Ratio Of Isolated Photon Cross Sections In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 630 And 1800 Gev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Dec 2001

Ratio Of Isolated Photon Cross Sections In Pp̅ Collisions At √S = 630 And 1800 Gev, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Gregory Snow Publications

The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in pp̅ collisions at √s = 630 GeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (ET) range from 7–49 GeV and have pseudorapidity∣η∣ < 2.5. This measurement is combined with the previous D0 result at √s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading-order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and the ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the ET range.

Middle School Educators Honored, Kay Hyatt

General University of Maine Publications

The Maine Association for Middle Level Education (MAMLE) honored exemplary educators at its 2001 annual fall conference. Nearly 400 middle level educators from across Maine as well as visitors from New Hampshire, Virginia and Ohio attended the event held at Sugarloaf USA.

MAMLE is the professional association of teachers, administrators and parents who have joined together to support the development of quality programs to serve the needs of young adolescents. It exists to promote a better understanding of middle grades education and serves as a source of ideas, information and support.

Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diodes At 340 Nm Using Quaternary Alingan Multiple Quantum Wells, V. Adivarahan, A. Chitnis, J. P. Zhang, M. Shatalov, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur Dec 2001

Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diodes At 340 Nm Using Quaternary Alingan Multiple Quantum Wells, V. Adivarahan, A. Chitnis, J. P. Zhang, M. Shatalov, J. W. Yang, Grigory Simin, M. Asif Khan, R. Gaska, M. S. Shur

Faculty Publications

An ultraviolet light-emitting diode with peak emission wavelength at 340 nm is reported. The active layers of the device were comprised of quaternary AlInGaN/AlInGaN multiple quantum wells, which were deposited over sapphire substrates using a pulsed atomic-layer epitaxy process that allows precise control of the composition and thickness. A comparative study of devices over sapphire and SiC substrates was done to determine the influence of the epilayer design on the performance parameters and the role of substrate absorption.

Visual Spatial Memory Is Enhanced In Female Rats (But Inhibited In Males) By Dietary Soy Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Timothy W. West, Lilyan Y. Tian, Lihong H. Bu, Daniel L. Simmons, Kenneth Setchell, Herman Adlercreutz Dec 2001

Visual Spatial Memory Is Enhanced In Female Rats (But Inhibited In Males) By Dietary Soy Phytoestrogens, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund, Timothy W. West, Lilyan Y. Tian, Lihong H. Bu, Daniel L. Simmons, Kenneth Setchell, Herman Adlercreutz

Faculty Publications

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined. Results: Female rats receiving lifelong exposure to a high-phytoestrogen containing diet (Phyto-600) acquired the maze faster than females fed a phytoestrogen-free diet (Phyto-free); in males the opposite diet effect was identified. In a separate experiment, at 80 days-of-age, animals fed the Phyto-600 …

Laser Intensity Scaling Through Stimulated Scattering In Optical Fibers, Timothy H. Russell Dec 2001

Laser Intensity Scaling Through Stimulated Scattering In Optical Fibers, Timothy H. Russell

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of stimulated scattering on laser intensity in fiber optic waveguides is examined. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in long, multimode optical waveguides is found to generate a Stokes beam that propagates in the fiber LP01 mode. Additionally, the same process is found to combine multiple laser beams into a single spatially coherent source. Limitations in beam cleanup and combining are also investigated to identify ways to overcome them. The last portion of the dissertation theoretically examines suppression of stimulated Raman scattering in fibers to eliminate the restriction this imposes on the power of a fiber laser or amplifier. The …

Voting Rules In Insolvency Law: A Simple-Game Theoretic Approach, Matthew Braham, Frank Steffen Dec 2001

Voting Rules In Insolvency Law: A Simple-Game Theoretic Approach, Matthew Braham, Frank Steffen

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

A chief characteristic of modern insolvency law in the Canada, Germany, the UK, and the US is its provision for ‘workouts’ or ‘schemes of arrangement’ by which insolvent companies can attempt to rehabilitate the business. If reorganization is chosen, the debtor has to devise a plan of action which will be voted upon by claimants. The voting rules, however, differ in each jurisdiction to a greater or lesser extent and as yet have not been analysed in any rigorous manner. This paper provides an approach based upon the theory of simple games to analyse the rules in terms of the …

Cross-Cultural Acceptance Of The Euro: Assessing The Effectiveness Of Public Information Marketing, Steven W. Staninger

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship

The introduction of the euro currency is a major social, cultural, and economic event in the history of Europe. A massive public information marketing campaign has failed to encourage widespread acceptance of the new currency. This paper analyzes the reasons for this failure, and suggests strategies for future campaigns.
