Everything I Thought I Was Supposed To Do, Jeff Conefry Dec 2017

Everything I Thought I Was Supposed To Do, Jeff Conefry

Theses and Dissertations

It is within the liminal space between traditional mediums that my creative practice deconstructs the materiality of painting to subvert historical expectations. The irony associated with this deconstruction, excavates one medium to generate the building blocks for something inimitable. These blocks are most easily re-categorized into Words, Limits, and Power. It is these three themes that are the foundation of my thesis exhibition.

Application Of Order-Reduction Techniques In The Multiscale Analysis Of Composites, Trenton Mitchell Ricks Dec 2017

Application Of Order-Reduction Techniques In The Multiscale Analysis Of Composites, Trenton Mitchell Ricks

Theses and Dissertations

Multiscale analysis procedures for composites often involve coupling the macroscale (e.g., structural) and meso/microscale (e.g., ply, constituent) levels. These procedures are often computationally inefficient and thus are limited to coarse subscale discretizations. In this work, various computational strategies were employed to enhance the efficiency of multiscale analysis procedures. An ensemble averaging technique was applied to stochastic microscale simulation results based on the generalized method of cells (GMC) to assess the discretization required in multiscale models. The procedure was shown to be applicable for micromechanics analyses involving both elastic materials with damage and viscoplastic materials. A trade-off in macro/microscale discretizations was …

Toward A Molecular Mechanism Of Phase Separation In Disordered Elastin-Like Proteins, Yue Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Since the last decade, an increasing number of proteins have been shown to be capable of undergoing reversible liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in response to an external stimulus, and the resulting protein-rich phase (coacervate) is considered as one of the main components of membrane-less organelles. Most of these proteins are intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) or contain intrinsically disordered regions. More importantly, LLPS often plays an important role in cellular signaling and development of cells and tissues. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying LLPS of proteins remain poorly understood. Elastin-like proteins (ELPs), a class of IDPs derived from the hydrophobic domains of …
