The Informed Imagination: Researching And Building A Character’S Identity, Jeremy William Hilgert Dec 2001

The Informed Imagination: Researching And Building A Character’S Identity, Jeremy William Hilgert

Theses and Dissertations

An actor’s duty to the play is to present the most fully formed and vivid interpretation of the character. To do so, the actor must have an understanding of how that particular character developed their own sense of identity. This should be constructed not from the actor’s personal experience but from an informed imaginative experience founded on research and analysis. As pedagogues we are challenged with attempting to give young actors the skills for such an analysis. I have developed a formula to aid the actor in creating the foundations for such an interpretation founded upon the sociological understanding of …

The Relationship Between Self-Perceived Benefit As Measured By The Aphab, Cosi And Cphi And The Presence Of Apd In An Elderly Population, Michelle L. Bleiweiss Dec 2001

The Relationship Between Self-Perceived Benefit As Measured By The Aphab, Cosi And Cphi And The Presence Of Apd In An Elderly Population, Michelle L. Bleiweiss

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The self-perceived hearing aid benefit of 38 participants was examined. Of the 38 subjects, 8 were found to have an auditory processing disorder as measured by the Dichotic Sentence Identification (DSI). When compared to the non-APD subjects, there were essentially no significant differences on the APHAB or COSI outcome measures. However, two of the 5 scales of the CHPI did show significant differences. In conclusion, these results do not support the notion of APD having a negative effect on hearing aid benefit. No finding in this study was robust and although there were several trends supporting that APD may impede …

The Mentor Relationship In African American Adolescent Literature, Roynetta D. Douglas Dec 2001

The Mentor Relationship In African American Adolescent Literature, Roynetta D. Douglas

Honors Theses

The mentor relationship in African-American adolescent literature underscores the idea that young people can benefit from the counsel of caring adults outside their immediate families. In this ethnic specific subgroup, families may often suffer from financial strain due to single parent households or lack of career options. For that reason, many African-American adolescents either seek or happen upon a non-familial adult who helps them navigate through adolescence. This type of relationship, with its success and its pain, is vividly apparent in many novels geared toward young African-American girls.

Reduced Order Modeling For High Speed Flows With Moving Shocks, David J. Lucia Dec 2001

Reduced Order Modeling For High Speed Flows With Moving Shocks, David J. Lucia

Theses and Dissertations

The use of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) for reduced order modeling (ROM) of fluid problems is extended to high-speed compressible fluid flows. The challenge in using POD for high-speed flows is presented by the presence of moving discontinuities in the flow field. To overcome these difficulties, a domain decomposition approach is developed that isolates the region containing the moving shock wave for special treatment. The domain decomposition implementation produces internal boundaries between the various domain sections. The domains are linked using optimization-based solvers which employ constraints to ensure smoothness in overlapping portions of the internal boundary. This approach is applied …

Genetic Dissection Of Behavioral And Neurogenomic Responses To Acute Ethanol, Aaron Wolen Dec 2001

Genetic Dissection Of Behavioral And Neurogenomic Responses To Acute Ethanol, Aaron Wolen

Theses and Dissertations

Individual differences in initial sensitivity to ethanol are strongly related to the heritable risk of alcoholism in humans. To elucidate key molecular networks that modulate ethanol sensitivity we performed a systems genetics analysis of ethanol-responsive gene expression in brain regions of the mesocorticolimbic reward circuit (prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens and ventral midbrain) across the BXD RI panel, a highly diverse family of isogenic mouse strains before and after treatment with ethanol. Acute ethanol altered the expression of ~2,750 genes in one or more regions and 400 transcripts were jointly modulated in all three. Ethanol-responsive gene networks were extracted with a …

Mitochondrial Dna Haplotype And Sequence Analysis Of Historic Choctaw And Menominee Hair Shaft Samples, Lori Elmore Baker

Doctoral Dissertations

Franz Boas organized the collection of information for over 15,000 Native Americans for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. Of these individuals, 2482 individuals gave hair samples that are currently stored at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Now, over 100 years and many technical advances later, the information amassed from these Native American individuals is being reanalyzed to provide a genetic dimension to the analysis of this collection. A new method for the extraction of DNA from aged hair shaft samples was developed and applied in this study. This is the first successful report of research …

The Effects Of Expertise And Information Relevance On Information Search Strategy., Jason Lebsack

Student Work

Differences between experts and novices have been the focus of a variety of studies throughout the psychological literature. In general, task outcome differences have been found between experts and novices, but further study is needed to understand the mechanism for explaining these outcome differences. This study investigated taskprocessing differences between experts and novices, specifically, the use of relevant and irrelevant information. Forty human resource professionals served as experts and 40 undergraduate students served as novices in this study. Participants made two hiring decisions. Using an information board format, participants examined eight attributes across six candidates for the job of museum …

Repercussions Of The Dawes Act: Leasing, Citizenship And Jurisdiction On The Omaha And Winnebago Reservations, 1887-1896, Matthew J. Krezenski Dec 2001

Repercussions Of The Dawes Act: Leasing, Citizenship And Jurisdiction On The Omaha And Winnebago Reservations, 1887-1896, Matthew J. Krezenski

Student Work

The General Allotment Act, or Dawes Severalty Act, passed in 1887, had terrible repercussions for the Native American. Although the negative effects of the Act were widespread across the entire country, the separate impacts on individual reservations varied. On the Omaha and Winnebago Reservations in northeastern Nebraska, the Indians faced an entirely new range of problems after allotment, problems which continue to complicate the lives of residents even today. Whites not only purchased “surplus” lands, but also sought to appropriate the allotted land through dubious leasing schemes. The citizenship clause in the Dawes Act was particularly perplexing. Ostensibly, the Act …

Synthesis And Spectroscopic Study Of 1,1 '-Bis-(2-Naphthol) Sulfide And Some Ester Derivatives, Emmanuel Enwelim Onwuachi

Theses (Pre-2016)

The refined synthesis of 1,1 '-bis-(2-naphthol) sulfide and the syntheses of the related acetate, propionate and phenoxyacetate ester derivatives are reported with IR and NMR spectroscopic analysis and proton signal assignments. The synthesis of 1,1'-bis-(2-naphthol) sulfide is found to be more effective at an ambient temperature of O°C and possibly lower, not under reflux conditions as previously reported. The spectroscopic data strongly indicate that all four compounds were synthesized. The IR spectra showed a band at 3692.63 em" for the hydroxide moiety of 1,1 '-bis-(2-naphthol) sulfide and the typical carbonyl stretching band around 1700 em" for the esters. The FT-NMR …

Age Structure, Species Composition And Succession In A Loess Hills Woodland., Peter Christian Phillips Dec 2001

Age Structure, Species Composition And Succession In A Loess Hills Woodland., Peter Christian Phillips

Student Work

The Loess Hills of central North America is a unique geologic region that historically was dominated by prairie with scattered oak trees in an environment of frequent fires. Following European settlement, woody-plant cover expanded throughout the Loess Hills so that today, existing prairies occur as remnants surrounded by an oak-dominated woodland. Large-, intermediate-, and small-sized trees were sampled along three adjacent lowland-to-upland belt-transects in western Iowa to document more accurately the dynamics of this woody expansion. Trees were cored or cross-sectioned and dated using standard dendrochronological techniques. Results characterize the pre-1850 woody canopy as consisting of a few widely scattered …

Lichens Of The Ponderosa Pine Forests Of Nebraska., Sara M. Morgan Dec 2001

Lichens Of The Ponderosa Pine Forests Of Nebraska., Sara M. Morgan

Nebraska has five main pine forest regions dominated by Pinus ponderosa Laws, with other small naturally forested areas scattered in pockets across the state (Kaul & Rolfsmeier 1993). Three of these main forest areas occur naturally: the Pine Ridge in northwestern Nebraska, the Wildcat Hills south of the city of Scottsbluff, and the Niobrara River Valley in the north-central portion of the state. These three natural coniferous forest communities are similar in having gentle to steep slopes, well-drained sandy soils, and sandstone outcrops (Steinauer & Rolfsmeier 2000). The Pine Ridge area in Dawes, Sheridan, and Sioux counties is the largest …

Investigating Trust In The Mentoring Relationship: The Beginning Teacher's Perspective, Nancy Ann Edick Dec 2001

Investigating Trust In The Mentoring Relationship: The Beginning Teacher's Perspective, Nancy Ann Edick

Student Work

The focus of this dissertation was to investigate the beginning teacher's perspective on trust in the mentor-beginning teacher relationship. This was a qualitative study rooted in grounded theory modified to accommodate the use of received theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). The investigative framework was based on two received theories, and each theory formed the foundation for the following research questions: (1) Gabarro's (1978) theory predicts that work place trust in an associate will be affected by her perceptions of the associate's character, competence, and judgment. Is this true in the case of the beginning teachers as they do or do …

Pedogenic Relationships In A Texas Vertisol Climosequence Defined By Geochemical Mass Balance Of Whole Soil And Chemistry Of Iron-Manganese Nodules, Cynthia A. Stiles Dec 2001

Pedogenic Relationships In A Texas Vertisol Climosequence Defined By Geochemical Mass Balance Of Whole Soil And Chemistry Of Iron-Manganese Nodules, Cynthia A. Stiles

Doctoral Dissertations

Climosequence Vertisol profiles derived from the Upper Beaumont Formation in the Gulf Coastal Prairie physiographic province of Texas were examined for geochemical trends ascribed to different precipitation regimes. Mass-balance relationships were utilized for the comparisons. Compositional differences in zirconium (Zr) content between the solum and lower sub-soil precluded it use an immobile strain (volumetric change) indicator. This difference was correlated to sand weight percent (r2 = 0.65**). Titanium (Ti) content did not shift correlatively with depth, thus making Ti the preferred strain index element for mass-balance calculations. Depths at which the Zr compositions shifted were not directly related to …

Base Closure Impacts And The General Effects Of Military Installations On Local Private Employment, Patrick E. Poppert Dec 2001

Base Closure Impacts And The General Effects Of Military Installations On Local Private Employment, Patrick E. Poppert

Doctoral Dissertations

This empirical study explores the general effects of military installations on local employment, and the special case of closure under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) proceedings of 1988, 1991, 1993, and 1995. Employment impacts are modeled in a partial adjustment construct, and both random and fixed effects specifications of the disturbance term are evaluated. The analysis also includes both levels and changes forms of the model. The latter approach facilitates decomposition of defense personnel changes into its positive, negative, and BRAC related components. These components are examined for asymmetrical effects attributable to the public goods and community infrastructure vacuum …
