A Bibliography Of Faculty Scholarship, Kathryn J. Dufour Law Library
Scholarly Articles
The purpose of this bibliography is to record in one place the substantial body of scholarship produced by the current faculty at the Catholic University, Columbus School of Law. From its humble beginnings under the tutelage of founding Dean William Callyhan Robinson, through its adolescent period when, like so many other American law schools, it was trying to define its pedagogical niche, to its eventual merger with the Columbus University Law School in 1954, the law school at Catholic University has always retained a scholarly and remarkably productive faculty. The sheer quantity of writing, the breadth of research and the …

Reid Technique, An Effective 45-Year-Old Interrogation Technique? Or An Outdated Technique?, James A. Campoverde
Masters Theses
The Reid Technique is a 45-year-old technique that has not been revised. It is the most widely used method of interrogation but has led to numerous wrongful convictions. The Reid Technique can be an effective tool but shouldn't be the only interrogation tool used by law enforcement agencies. Other methods of interrogation can be used other than the Reid Technique.

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Lethality Assessment Program In Managing Domestic Violence Rates, Madison P. Jordan
Masters Theses
The Lethality Assessment Program was implemented into law enforcement procedures to help manage domestic violence. This eleven-item questionnaire evaluates the risk of lethality of the victim by asking questions about the relationship. Therefore, depending on risk law enforcement can connect the victim with resources. Domestic violence has had rising recognition across the world creating laws to protect victims. However, there is a need for research on domestic violences and the procedures put into place. The Lethality Assessment Program is one of the many diverse ways used to protect victims. The State of Virginia’s law enforcement is required to use it …

The Connections Among Adoption, Attachment, And Violence, Victoria M. Sanders
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Research regarding the experience and outcomes for adopted children has largely ended upon the individual turning 18 years old and has failed to provide adequate information about how adoption impacts an individual throughout the lifespan. Because of a lack of information gathering from the Department of Justice, there is little information about the incarceration rates of adopted individuals and the reasons for those incarcerations. This qualitative research study seeks to gain a better understanding of those individuals who were adopted and committed murder at some point after they were adopted. Court records, transcripts, motions, and evidence related to the murders …

An Investigation Of Law Enforcement Officer Background And Personality: A Study Of The Effects Of Education And Time In Service On Personality Characteristics, Courtney A. Claiborne
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Within the last ten years, the actions of law enforcement officers have received increased attention, particularly in events involving disproportionate use of force. However, researchers and individuals should not generalize all law enforcement officers based on these incidents. In other words, the actions of law enforcement officers in these incidents should not be used as a basis to predetermine the actions of all law enforcement officers. Therefore, examining law enforcement officers' personalities and backgrounds is one way to understand individual police officers better. Through an exploratory research study, the researcher was able to examine the effect education and time in …

Assessment Of Sexual Violence Risk Perception In Men Who Have Sex With Men: Proposal For The Development And Validation Of "G-Date"., D. J. Angelone, Damon Mitchell, Brooke Wells, Megan Korovich, Alexandra Nicoletti, Dustin Fife
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
BACKGROUND: Sexual violence (SV) is a significant problem for sexual minorities, including men who have sex with men (MSM). The limited research suggests SV is associated with a host of syndemic conditions. These factors tend to cluster and interact to worsen one another. Unfortunately, while much work has been conducted to examine these factors in heterosexual women, there is a lack of research examining MSM, especially their SV risk perception. Further, MSM are active users of dating and sexual networking (DSN) mobile apps, and this technology has demonstrated usefulness for creating safe spaces for MSM to meet and engage partners. …

We Are The Ai Problem, Tonja Jacobi, Matthew Sag
We Are The Ai Problem, Tonja Jacobi, Matthew Sag
Emory Law Journal Online
This Essay describes what we call “the Black Nazi Problem,” a shorthand for the sometimes-jarring text and images produced by AI, from the incongruous—such as female Indian popes—to the outrageous—such as depicting minorities as their own historical oppressors, including Black Nazis. These images were the result of overzealous efforts by AI developers to correct for a lack of diverse representation in the training data used to create Generative AI models. The overrepresentation of white, fully-abled, Western men in images of high status categories, and the invisibility of women, people of color, and the disabled, except in low status categories, and …

Past And Present Of The Cvs: Empirical Research And Evidence-Based Policy, Kevin T. Wolff
Publications and Research
In this keynote address, I emphasized the critical role of accurate crime measurement in developing evidence-based policies. I discussed the "dark figure of crime," highlighting how many crimes go unreported, and stressed the importance of victimization surveys in uncovering these hidden crimes to provide a more complete picture of criminal activity.
I also explored how technological advancements, particularly AI, are transforming how we collect and analyze crime data. While AI offers significant benefits in predictive policing and resource allocation, I cautioned about the risks of bias and privacy issues that must be managed carefully.
Regional collaboration, standardization, and inclusivity are …

Strategies For Addressing Substance Abuse And Gambling Among Youth, Kevin T. Wolff
Publications and Research
This keynote address opens with a description of recent trends in substance use and gambling among youth, sharing insights from relevant research. I highlight that while some global trends indicate a decline in adolescent substance use, other areas, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, have seen increases. I emphasize the importance of comprehensive prevention strategies, such as school-based, community-based, and family-based programs, and effective treatment approaches like behavioral interventions and integrated mental health services.
On the topic of youth gambling, I highlight the rising normalization and accessibility of gambling, particularly through the internet. I describe specific challenges in regions like South …

Minority Students' Attitudes Toward Reading Among Those Exposed To Mirror Books And Those Who Were Not: A Causal-Comparative Study, Valcine Dyonne Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this dissertation is to conduct a quantitative, quasi-experimental, causal-comparative study to measure the impact of mirror books on high school sophomores’ attitudes toward reading. This study responds to a need identified by educational researchers that the link between motivation and reading be methodically examined. This research study had 43 tenth-grade students in the treatment group and 31 in the control group, for a total of 73 out of 432 sophomore students composing a convenience sample. Groups were determined by their placement in their ELA course by the course generator used at the public high school. The participating …
Examining The Needs Of Administrators, Teachers, And Professional Staff In An Elementary School Moving To Become A Trauma-Sensitive School: A Single Instrumental Case Study, Samantha Nicole George
Examining The Needs Of Administrators, Teachers, And Professional Staff In An Elementary School Moving To Become A Trauma-Sensitive School: A Single Instrumental Case Study, Samantha Nicole George
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This single instrumental case study discovered the needs of a Central Virginia elementary school as it moved toward becoming a trauma-sensitive school. The theory informing this study was Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) ecological systems theory, as it provided a framework to explore the instrumental role of administrators, teachers, and professional staff in the complex system of relationships that support child development in the microsystem of the school. Participants were recruited from one elementary school in Central Virginia after obtaining IRB approval from Liberty University. Data collection entailed surveys, interviews, and focus groups to describe the needs of administrators, teachers, and professional staff …
Moral Panic In The Modern Era: The Effects Of Moral Panic On Policy Implemented Through The Field Of Law Enforcement, Charles J. Oakley
Moral Panic In The Modern Era: The Effects Of Moral Panic On Policy Implemented Through The Field Of Law Enforcement, Charles J. Oakley
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study employed a grounded qualitative approach to explore the intricate relationship between moral panic and public administration policy in the subfield of law enforcement administration. Using a nationwide survey derived from the U.S. Major Cities Chief Association census, postsurvey interviews and employing document analysis and crime statistics, the research investigated the impact of moral panic-induced policy decisions on law enforcement agencies from 2018 to 2022. Social media emerged as a significant catalyst, fueling public outrage and facilitating political rent-seeking. The punctuated equilibrium theory highlights abrupt budgetary and policy shifts notably found in a surge of legislative initiatives in 2021. …
Public Mass Shootings In Texas And California: Routine Activity Theory Comparisons, Mason R. Feinartz
Public Mass Shootings In Texas And California: Routine Activity Theory Comparisons, Mason R. Feinartz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Public mass shootings are a distinct and unique phenomenon that receives vast media and public attention due to the location, weapons used, and amount of people killed or injured. These mass shootings occur in places where people frequent daily in their routine activities and are unexpected, seemingly random, or symbolic events. This study used a casual-comparative quantitative research design using routine activity theory as the foundation to investigate public mass shootings in Texas and California from 1966 to 2023. This study used public open-source data collection and analysis to identify and substantiate all mass shootings that satisfy the research inclusion/exclusion …
The Politics Of Possession And Gun Violence: The Bruen Decision's Impact On Firearm Regulation, Jacob Butler
The Politics Of Possession And Gun Violence: The Bruen Decision's Impact On Firearm Regulation, Jacob Butler
JCLC Online
States struggle to implement new firearms policies because they are
limited by two major forces: the political feasibility of passing new firearms
legislation and an increasingly broad and individualized Second Amendment
right. Due to this conflict, states continually return to one of few
constitutional yet politically popular methods of gun control: enacting
possession-based firearms laws. These laws are largely ineffective at
reducing gun violence.
In the 2022 Supreme Court decision New York Rifle and Pistol
Association v. Bruen, the Court further expanded the scope of the Second
Amendment to protect the individual’s right to bear arms outside of the …
