Speciation In The Highlands Of Mexico: Genetic And Phenotypic Divergence In The Mexican Jay (Aphelocoma Ultramarina), John Mccormack, A. Peterson, E. Bonaccorso, Thomas Smith
John E. McCormack
The pine-oak woodlands of the Mexican highlands harbour significant biological diversity, yet little is known about the evolutionary history of organisms inhabiting this region. We assessed genetic and phenotypic differentiation in 482 individuals representing 27 populations of the Mexican jay (Aphelocoma ultramarina) — a widespread bird species of the Mexican highlands — to test whether populations in the central and northern Mexican sierras display discrete breaks between groups, which would be consistent with a role for the different mountain chains in divergence and speciation. We found abrupt breaks in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA; ND2 and control region) delineating four major genetic …

Fast-Responding Nonlinear Phase Shifter Using A Signal-Wave Gain Medium, K. J. Jiang, L. Deng, E. W. Hagley, Marvin G. Payne
Marvin G. Payne
Using a full density matrix formalism we show that for a lifetime broadened four-level scheme with a signal wave gain medium a large nonlinear phase shift can be induced without signal wave slowdown and attenuation. In this system the signal wave acquires a large nonlinear phase shift and travels with superluminal propagation characteristics. This raises the possibility of rapidly responding nonlinear phase shifting and possibly phase gating devices for information science.

Introduction: Mortality rates for coronary heart disease (CHD) have declined markedly since the early 1970s. However, CHD remains the number one cause of death in the United States. The decline in mortality has been attributed to declines in CHD risk factors (tobacco use, hypertension) and the increase in protective behaviors (exercise, weight control). Medical interventions may have also contributed to the decline in mortality. Despite these declines in mortality, racial disparities persist between Blacks and Whites. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in receipt of cardiac catheterization, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, and coronary artery bypass …

A Promising Change In The Selection Of The Circular Polarization Excitation Used In The Measurement Of Eu(Iii) Circularly Polarized Luminescence, K. Do, F. C. Muller, Gilles Muller
A Promising Change In The Selection Of The Circular Polarization Excitation Used In The Measurement Of Eu(Iii) Circularly Polarized Luminescence, K. Do, F. C. Muller, Gilles Muller
Faculty Publications, Chemistry
A judicious change in the selected transition used for circular polarization excitation will overcome the low oscillator strength limitation of the currently allowed magnetic-dipole 5D1 ← 7F2 (Eu(III)) transition chosen for circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurement. The proposed allowed magnetic-dipole 5D1 ← 7F0 (Eu(III)) transition will facilitate the detection of CPL from the Eu(III) systems of interest. CPL on the acetonitrile solution of the chiral tris complex of Eu(III) with (R,R)-N,N′-bis(1-phenylethyl)-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ([Eu((R,R)-1)3]3+), recently suggested as an effective and reliable CPL calibrating agent, confirms the feasibility of the proposed experimental procedure. A comparable CPL activity exhibited by the acetonitrile solution of …

Assessing Osteoporosis Learning Needs And Preferences Of Exercise Physiologists, P D. Sollis, C J. Cisar
Assessing Osteoporosis Learning Needs And Preferences Of Exercise Physiologists, P D. Sollis, C J. Cisar
Faculty Publications
Research has revealed substantial knowledge deficits regarding osteoporosis among various healthcare professionals, such as physicians, nurses, and physical therapists. However, no previous studies have addressed the levels of knowledge regarding osteoporosis among exercise physiologists working in a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation setting. It is essential that exercise physiologists have a thorough understanding of osteoporosis so they can ensure client safety and provide accurate information to the client and support group. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the levels of knowledge about osteoporosis among exercise physiologists working with clients who are at high risk for fragility fractures. Ninety-six exercise physiologists (female …

Stochastic Hard-Sphere Dynamics For Hydrodynamics Of Non-Ideal Fluids, Alejandro Garcia, A. Donev, B. J. Alder
Stochastic Hard-Sphere Dynamics For Hydrodynamics Of Non-Ideal Fluids, Alejandro Garcia, A. Donev, B. J. Alder
Faculty Publications
A novel stochastic fluid model is proposed with a nonideal structure factor consistent with compressibility, and adjustable transport coefficients. This stochastic hard sphere dynamics (SHSD) algorithm is a modification of the direct simulation Monte Carlo algorithm and has several computational advantages over event-driven hard-sphere molecular dynamics. Surprisingly, SHSD results in an equation of state and a pair correlation function identical to that of a deterministic Hamiltonian system of penetrable spheres interacting with linear core pair potentials. The fluctuating hydrodynamic behavior of the SHSD fluid is verified for the Brownian motion of a nanoparticle suspended in a compressible solvent.
Negotiating And Navigating The Rough Terrain Of Transnational Feminist Research, Tanya Saroj Bakhru
Negotiating And Navigating The Rough Terrain Of Transnational Feminist Research, Tanya Saroj Bakhru
Faculty Publications, Social Sciences
This article examines aspects of feminist methodology pertinent to carrying out transnational research within an era of globalization. I explore the use of self-reflexivity, engagement with conceptualizations of insider/outsider, and the employment of feminist critiques of notions of objectivity within the research process as feminist methodological tools relevant to transnational feminist research. I argue that in an age of globalization, such methodological frameworks and tools are necessary in research committed to feminist contestations of globalization in that the nature of transnational research sustains an ever dynamic and shifting landscape of personal, political, and geographical relationships. This article draws upon my …

Not Just A Golden State: Three Anglo ‘Rushes’ In The Making Of Southern California, 1880-1920., Glen Gendzel
Faculty Publications, History
Three southern California rushes-the health rush, the land rush, and the orange rush-deserve the kind ofattention historians have lavished on northern California's gold rush. The three booms in the southern portion of the state were not only bigger than the gold rush, they concentrated the state's population in the south. They also played roles in the racially-based social and cultural patterns that developed in the region.

Assessing The Professional Development Needs Of Public Health Educators In Light Of Changing Competencies, A. R. Demers, Edward M. Mamary
Faculty Publications
Introduction Because of the need for a well-trained public health workforce, professional competencies have been recently revised by the Institute of Medicine and the National Health Educator Competencies Update Project. This study compared the self-identified training needs of public health educators with the updated competencies and assessed employer support for continuing education. Methods A convenience sample of public health educators was recruited from an e-mail list of San Jose State University master of public health alumni. Respondents completed a Web-based survey that elicited information on emerging trends in public health education, training needs, and employer support for continuing education. Results …
A Re-Assessment Of Liberal Pacifism At The Monadic Level Of Analysis, Charles R. Boehmer
A Re-Assessment Of Liberal Pacifism At The Monadic Level Of Analysis, Charles R. Boehmer
Charles Boehmer
Are democracies are generally peaceful? The literature was in the past contradictory, although now there appears increasing evidence that democracies are more pacifistic than other regimes. This research note explores why the literature has often been mischaracterized or misunderstood in our field. This is followed with an analysis of democracy and conflict at the state level of analysis from 1884-1999 using a broad sample of states and appropriate statistical estimators. The results comport with past studies that democracies are less likely to initiate militarized conflicts. The study also shows that even when democracies do militarize a dispute, these are less …
Intergovernmental Organization Memberships: Examining Political Community And The Attributes Of International Organizations, Charles R. Boehmer, Timothy Nordstrom
Intergovernmental Organization Memberships: Examining Political Community And The Attributes Of International Organizations, Charles R. Boehmer, Timothy Nordstrom
Charles Boehmer
Why are states jointly members in certain intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) but not others? Despite the proliferation of IGOs and renewed interest in this topic, we lack systematic research to answer this question. Our theory of political community explains why dyads of states are likely to be common members in particular types of IGOs. We analyze and compare functionalist and Deutschian communitarian perspectives about IGO memberships. We test our theory using newly available data on IGO mandates and institutional structure, which allows us to make specific predictions about the types of IGO to which dyads become members. We show that dyads …
