The Importance Of Vertical And Shared Leadership Within New Venture Top Management Teams: Implications For The Performance Of Startups, Michael D. Ensley, Keith M. Hmieleski, Craig L. Pearce
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The current study investigated the relative influence of vertical versus shared leadership within new venture top management teams on the performance of startups using two different samples. Vertical leadership stems from an appointed or formal leader of a team (e.g., the CEO), whereas shared leadership is a form of distributed leadership stemming from within a team. Transformational, transactional, empowering, and directive dimensions of both vertical and shared leadership were examined. New venture performance was considered in terms of revenue growth and employee growth. The first sample was comprised of 66 top management teams of firms drawn from Inc. Magazine’s …

Change Management, Patrick M. Dawson
Change Management, Patrick M. Dawson
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
A key aim of change management is to manage processes towards a future that, even when anticipated and planned for, can never be fully foreseen. It is a paradox that continues to generate considerable debate and conceptual and definitional confusion.

Overcoming Organisational Resistance To Using Wiki Technology For Knowledge Management, Charmaine C. Pfaff, Helen M. Hasan
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
Although Wikis emerged in the public domain more than a decade ago, a number of business organisations are now discovering the advantages of using Wiki technology to manage knowledge. However, there are many who are not convinced about the merits of this relatively new Wiki technology and are not yet prepared to risk its adoption because it exhibits many ideas that have yet to be tested and many issues that have yet to be resolved. This paper studies the merits of using a Wiki for knowledge management. While some cases of corporate adoption of Wiki technology have been reported, cases …

Management flight simulators provide a “microworld” in which users control an organization in a realistic environment without the need to disturb the real system. This paper presents a web-based intelligent virtual learning environment to enhance the education of engineering management students in quality management and statistical process control techniques. The paper introduces the structure and methodology for building this online learning environment. The simulated environment is based on an innovative approach which incorporates a Fuzzy Adaptive Resonance Theory Neural Network to enable students to obtain the best response by automatically identifying out of control conditions.
Towards An Organizational Model Of Occupational Health And Safety Management: A Review Of The Literature, Michael Zanko, Scott Burrows
Towards An Organizational Model Of Occupational Health And Safety Management: A Review Of The Literature, Michael Zanko, Scott Burrows
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
The enormous, tragic and largely unnoticed problem of workplace injuries and deaths continues to beset countries around the globe. Tripartite regulatory approaches to address the issues involved often place primary responsibility on employers’ management of health and safety (OHS) at the workplace. This paper seeks to ascertain how OHS management at the organizational level has been treated in the research literature.
A review of thirteen leading management journals from 1994 to 2005 was conspicuous by the absence of interest in OHS management as the subject or field of study. An examination of six leading HRM journals over the same timeframe …
Managing Human Capital In A Privately Owned Public Hotel Chain, Indra Abeysekera
Managing Human Capital In A Privately Owned Public Hotel Chain, Indra Abeysekera
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
This study analyses human capital (HC) management practices in a small privately owned public hotel group, in the context of intellectual capital (IC). Previous studies have highlighted how firms measure and report HC, however few studies have examined the HC management practices of firms. This study analyses these practices using multiple data methods – namely, observation, interaction with staff, examination of internal financial and management reports, and semi-structured case study interviews - on a continuous basis over a one-year period. The results of this study indicate that, through HC management practices, this group of hotels engaged in value extraction rather …
Using System Dynamics Approach To Construct A Performance Measurement Model For Pharmacy Supply Chain Management, Jiinpo Wu, Charlie C. Chen, Ray Tsai
Using System Dynamics Approach To Construct A Performance Measurement Model For Pharmacy Supply Chain Management, Jiinpo Wu, Charlie C. Chen, Ray Tsai
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
A credible performance measurement system is imperative to evaluate SCM systems effectiveness. However, commonly accepted measurements for evaluating pharmacy supply chain management (SCM) are yet to be developed. This study models the dynamic behavior of pharmacy supply chains to include managerial policies and performance measuring systems based on a well-established theoretical framework. The system dynamics methodology is adopted to simulate three scenarios: (1) demand forecasting policy, (2) market need, and (3) manufacturing errors. Simulation results lead to important policy implications of pharmacy SCM.
Do Information Privacy Concerns Affect Students’ Feeling Of Alienation?, Joseph S. Mollick, John Michael Pearson
Do Information Privacy Concerns Affect Students’ Feeling Of Alienation?, Joseph S. Mollick, John Michael Pearson
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Organizations such as universities collect and use personal data about customers such as students. How do students feel about their university’s practices related to the collection and use of personal data? Using data collected via a survey of 187 students at a large U.S. university, we investigate the effects of these two privacy concerns on students’ feeling of alienation. Implications of the results are discussed in light of ethics, strategy, design, control and administration of personal information management systems.

A Collaborative Project Management Approach And A Framework For Its Supporting Systems, Fang Chen, Nicholas C. Romano Jr, Jay F. Nunamaker Jr
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
The project management (PM) paradigm has changed during the past decade due to the globalization of business and advancement of information technology (IT). Increasingly, projects involve members from different geographical locations more than at any other time in history. Traditional PM methods may be inadequate to manage distributed projects, and new information systems are needed to support distributed PM. This article provides the rationale for a collaborative PM approach to manage distributed projects and proposes a conceptual framework for the collaborative PM software development. The objective is to present a collaborative PM framework that can guide further research and development …

Journal of International Technology and Information Management
A key challenge to top management is the alignment of IS and business plans for the purpose of producing an IT-based competitive advantage. This study uses a well known communication theory to provide new insight into the impact of CEO and CIO planning participation on IS and business alignment via the convergence of views between the CEO and CIO regarding the current and future strategic impact of IT on the firm’s success. One hundred and nine matched pairs of questionnaire responses from CIOs and CEOs were collected using a postal survey. Results indicated that CIO participation in business planning predicted …

Simulation Model And Analysis Of A Data Warehouse, Vikas Agrawal, Udayan Nandkeolyar, P.S. Sundararaghavan, Mesbah U. Ahmed
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Data warehouses are large complex systems with many interacting nonlinear components. It is an amalgamation of many different systems and integration of such diverse elements is its primary concern. It is often difficult for a data warehouse manager to predict the performance of the system especially when demand pattern for the required data keeps changing. We have developed a simulation model using ARENA simulation package that will simulate the behavior and performance of a data warehouse system environment based on its overall design. Given such a model, a data warehouse manager can walk through various what-if scenarios and can pinpoint …

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers
Planning and management of water resources are faced with increasingly high levels of complexity, uncertainty and conflict. Traditional technical and top-down management strategies have proved inadequate, forcing a move to more "integrated" forms of management, planning and decision making that can include stakeholders and communities, as well as technical experts and policy makers. These integrated forms of management require not only good technical or scientific ability, but a range of "art-like" skills including communication, creativity and the capacity to acknowledge and integrate diverse points of view. However, processes designed to aid such inter-organisational or multi-stakeholder decisionmaking are rare and in …
Differences In Motivation For Participation And Attitudes Toward Management Among Rock Climbing Sub Groups: Implications For The Benefits-Based Management Approach, Amy L. Ackerman
Human Movement Sciences & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to develop a scale that would measure the motivation for participation of rock climbing subgroups, determine what differences exist among rock climbing subgroups and confirm the Rock Climbers' Attitudes toward Management Scale. Respondents were given an on-site questionnaire at three rock climbing areas in the United States. Respondents identified themselves according to their preferred type of climbing (e.g., traditional climbing, sport climbing, and hybrid climbing) and their preferred mode of climbing (e.g., lead climbing, top roping, and both equally). Exploratory factor analysis identified five factors for the Rock Climbing Motivation Scale: competition, control, escape, …

Transforming Learning/Transforming Schools: Do Models Of Deployment Of Digital Technologies Support Transformative Teaching And Learning And School Leadership?, Kathryn Moyle
Professor Kathryn Moyle
Government primary and secondary schools across Australia are introducing digital technologies to support teaching and learning. Systemic models of deploying the information technology (IT) infrastructure to support this use of digital technologies however, can be at odds both with organisational models of school leadership and management, and with approaches used to support teaching and learning. Efficient IT deployment strategies drawn from the private sector are being applied within the school sector. These IT deployment approaches tend to be based upon centralised and standardised management models where the amount and nature of the software is limited and controlled. At the same …
