The NCAA expends substantial resources to insure that the distinction between amateur and professional sports is maintained in collegiate athletics. Preserving the boundary lines between amateur and professional sports is more than an attempt to ensure philosophical purity or a nostalgic quest for historic preservation. The boundaries between amateur and professional sports are maintained by legal doctrines in several areas.

Application of tort law to coaches' liability for conduct leading to injuries to athletes reflects and preserves the boundary lines between professional and amateur sports. Although the implied assumption of risk doctrine should preserve that distinction, some courts have applied …

The Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) age/education policy, which generally requires women's professional basketball players to wait four years after graduating high school before entering the league, invokes substantial debate about both its legality and ethicality. This article discusses the WNBA age/education policy from a legal, cultural, and ethical perspective. Part One of this article discusses the women's basketball landscape in terms of sociology, race, and gender. This study examined student perceptions regarding professional engineering practice. We surveyed secondary school students attending engineering camps, engineering students in their first and fourth years, graduate engineers and experienced engineers to ascertain their impressions about what constitutes the daily activities of a professional engineer. We asked respondents to rate 39 aspects of engineering practice identified from the research later reported in (Trevelyan 2008). These aspects were rated by the participants according to their perception of the importance and the frequency encountered in engineering practice. This paper reports on a how pre-service teacher use of an online classroom simulation (ClassSim) supplemented existing practicum experiences and contributed to the development of their emerging professional identity. ClassSim was developed to provide pre-service teachers with a safe virtual environment in which they can explore ‘authentic’ and practical classroom scenarios. Users were able to assume the role of a teacher during in the virtual classroom, and during its running time make a number of decisions about the management of the classroom and the organisation of virtual teaching and learning experiences. Introduction: Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) is “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of patients” (Sackett et al, 1996). This concept of EBM extends the health information professional beyond “identification of literature to involvement in practicing and teaching quality filtering and critical appraisal of the literature” (Scherrer, 1999:324).

This definitely challenges the traditional role of the health information professional thus advocating for the need to acquire necessary skills, so as to be in a position to support EBM.
