Stuart Chases's Use Of Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island, (1874), Richard Vangermeersch
Special Collections (Miscellaneous)
There are two very specific reasons why this piece was researched and written. The first is a continuation of my work done on Stuart Chase (various publications). I am still hopeful my efforts will inspire an historian to do a 1000 page biography on Stuart Chase. The second is further example why my idea of using Verne’s book as the basis for a one-day management seminar is worth trying.

Prediction Of Job Completion Times And Optimal Overtime Allocation For Satisfying Production Due Dates, Olivia Liu
Prediction Of Job Completion Times And Optimal Overtime Allocation For Satisfying Production Due Dates, Olivia Liu
Theses
One of the important aspects contributing to the competitiveness and success of a manufacturer is the efficient management for timely order delivery. After production orders are scheduled, there arises the need of a support tool to aid in the analysis with the available information, and to support managerial decision making which ultimately aims at on-time delivery. One way in which companies can meet due-dates of orders that are in jeopardy of being late, is to schedule overtime. This research presents a method used for 1) predict the completion times of scheduled jobs; and 2) optimizing overtime allocation when delays are …

Assessing Ecological Correlates Of Avian Disease Prevalence In The Galapagos Islands Using Gis And Remote Sensing, Shane Robert Siers
Theses
In recognition of the potential consequences of pathogen introduction to the Galapagos Islands, the Saint Louis Zoo and the University of Missouri¿Saint Louis, in cooperation with the Galapagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station, implemented an avian disease surveillance program in 2001, with the objective of identifying and monitoring for pathogens that pose risk for native bird populations. The purpose of this thesis is identify environmental factors that might influence the geographic distribution of avian pathogen infection, based on two data sets obtained as a result of these surveillance efforts: 1) seroprevalence data on 10 common poultry …

Best Management Practices For Aquatic Vegetation Management In Lakes, Joseph E. Morris, Richard D. Clayton
Best Management Practices For Aquatic Vegetation Management In Lakes, Joseph E. Morris, Richard D. Clayton
11th Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference (2006)
Aquatic plants are an important component of well functioning lake ecosystems. Plant abundance is influenced by sediments, nutrients and water clarity. Given the dominance of agriculture in Iowa, nutrients and soil lost from “leaky” watersheds combine to create ideal habitat for growth of aquatic plants in lakes and ponds and hasten eutrophication. Under these conditions, plant growth can become a nuisance and reduce recreation, especially shoreline angling and boating. These nuisance growths present special problems to lake managers and those interested in lake-based recreation. Given the complexity of the aquatic vegetation often found in lakes, there is no one long-term …

Breaking Through The Food Plot Mentality, Christopher E. Moorman, Craig A. Harper, Christopher Deperno
11th Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference (2006)
Landowners and other wildlife enthusiasts often desire instant gratification when attempting to attract wildlife to their properties. Advertisements distributed by television programs, outdoor publications, and conservation organizations have played a large part in creating the desire for a quick and easy fix. Landowners are erroneously led to believe food plots or plantings of nonnative shrubs and trees will raise the carrying capacity for target wildlife species, even though the typical privately-held property contains overstocked, high-graded timber, intensively maintained croplands, mowed roadsides and drainage ditches, fire-suppressed woodlands, and pastures vegetated with non-native grasses that provide no cover and poor-quality forage. In …

Measures Of Perceived Credibility Of Blogs: Construct Validation By Lisrel, Uday S. Tate, Elizabeth Alexander, Suneel K. Maheshwari
Management Faculty Research
Predictions are that blogs will be the promotional tool of the future, if not now. The question remains: how credible are blogs as a source of consumer information? How do consumers perceive the credibility of blogs from different sources when making purchase decisions and product evaluations? The primary objective of the present study is to assess validity and reliability of a set of Semantic Differential scales purported to measure perceived credibility of different types of blogs. Confirmatory factor analysis via LISREL8.5 package was used to obtain appropriate statistics for convergent validity, discriminant validity, and composite reliability. In general, the scales …

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Leadership has mistakenly been assumed to be a quality processed by all individuals who have positions of authority. Implied is the ability to “draw others into the active pursuit of the strategic goals” (Cunningham and Cordeiro, 2006, p. 155) of the organization. This ability energizes faculty to take the organization to greater heights of achievement. But, as Elash (2004) clearly pointed out, “the corporate scandals at the turn of the millennium clearly demonstrate that leaders can be self-serving and greedy …. Even if they are well intentioned, leaders can abuse their power. … Some are just bullies who mistreat others …

Outsourcing In Ireland: A Literature Review, Survey And Case Study Perspective, Edward Sweeney, Aoife O'Riordan
Outsourcing In Ireland: A Literature Review, Survey And Case Study Perspective, Edward Sweeney, Aoife O'Riordan
Conference papers
This paper investigates what is happening in Ireland at the moment regards outsourcing. It
looks into the literature review and the survey conducted. The research took place over a period
of two years, initially as a literature review, and then the survey was conducted through the
mediums of e-mail and the postal service. The survey analysis found that Ireland was the most
likely place for Irish companies to outsource to, and that nearly 40 percent of the companies that
have been surveyed have started on their latest outsourcing initiative since 2004. This indicates
that outsourcing is still important on the …
Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick
Indoctrination, Diversity, And Teaching About Spirituality And Religion In The Workplace, Donald W. Mccormmick
Organization Management Journal
The author reflects on his experience and discusses problems in teaching a course about spirituality and religion in the workplace. Sometimes indoctrination happens when professors treat their own spiritual ideology as the truth, or they require students to engage in religious practices in class. Indoctrination is teaching people “to accept a system of thought uncritically.” The management education literature has little to say about indoctrination. Indoctrination can be avoided by (1) ensuring informed consent, (2) designing learning activities for students from all spiritual perspectives, (3) teaching about the topic (instead of taking the “how to” approach), (4) presenting diverse spiritual …
