Engaging Social Studies Student Through A Culturally Relevant Student Centered Lesson Plan, Chee Kue Lee

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Student learning and engagement with curriculum has greatly decreased as schools transition back from online education to in person instruction. The COVID-19 global pandemic, increased use of technology, and personal electronic devices are all contributors to student disengagement, however research has shown that student centered approaches and culturally relevant approaches to teaching can positively impact student engagement. Investigating the research question: How can understanding and implementing students’ cultural narratives and identities impact student engagement in the classroom?, this capstone project reviews four themes through its literature review: culturally relevant teaching (CRT), student motivation, student diversity in education, and student …

The Importance Of Black Authorship In Curriculum As A Way To Develop Literacy Skills In Black Students, Aleah Felton Apr 2024

The Importance Of Black Authorship In Curriculum As A Way To Develop Literacy Skills In Black Students, Aleah Felton

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Black students continue to lag behind in literacy scores across the United States. Amidst sweeping book bans and new legislation that seeks to rewrite America’s bloody history, the United States may see a swift return to canonical literature. However, studies demonstrate the need to incorporate multicultural literature in classrooms to increase engagement and develop critical literacy skills. Therefore, the presence of Black authoriship is essential for developing Black literacy–the pursuit of mastery in certain skills, especially reading and writing, amongst Black people. This project seeks to answer the central question: What does it mean to pursue Black Literacy, and how …

Parks And Education, Carson Law

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Parks and education have a substantial correlation. People of all ages, from young to old, learn from their surroundings by spending time in parks. Public parks can play a significant role in a child's education, simultaneously offering a place for learning and free play. Outdoor education is crucial to a child's development, from mental and physical health to social skills and developmental benefits. Outdoor education has two branches: adventure and environmental education. Understanding these branches will help us explore how these experiences must be accessible. The experiences of outdoor, adventure, and environmental education should be accessible to the masses. Race, …

Exploring Student Experience Through Photovoice: A Transformative Approach To Studying School Climate And Culture At Chs, Christopher W. Gold-Thomas

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Student data is an integral part of the decision-making process in classrooms, school buildings, and school districts. However, what is often missed within data collected is student voice. At Castle High School there is a current push to understand current school culture and make positive changes to enhance the student experience. Current forms of data collection methods conducted by the school include surveys and focus groups, but these methods exclude large parts of the student body. Photovoice, a form of qualitative participatory action research engages students in an emancipatory practice that allows them to photograph their experience in the school …

Experiences Of Recent Nebraska Stem Teachers Who Have Left Teaching, Courtney N. Matulka

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Teacher shortages in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields have long been a concern, yet contemporary challenges present a unique predicament. Despite historical recruitment successes, the persistence of this issue has led to temporary solutions that often fall short of addressing the root causes. Consequently, school districts resort to hiring individuals lacking proper certification or expertise, or relying on substitutes, to fill crucial STEM teaching positions. Student academic achievements can be impacted as effective STEM instruction demands not only a deep understanding of the subject matter content but also robust pedagogical practices. To shed light on the complexities surrounding …

The Impact Of Health Insurance Coverage On Short-Term And Long-Term Readmissions To The Emergency Department For Pediatric Patients With Asthma: A Retrospective Regression Analysis, Micheline Plantada

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Inadequate health insurance coverage may hinder the management of asthma in children in recurrent emergency department (ED) visits in comparison to children with health care insurance. Children with asthma who do not have health insurance are at risk of not having access to primary care physicians. They may live in poorer communities, where they are more likely to encounter higher concentrations of asthma-inducing agents or factors contributing to increased healthcare utilization, resulting in increased expenditures and reduced patient outcomes.

This research examines Florida local government policies that address residential development in the places where people, property, and infrastructure are most at risk from both coastal as well as inland storm surges with a purpose of identifying policy norms and variations. In Florida, these at-risk areas are categorized as Coastal High Hazard Areas (CHHA). Under Florida Statutes, the CHHA is defined as the area below the elevation of a Category 1 storm surge line and are those places most likely to be significantly damaged or submerged by sea water. Florida requires that local governments designate CHHA areas within the local …

Effectiveness Of Contact-Based Strategies On Improving Mental Illness Stigma And Help-Seeking Behaviors Within Families, B. Michelle Wilks Mar 2024

Effectiveness Of Contact-Based Strategies On Improving Mental Illness Stigma And Help-Seeking Behaviors Within Families, B. Michelle Wilks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Adolescence is a developmental period that often involves extreme physical, psychological, and emotional changes and sometimes the experience of significant personal and social challenges. In addition to these challenges, youth are trying to find their place in the world and developing their identities, which depend heavily on their relationships with others. Adolescents who struggle with their mental health and also fail to develop meaningful connections with others, tend to have poor self-esteem, self-isolate, are ostracized by others, and have a poor social self-concept, all of which are associated with poor mental health and increased risk for suicidal ideation. The impact …

Sociocultural Factors, Definitions, And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Latina And Hispanic Women, Vanessa Centelles Mar 2024

Sociocultural Factors, Definitions, And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Latina And Hispanic Women, Vanessa Centelles

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pressing public health concern in the United States (US), particularly for women. Some studies have shown that Hispanic and Latina women are at an elevated risk of experiencing IPV due to a notable passiveness of violence among traditional Hispanic and Latina women. Thus, it is crucial for research to examine the effects of sociocultural variables—such as cultural orientation, gender norm beliefs, and ethnic identity—on IPV within this demographic, particularly for women in the US. Furthermore, while the experiences of IPV victimization among Hispanic and Latina women have begun to be recognized in the broader …

Hidden Monstrosities: The Transformation Of Medieval Characters And Conventions In Shakespeare's Romances, Lynette Kristine Kuliyeva Mar 2024

Hidden Monstrosities: The Transformation Of Medieval Characters And Conventions In Shakespeare's Romances, Lynette Kristine Kuliyeva

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When Shakespeare’s First Folio was published in 1623, it was entitled Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies, the title designating the three genres under which his plays would be categorized for the next 250 years. Later, Irish critic Edward Dowden took it upon himself to restructure the Shakespearean canon by adding plays that were not previously published in the First Folio, reclassifying the genres of several of the plays, and establishing a new genre to accompany the previous three: romance. Within this fourth generic category of romance, Dowden situated four of the Shakespearean plays: Pericles, Prince of Tyre; Cymbeline; …

Beliefs Of Male Elementary School Special Education And General Education Teachers Regarding Full Inclusion For Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Saudi Arabia, Sultan Alanazi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

AbstractThe current educational settings for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in Saudi Arabia consist of special institutions for students with intellectual disabilities and special classrooms within public schools. The Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia is interested in full inclusion for students with ASD because of the social, psychological, and educational benefits it can provide them. One crucial factor for achieving full inclusion is considering elementary teachers’ perceptions and beliefs toward full inclusion, as they are one of the primary stakeholders in this venture. Therefore, elementary general education and special education teachers’ beliefs regarding full inclusion for students with …

Making The Invisible Visible: (Re)Envisioning The Black Body In Contemporary Adaptations Of Nineteenth-Century Fiction, Urshela Wiggins Mckinney Mar 2024

Making The Invisible Visible: (Re)Envisioning The Black Body In Contemporary Adaptations Of Nineteenth-Century Fiction, Urshela Wiggins Mckinney

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A trend in neo-Victorian adaptations -- both novels and films-- that reimage, and at times reinterpret, canonical Victorian texts is the inclusion of nonwhite, mainly Black, perspectives, which has gained considerable traction in recent years. A vital aspect of this trend is the purposeful attempt to re-establish iconic Victorian characters through Black characterizations. In doing so, filmmakers and authors are reinvigorating familiar texts to provide an inclusionary space for the Black experience previously ignored in the original texts. These adaptations, which revisit and often reinterpret Victorian fiction, have undergone notable transformations by incorporating Black characters to fill voids in traditional …

An Ecofeminist Ontological Turn: Preparing The Field For A New Ecofeminist Project, M. Laurel-Leigh Meierdiercks Mar 2024

An Ecofeminist Ontological Turn: Preparing The Field For A New Ecofeminist Project, M. Laurel-Leigh Meierdiercks

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ecofeminists have predominantly refuted oppressive conceptual frameworks by rejecting dualistic logic and value hierarchies, despite the foundational view of ontology that underlies our logic and value systems. I argue that ecofeminists must engage in the creative process of articulating an ecofeminist ontology. I demonstrate that the omission of ontological discourse in ecofeminist scholarships is primarily due to the time period during which ecofeminism gained peak traction and their concerns with essentialism. I also show that feminists experienced an ontological turn in the 2000s that produced a new model for ontological theories that would be beneficial for ecofeminists to embrace. In …

Utilizing adapted inventories with established reliability and validity, the following research questions were addressed: 1) What are queer and non-queer band members’ attitudes toward the queer community? 2) What are queer and non-queer band members’ attitudes toward the band as a safe space? 3) What differences exist between the independent …

Buffering Effects Of Negative Intergroup Contact Through Complex Social Identities, Liora Morhayim Mar 2024

Buffering Effects Of Negative Intergroup Contact Through Complex Social Identities, Liora Morhayim

Masters Theses

Although negative intergroup contact occurs less frequently than positive contact, negative contact can more strongly influence outgroup attitudes and behaviors due to the effect of category salience in the generalization process. The present study (N =306) tests whether being aware of an outgroup member’s complex social identity will serve as a buffer against the adverse impact of a negative intergroup contact experience on outgroup attitudes. In a 3X2 between-subjects design, social identity complexity (SIC) of an outgroup confederate (high versus low versus control) and the valence of contact (neutral versus negative) were manipulated. Participants interacted with an outgroup confederate …

'Our Sacred Rights': The Southern Baptist Convention And The Rhetoric Of Oppression, 1845 And Present Day, Katlyn Durand Mar 2024

'Our Sacred Rights': The Southern Baptist Convention And The Rhetoric Of Oppression, 1845 And Present Day, Katlyn Durand

Masters Theses

My master’s thesis focuses on the endurance of white supremacy and patriarchy in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), founded in 1845 and currently the largest Protestant denomination in the United States. I look at two moments in the SBC’s history and place these moments within their broader contexts to elucidate the political and cultural characteristics that shaped these moments: its founding in 1845 upon proslavery partisanship, as well as its current sexual abuse scandal. I argue that the Nullification Crisis of 1828-1834 and the cult of domesticity greatly influenced SBC policy and culture at its origins. Additionally, I examine the …

Master of Arts in Classical Studies

This research endeavor seeks to explore how to assess a classically educated student. A classical Christian education differs from modern education, and the evaluation of the student must differ. This research focuses on determining how a classical student could best be assessed using strategies already proven by educational research. Overall, there needs to be more tools to equip a classical educator to evaluate students, and the existing tools need to be supported by research. This research seeks to give sound evidence to develop a potential method of classical assessment to measure a student’s academic growth that could be utilized by …

Women's Perspectives On Their Own Interest And Career Development In Male-Dominated Dental Specialties, Rachel Hamilton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dentistry has traditionally been a male-dominated profession. However, the past decade has seen a steady improvement in gender equality in dental schools around the United States. For the first time in 2018, the entering class in dental schools had more women enrolled than men. While women have achieved equality in receiving undergraduate dental education, they remain significantly underrepresented in advanced training of three dental specialties including endodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics. The purpose of this case study is to explore why women remain underrepresented in these specialties of the dental field by learning from six women’s personal experiences to understand …

More Than Just Checking A Box: Teachers' Experiences Of Transformation In Equity-Focused Professional Learning, Melissa E. Moxley Mar 2024

More Than Just Checking A Box: Teachers' Experiences Of Transformation In Equity-Focused Professional Learning, Melissa E. Moxley

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Pennsylvania has the largest disparity between student and faculty demographics. In fact, over half of Pennsylvania schools employ zero teachers of color. As student demographics change and teacher demographics remain the same, there is an ever-increasing need to train in-service teachers on diversity, equity, and inclusion tenets. Training teachers to be culturally competent requires them to alter their understandings in a transformational way. Often, cash-strapped districts attempt to produce training sessions in-house, developed by administrators who may have little training in the area themselves. This leads to professional learning that is left in the conference room once teachers leave. Research …
