Growing international interest in ECEC policy in the 1990s resulted in increasing awareness of its significance for education policy in Ireland. Arising from this, in 1999, Ready to Learn: A White Paper for Early Childhood Education was published. This led to the establishment of the Centre for Early Childhood Development and Education (CECDE). This chapter charts in chronological order the history and work of the CECDE from its inception in 2001 until its closure in 2008. It documents the governance, structures, strategic direction and management of the Centre. It foregrounds the outputs of the Centre including research reports, international conferences …

A Preliminary Investigation Into The Presence Of Woozles In Applied Behavior-Analytic Publications, Vanessa R. Hiley
Culminating Projects in Community Psychology, Counseling and Family Therapy
Inaccurate reporting of previous publications may seem innocuous in a publication that exhibits sound theories and results; however, consistent, inaccurate reporting of an original body of work runs the risk of establishing false conclusions. In publications, a woozle is a misguided or misrepresented belief or claim, which, if accumulated, can lead to an inaccurate theory or conclusion. Previous literature in other fields have noted the existence of woozles and their effect. This study was a preliminary investigation into the presence of woozles in current applied behavior analytic publications. The first phase of the study identified 20 experimental research articles from …

Weather Permitting, Acadia Kandora
Weather Permitting, Acadia Kandora
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Weather Permitting is an exhibition of objects and printed matter, primarily in the form of publicationsthat examine my relationship to nature and the idea of nature as both sanctuary and armor. At a young age, my parents would take my on a hike every Sunday instead of going to church. The hikes acted as a weekly pilgrimage deep into the woods and a ritual instilling the idea of nature being a place of spiritual refuge and retreat. A sanctuary - of course, weather permitting.
As I grew up and experienced hardship, my first instinct has always been to go hide …

During And Beyond A Pandemic: Publishing Learning And Teaching Research Through Covid-19, Joseph Crawford
Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice
The novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has been a prevailing topic in contemporary higher education literature over the past year. The initial and emerging responses will be ongoing sources of critical reflection and future research. This commentary seeks to reflect on three types of manuscripts we are reviewing frequently within the Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice, and those published elsewhere. Despite our best efforts, many publications overemphasize the present context without contextualising previous insights, or retain previous knowledge without application to contemporary practice. This commentary provides a brief review of manuscripts with pre-COVID-19 data, COVID-19-specific data, and future focused …

Migrants Can Make International Law, Ama Francis
Migrants Can Make International Law, Ama Francis
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
Migrants have the power to make international law as norm creators. The nation-state enjoys a monopoly on violence in domestic jurisgenesis, but international law’s constraint on the use of force provides non-state actors the opportunity to participate in the formation of international legal doctrine without the threat of violence. Scholars have overlooked this nonstate jurisgenerative potential, bound by a state-centric conception of law. This Article applies the claim that non-state actors have the power to influence international law to the transnational issue of climate-induced migration. Climate change intensifies slow- and sudden-onset events, and sudden-onset disasters already displace millions annually. Yet …
The Law Of Enhanced Weathering For Carbon Dioxide Removal: Volume 2 – Legal Issues Associated With Materials Sourcing, Romany M. Webb
The Law Of Enhanced Weathering For Carbon Dioxide Removal: Volume 2 – Legal Issues Associated With Materials Sourcing, Romany M. Webb
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
Achieving the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting the increase in global average temperatures well below 2°C, and ideally to 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels will likely require the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This could be achieved in various ways, including by enhancing natural weathering processes in which carbon dioxide reacts with silicate-based rocks, eventually forming carbonate minerals (e.g., limestone). Research suggests that the amount of carbon dioxide sequestered through this natural process can be increased by grinding silicate-rich minerals (e.g., olivine) or rocks (e.g., dunite) to increase their surface area and then spreading the powder over land or …

Removing Carbon Dioxide Through Seaweed Cultivation: Legal Challenges And Opportunities, Korey Silverman-Roati, Michael B. Gerrard, Romany M. Webb
Faculty Scholarship
Scientists increasingly agree that carbon dioxide removal will be needed, alongside deep emissions cuts, to stave off the worst impacts of climate change. A wide variety of technologies and strategies have been proposed to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. To date, most research has focused on terrestrial-based approaches, but they often have large land requirements, and may present other risks and challenges. As such, there is growing interest in using the oceans, which have already absorbed more than a quarter of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions, and could become an even larger carbon sink in the future.
This paper explores …
Removing Carbon Dioxide Through Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement And Seaweed Cultivation: Legal Challenges And Opportunities, Romany M. Webb, Korey Silverman-Roati, Michael B. Gerrard
Removing Carbon Dioxide Through Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement And Seaweed Cultivation: Legal Challenges And Opportunities, Romany M. Webb, Korey Silverman-Roati, Michael B. Gerrard
Faculty Scholarship
This paper explores two ocean-based carbon dioxide removal strategies – ocean alkalinity enhancement and seaweed cultivation. Ocean alkalinity enhancement involves adding alkalinity to ocean waters, either by discharging alkaline rocks or through an electrochemical process, which increases ocean pH levels and thereby enables greater uptake of carbon dioxide, as well as reducing the adverse impacts of ocean acidification. Seaweed cultivation involves the growing of kelp and other macroalgae to store carbon in biomass, which can then either be used to replace more greenhouse gas-intensive products or sequestered.
This paper also examines the international and U.S. legal frameworks that apply to …
The Legal Framework For Offshore Carbon Capture And Storage In Canada, Romany M. Webb, Michael B. Gerrard
The Legal Framework For Offshore Carbon Capture And Storage In Canada, Romany M. Webb, Michael B. Gerrard
Faculty Scholarship
Averting catastrophic climate change requires immediate action to prevent additional carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. However, even that may not be sufficient, with many scientists now warning that it will likely also be necessary to reduce the existing atmospheric carbon dioxide load. That could be achieved using negative emissions technologies that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store or utilize it in some way. One promising technology is direct air capture (“DAC”) which uses liquid chemical solutions or solid sorbent filters to capture carbon dioxide from the air and concentrate it into a …

Sharing Knowledge Through Publishing Research Work In Indexed Journals: A Vision Of Malaysian Private Universities, Mosharrof Hosen, Yee-Lee Chong, Lin-Sea Lau
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Policymakers are overwhelmingly worried about reinforcing new trends for academics’ knowledge sharing through publishing research work in indexed journals. By being the first, this study investigates the issue from the behavioral perspective along with perceived trust construct while inundating previous studies discovered from different factors, including technological, environmental, and cultural. A total of 315 valid responses were received from Malaysian private universities’ academics through a self-administrated questionnaire survey. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was implemented to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that perceived trust has a significant positive impact on attitude, but a negative effect on intention. Furthermore, attitude and …

Addressing Academic Rejection: Recommendations For Reform, Kelly-Ann Allen, Gregory M. Donoghue, Saeed Pahlevansharif, Shane R. Jimerson Professor, John A.C. Hattie Professor
Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice
The aim of this paper is to provide a number of reasoned and evidence-supported arguments and a list of recommendations for reducing the impact of academic rejection. A brief literature review examined the prevalence and negative impacts of academic rejection including its purported purposes, predictors, and consequences. Findings revealed that the topic of academic rejection is largely under-studied, with very few empirical investigations. The extant literature typically places the onus on the individual academic to deal with rejection. Few articles have recommended institutional changes to ameliorate the known mental health impacts of rejection. We propose that the discovery and dissemination …
