. Thus, this research aims to know …

“Kekerasan Dapat Dimaknai Berbeda-Beda”: Ragam Pemaknaan Atas Kekerasan Terhadap Perempuan Dalam Praktik Gerakan Sosial Aliansi Laki-Laki Baru, Febi Rizki Ramadhan
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
This article examines the variety of meaning towards violence against women in Aliansi Laki-laki Baru’s social movement practice as a social movement that focuses on issues regarding male engagement in ending violence against women and achieving gender equality. Using ethnographic methods, I argue that social movement, particularly Aliansi Laki-laki Baru, could not be understood as monolithic and homogeneous entity because its participants could have various meanings on violence against women. While violence against women could be contextualized as Aliansi Laki-laki Baru’s main focus, participants in ALB could construct their own meaning on ‘violence against women’ as a sociocultural phenomenon. Furthermore, …

Research on gender representation in folk tales has shown that oftentimes values embedded in folk tales are not in line with contemporary gender values. This paper aims at revealing the objectification of women in three Indonesian folktales turned into children’s literature, which are Si Leungli, Jaka Tarub, and Sangkuriang rewritten by a group of writers and illustrators under the name Sanggar Tumpal. The research uses Nussbaum and Langton’s concept on objectification to analyze the text and the illustrations. The result of the research shows that both the text and the pictures of the three books display consistent portrayal of women …

Academic dishonesty among students has been recognised as a major concern in higher education in Indonesia. Accounting research arguably need to give more attention to this issue. This is partly because of the importance of integrity as part of accounting ethics and professionalism. However, little currently known about academic dishonesty among accounting students in Indonesia. We address this issue by surveying 342 accounting students about their perception of academic dishonesty and what motivates such behaviour. Our respondents were from all first, second or third year undergraduate students at one state university in Indonesia. Drawing from Theory of Planned Behaviour, we …

Examining Attentional Control And Processing Speed Deficits As Underlying Mechanisms Of Neuropsychological Impairment In Schizophrenia, Mayte Forte
Graduate Masters Theses
Neuropsychological impairment is a key characteristic of schizophrenia (SZ), but its cognitive profile and underlying information processing mechanisms are not yet well understood. We compare patterns of neuropsychological functioning in 85 persons with SZ and 76 healthy controls across measures of intelligence, memory, and executive function. We then test the hypothesis that neuropsychological impairment in SZ is related to dual deficits in two related but distinct information processes: processing speed and attentional control. All research participants completed Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III), Wechsler Memory Scale Third Edition (WMS-III), and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), all of which provided measures …

Observing The Experience Of Racism Through Social Background, Leïla J. Dieye
Graduate Masters Theses
This study explores racism through the eyes of the one that experiences it. If different types of racism have already been established, the initial premise of the study is that some factors make its experience unique, such as one individual’s markers of identity and his history.
Data have been collected from in-depth interviews with ten participants belonging to five ethnic groups (Latino, African American, Asian, African and Middle Eastern). Those participants were asked to reflect on a specific moment when they witnessed racism, and on why it made them think that event in particular was racist. Then, they were asked …

Whether Or Not 'It Gets Better'…Coping With Parental Heterosexist Rejection, Cara Herbitter
Graduate Masters Theses
Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people face the burden of additional stressors as a result of their experiences of stigma and discrimination regarding their sexual minority status. Parental rejection of LGB people in the context of heterosexism serves as a powerful minority stressor associated with poorer mental health (e.g., Bouris et al., 2010; Ryan, Huebner, Diaz, & Sanchez, 2009). Few contemporary theories exist to describe the experience of parental rejection. In addition, the extant empirical research has focused primarily on youth experiences among White and urban LGB samples, signaling the need for research across the lifespan investigating more diverse samples. …

Intergenerational Financial Exchange And Cognitive Well-Being Among Older Adults In China, Ping Xu
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Although cognitive loss is part of normal aging, it has unfavorable consequences for older individuals, their family, as well as society. The prevalence of mild cognition impairment is expected to go up in China. How to maintain normal cognition for a longer period of time and to delay impair process is an emerging concern for older Chinese adults. Unlike Western countries, China lacks of formal support system. Intergenerational support between older parents and adult children is a predominant resource when they are in need. This study examines how intergenerational financial exchanges between older parents and their adult children is related …

More Than Human Sacrifice: Teaching About The Aztecs In The New Latino South, Timothy Monreal
Middle Grades Review
This essay details an extended lesson I created to teach about Aztec/Mexica resistance to Spanish conquest in a sixth grade classroom within the context of the New Latino South. Rather than concentrate on the familiar tropes of human sacrifice and European exploration, I centered Aztec/Mexica philosophy, arts, and resistance in order to disrupt majoritarian narratives reified in Social Studies courses. Decentering and complicating the dominant narrative about Aztec/Mexica culture is one way educators can challenge dominant, and negative, discourse about burgeoning Latinx communities. I argue that in order for schools to help remedy deficit perspectives of Latinx people, especially in …

Collaborative Librarianship
Research on students’ educational experiences demonstrates the importance of a holistic understanding of the complexity of students’ lives to developing library programs, services, and resources that effectively address undergraduate needs. The “A Day in the Life” (ADITL) project investigated a typical day for over 200 students at eight diverse institutions in the US. Examining the local and individual expressions of student taskscapes – the ensemble of interrelated social activities across time and space – placed each student’s relationship to their library in a larger description of their academic and personal lives. By exploring the whole student experience, this multi-site ethnographic …
