A Study To Determine The Relationship Between Emulsification And Tack Of Offset Lithographic Inks, Naruchart Boonkuernoon Nov 1994

A Study To Determine The Relationship Between Emulsification And Tack Of Offset Lithographic Inks, Naruchart Boonkuernoon

Theses

In offset lithography, ink has been shown to pickup significant quantities of fountain solution as emulsified droplets. Good printability of lithographic inks is dependent on the balance between the flow of ink and water (fountain solution). Water pickup of ink is directly related to emulsification capacity. Emulsification must be controlled by using the correct fountain solution and proper surface tension value of fountain solution. If inks do not properly emulsify, ink tack may vary on the press during printing. Ink tack is expected to strongly influence printability and runnability of offset lithographic inks. Tack measurement is used as a production …

Designing A Typeface, Margaret Luise Koschembahr Nov 1994

Designing A Typeface, Margaret Luise Koschembahr

Theses

The purpose of this project was to design a typeface, using digital methods, and in so doing to explore the use of current type design software. In this project, letterforms that were originally produced by hand with a pen were translated into electronic data, taking the final form of a digital typeface. Photographic images of manuscript letterforms were enlarged; from the enlarged letterforms hand-rendered outlines were created. These outlines were scanned electronically and imported into a type design software program. Digital outlines of each character were created, from which a PostScript typeface was generated and printed. The result of the project …

An Investigation Into The Development Of An Interactive Archival Catalog Of Art Within The Rochester Institute Of Technology, Jill Clayman

Theses

RIT has no complete visual and /or factual catalog of the pieces of art presently displayed in public areas. Many pieces of work on campus are in desperate need of repair as well as plaques to identify the work. Visions, the only known bound record of a selection of artwork on the Henrietta campus, was produced by the RIT Communications Office in 1975. The Archives in Wallace Memorial Library have a small collection of slides of various artworks, however, many works of art are currently missing. Several valuable pieces of work were lost in the move from the city campus …

Single-Gender Education: Is It Beneficial To Society?, Claudius E. Watts Iii Nov 1994

Single-Gender Education: Is It Beneficial To Society?, Claudius E. Watts Iii

Northern Illinois University Law Review

This speech, delivered before the Presbyterian Men of the First and Providence Churches at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, states the case for single-gender education, arguing that it is not only beneficial, but desperately needed in today's society. Claudius Watts explains that men and women have different needs, different desires, and most importantly, different responses to the environments in which they learn and develop. He argues that The Citadel's program is one specifically designed for training and educating young males to become young men, and that it is exceedingly successful in doing so. Finally, he asserts that equality in South …

Tissue Parameter Determination With Mri In The Presence Of Imperfect Radiofrequency Pulses, Xing Li Nov 1994

Tissue Parameter Determination With Mri In The Presence Of Imperfect Radiofrequency Pulses, Xing Li

Theses

Magnetic resonance imaging has the major advantage over other medical imaging modalities in that it can provide superb soft tissue contrast. The contrast in a magnetic resonance image is determined by intrinsic tissue parameters such as spin-lattice relaxation time T1, spin-spin relaxation time T2, and spin density p. These tissue parameters can be extracted from a series of images obtained with appropriately designed pulse sequences, and be used in tissue characterization, classification, etc.. The accuracy of tissue parameter determination, however, is affected by a number of factors, one of which is the inhomogeneity of the radio-frequency (RF) electromagnetic field. In …

A Cube As Form, Jeoung-Eun Lim Nov 1994

A Cube As Form, Jeoung-Eun Lim

Theses

Today science and technology has created a mechanized society for all of us. Often I feel alienated by the people around me. This lack of human compassion often casts my spirits into a state of frustration and despair. My work deals with my personal isolation and memories, and with how these entries are boxed-in or enclosed in ways that are ambiguous. Perhaps they can be interpreted as abstract, representational, two-dimensional, threedimensional, or even, in their distortions, hint at unperceived dimensions. Future, past and present are not parts of continuously flowing time, but they are rather three directions or three dimensions …

Castration As An Alternative To Incarceration: An Impotent Approach To The Punishment Of Sex Offenders, Kari A. Vanderzyl Nov 1994

Castration As An Alternative To Incarceration: An Impotent Approach To The Punishment Of Sex Offenders, Kari A. Vanderzyl

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Although recognized as an acceptable form of punishment in other cultures, castration as a punitive measure has traditionally found limited support in the United States. This comment examines the use of castration as a form of punishment, tracing the procedure from its origins in the eugenics movement in the early twentieth century to the recent popularity of chemical castration as an alternative to incarceration for sex offenders. The comment discusses constitutional challenges to the castration of sex offenders and addresses the economic and social policy considerations implicated by the practice. The author concludes that castration represents an unconstitutional and ineffective …

Griswold V. Connecticut And The Unenumerated Right Of Prvacy, David Helscher Nov 1994

Griswold V. Connecticut And The Unenumerated Right Of Prvacy, David Helscher

Northern Illinois University Law Review

In 1965, the United States Supreme Court recognized a constitutional right of privacy in marital sexual matters in Griswold v. Connecticut. In the thirty years since the decision, privacy rights have been extended to some areas of sexual expression, reproductive choices and classes of individuals. The right of privacy set out in Griswold has not been extended to all areas of sexual matters. An examination of the landmark case, its historical support for the right of privacy, and subsequent case development draw into question the Supreme Court's 1986 decision in Bowers v. Hardwick and possible future appeals based on an …

Indian Child Welfare Act Of 1978: The Congressional Foray Into The Adoption Process, Brian D. Gallagher Nov 1994

Indian Child Welfare Act Of 1978: The Congressional Foray Into The Adoption Process, Brian D. Gallagher

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Adoption law has become the focus of increased media and legal attention in the past few years. In 1978, Congress entered the adoption process, an area traditionally reserved for state regulation, through passage of the Indian Child Welfare Act. This Act was intended to remedy the "wholesale separation of Indian children from their families," which was viewed as being "perhaps the most tragic and destructive aspect of American Indian life ...". This article addresses the effect this Act has had over the past seventeen years. While a definitive statement regarding the success or failure of the act with respect to …

What's Good For The Goose Is Good For The Gander: Toward Recognition Of Men's Reproductive Rights, Mary A. Totz Nov 1994

What's Good For The Goose Is Good For The Gander: Toward Recognition Of Men's Reproductive Rights, Mary A. Totz

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Over the past few decades, gender equality has slowly made its way into many areas of family law where women were once the favored sex. Despite the trend toward treating men and women equally, women continue to have the unilateral right to decide whether a conception, which was jointly formed, will result in parenthood. From the time a pregnancy commences until a fetus is either born or aborted, courts have held that a man has no right to decide whether or not he will become a parent. This comment examines recent changes in society and the law which, in appropriate …

Design And Fabrication Of Lateral High Power Devices For Power Integrated Circuits Applications, Raymond Talacka Nov 1994

Design And Fabrication Of Lateral High Power Devices For Power Integrated Circuits Applications, Raymond Talacka

Theses

The incorporation of high power devices on the same chip as that of the circuitry controlling the high power device has been shown to provide several major advantages over discrete and multichip module designs. The major focus of this work is the development of lateral high power devices that are compatible with R.I.T.'s low power CMOS process. The thrust of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of fabricating Power Integrated Circuits at R.I.T's semiconductor die manufacturing laboratory. As part of the development, several types of high power devices were investigated and the Power MOSFET and IGBT were chosen to …

A Comparison Between Waterless Lithography And Conventional Lithography, Chanassa Pichitgarnka Nov 1994

A Comparison Between Waterless Lithography And Conventional Lithography, Chanassa Pichitgarnka

Theses

Waterless lithography is one of the printing processes that was developed around 1968. It has a strong impact in the current printing industry. Like other printing processes, waterless lithography has both advantages and disadvantages. It is said that waterless lithography can print with more consistency and less dot gain than conventional lithography. However, it has one significant disadvantage, currently there is only one waterless lithographic plate supplier in the industry. There is very little quantitative data describing the waterless lithographic process to support the arguments that waterless lithography prints with more consistency and less dot gain. There is even a …

Near Field Scanning Luminescence And Photothermal Microscopy, Jon Rogers Nov 1994

Near Field Scanning Luminescence And Photothermal Microscopy, Jon Rogers

Theses

A near field optical scanning probe microscope with force regulation is presented. The microscope force regulation uses a differential interferometer for monitoring the tip frequency while the tip provides a sub-wavelength aperture providing a system which simultaneously records topographical information (by the force microscope) and an optical image. The flexibility of the system is evident in the specific applications pursued in this research. Simultaneous force and luminescence images derived from the investigation of porous silicon are presented. We observed variation in luminescence over sub-micron distances. Furthermore, variation in the spectral distribution of small particles of porous silicon was also observed. …

Summary Results Of A Survey Of Economic Development In Texas Cities (Report 95-1), Delbert A. Taebel Nov 1994

Summary Results Of A Survey Of Economic Development In Texas Cities (Report 95-1), Delbert A. Taebel

Center for Economic Development Research and Service Publications

Economic development is the new kid on the block in city government. If one looks at any textbook on municipal administration published more than 10 years ago, economic development as a city function would not even have been mentioned. Yet, because of the dozens of conferences and flurry of articles focusing on economic development, it may seem to many that economic development has been around for a long time. Indeed, seven years ago the Institute of Urban Studies published an initial study entitled "Local Economic Development in Texas." Since then, of course, economic development has become a permanent program in …

Cityscapes: Solitude And Introspection, Fred G. Monti Oct 1994

Cityscapes: Solitude And Introspection, Fred G. Monti

Theses

The paintings, in this series, deal with the psychology of the urban landscape. Sky lines, night scenes, and the human figure were examined. City structures, inhabitants, and the elements which make them up, become symbolic: catalysts for contemplation. The commonplace becomes metaphysical. The city is a foreign vacuum; a spiritual nomads land. Buildings, bus shelters, steel and glass become a compositional prison. Like an enigmatic halfway house, we have entered urban limbo. This group of paintings is a commentary on such imagery. Specifically, they are visual impressions of its numbing effect on the human psyche.

Robust Lateral Control Of Highway Vehicles, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Raymond H. Byrne Oct 1994

Robust Lateral Control Of Highway Vehicles, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Raymond H. Byrne

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Vehicle lateral dynamics are affected by vehicle mass, longitudinal velocity, vehicle inertia, and the cornering stiffness of the tires. All of these parameters are subject to variation, even over the course of a single trip. Therefore, a practical lateral control system must guarantee stability, and hopefully ride comfort, over a wide range of parameter changes. This paper describes a robust controller which theoretically guarantees stability over a wide range of parameter changes. The robust controller is designed using a frequency domain transfer function approach. An uncertainty band in the frequency domain is determined using simulations over the range of expected …

Validation Of Contrast And Phenomenology In The Digital Imaging And Remote Sensing (Dirs) Lab's Image Generation (Dirsig) Model, John Mason, John Schott, Carl Salvaggio, Joseph Sirianni

Presentations and other scholarship

Comparison of the components and the overall fidelity of infrared synthetic image generation models with truth data and imagery is a crucial part of determining model validity and identifying areas in which improvements can be made. The Rochester Institute of Technology's Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation Model, DIRSIG, was validated in the midwave infrared (MWIR) and longwave infrared (LWIR) regions using measured meteorological, material, and radiometric data. Error propagation techniques clearly defmed areas where improvements to the model could be made (e.g. inclusion of clouds). An overall comparison of truth and synthetic images yields RMS errors of as …
