Student Work

On the night of August 22, 1932, a Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha livestock train was twice detained by an unknown number of farmers on its way from Norfolk, Nebraska, to Sioux City, Iowa. The train was scheduled to arrive in Sioux City at 10:40 P.M. after leaving Norfolk at 6 P.M., but did not reach its final destination until 4 a .m . This episode became front-page news in many newspapers, including those in the metropolitan areas of Omaha and Sioux City, and was even mentioned in the New York Times. The train was halted by a group …

Multiple Discourses In Early Mormon Religion, Jon M. Duncan Aug 1998

Multiple Discourses In Early Mormon Religion, Jon M. Duncan

Theses and Dissertations

The development of early Mormon religion is best viewed in the context of multiple discourses, each of which contained various competing symbols. These discourses shaped the mind and world-view of early Latter-day Saints and determined in part their behavior. Prophetic symbols existed simultaneously with other, more American symbols; and while neither discourse excluded the other, a prophetic discourse gradually came to dominate. At the same time, however, the American discourse in Mormon religion remained intact and continued to influence the behavior and actions of early Mormons.

Body/Text/History: Violation Of Borders In Assia Djebar's Fantasia, David Waterman Jun 1998

Body/Text/History: Violation Of Borders In Assia Djebar's Fantasia, David Waterman

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Assia Djebar's novel Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade (1985) can be read as a political novel which examines the permeability of borders, especially between Algeria and the female body. As the primary site of signification and meaning, the body becomes a text which attempts to circulate knowledge and encourage resistance outside a position of mastery, and the same body/text suffers as it is inscribed by the dominant power. The distinction between nature and culture is interrogated as the borders of the body/text overlap the borders of war, writing, history, and sexuality. Ultimately, given the position of the female body within the …

Within The Wrought-Iron Fence: The Hidden Heritage Of Mccormick Theological Seminary, 1864-1975, Elizabeth K. Ware

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Few people today realize that the black wrought iron fence that runs along the west side of Halsted Street and west on Belden and Fullerton Avenues to the El tracks once defined the grounds of McCormick Theological Seminary, a Presbyterian Seminary. The first major building site in this area, and the first institution, it was truly the cornerstone of our neighborhood. It continued as an important part of this Lincoln Park neighborhood for more than a hundred years.

We see physical evidence of McCormick’s time here in the buildings that remain. But the tightly knit academic, religious and residential community …
