An Experimental Study On The Spray And Thermal Characteristics Of R134a Two-Phase Flashing Spray, Zhou Zhifu, Wu Weitao, Chen Bin, Guo-Xiang Wang, Guo Liejin Apr 2015

An Experimental Study On The Spray And Thermal Characteristics Of R134a Two-Phase Flashing Spray, Zhou Zhifu, Wu Weitao, Chen Bin, Guo-Xiang Wang, Guo Liejin

Dr. Guo-Xiang Wang

Flashing spray of volatile liquids is a common phenomenon observed in many industrial applications such as fuel injection of engines, accidental release of flammable and toxic pressure-liquefied gases, failure of a vessel or pipe in the form of a small hole in chemical industry, and cryogenic spray cooling in laser dermatology, etc. In flashing spray, the volatile liquid is depressurized rapidly at the exit of a nozzle (or a hole in a vessel) and becomes superheated. Such superheated liquid (in the form of either a jet or droplets) will lead to explosive atomization with fine droplet and a short spray …

The Role Of Family Ownership In International Entrepreneurship: Exploring Nonlinear Effects, Salvatore Sciascia, Pietro Mazzola, Joseph H. Astrachan, Torsten M. Pieper

Torsten M Pieper

Empirical research on international entrepreneurship is growing, but results on the role of family ownership in this phenomenon are inconsistent. We believe these inconsistencies owe to prior researchers having not yet investigated nonlinear relationships. Drawing on opposing perspectives of stewardship and stagnation, we explore potential benefits and drawbacks of family ownership for international entrepreneurship and explore nonlinear relationships among these two variables. Using a sample of 1,035 US family businesses and applying ordinal regression analysis, we find an inverted U-shaped relationship between family ownership and international entrepreneurship: International entrepreneurship is maximized when family ownership stands at moderate levels. We discuss …

Ideas And Collaborative Governance: A Discursive Localism Approach, Neil Bradford Dec 2014

Ideas And Collaborative Governance: A Discursive Localism Approach, Neil Bradford

Neil Bradford

In recent years, interest has grown in collaboration in public policy. Responding to the complex issues now playing out in cities, scholars are focusing on localized governance relations that blur boundaries between public, private, and community sectors. This article introduces discursive localism as a framework to understand better collaborative urban governance. It argues that ideas play a pivotal role in motivating collective action, channeling policy resources, and shaping governance relations. Although recent urban-focused accounts of collective action suggest a role for ideas, systematic attention to their normative-philosophical and cognitive-programmatic dimensions reveals how different policy discourses frame incentives and institutions for …

Ideologies Of Language And Race In Us Media Discourse About The Trayvon Martin Shooting, Adam Hodges Dec 2014

Ideologies Of Language And Race In Us Media Discourse About The Trayvon Martin Shooting, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

This article examines the discourse about race and racism that ensued in the US media after the shooting death of an African American youth, Trayvon Martin, by a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, in February 2012. The analysis examines news programs from the three major cable television channels in the United States: CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. The theoretical framework builds upon Hill’s (2008) discussion of the ‘folk theory of race and racism’ in contrast to critical race theory, and asks, to what extent does the mainstream media’s discourse about race remain embedded in folk ideas and to what extent …

The Paranoid Style In Politics: Ideological Underpinnings Of The Discourse Of Second Amendment Absolutism, Adam Hodges Dec 2014

The Paranoid Style In Politics: Ideological Underpinnings Of The Discourse Of Second Amendment Absolutism, Adam Hodges

Adam Hodges

In American politics, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has asserted itself as a leading voice in the gun rights movement. The strident rhetoric emanating from the NRA leadership impacts the development of a broader discourse in American public life over gun rights — a discourse of Second Amendment absolutism — that articulates a set of assumptions and explanations in defense of an absolutist stance against gun regulation in any form. This paper examines the ideologies that underlie this absolutist discourse and the identities those ideologies help to construct. In particular, the absolutist discourse is analyzed through the lens of what …

“Stick With Yourselves; It’S What’S Normal”: The Intergroup Racial Attitudes Of Senior, White, Fraternity Men, Demetri L. Morgan, Hilary B. Zimmerman, Tanner N. Terrell, Beth A. Marcotte Dec 2014

“Stick With Yourselves; It’S What’S Normal”: The Intergroup Racial Attitudes Of Senior, White, Fraternity Men, Demetri L. Morgan, Hilary B. Zimmerman, Tanner N. Terrell, Beth A. Marcotte

Demetri L. Morgan, Ph.D.

Substantive cross-racial interaction on college campuses has been known to have positive effects on student learning and development (Chang, Astin, & Kim, 2004). However, literature shows that students from different minoritized racial groups often remain separated from majority White groups, such as fraternities, thus prohibiting each group to realize the benefits such interaction could offer (Sidanius, Laar, Levin, & Sinclair, 2004). Utilizing focus group methods, this study investigated the racial attitudes of 20 senior, White, Interfraternity Council men in order to better show how the fraternity culture and experience influence the racial attitudes of members. This study found four themes …

Global Delivery Models: The Role Of Talent, Speed And Time Zones In The Global Outsourcing Industry, Stephan Manning, Marcus Larsen, Pratyush Bharati Dec 2014

Global Delivery Models: The Role Of Talent, Speed And Time Zones In The Global Outsourcing Industry, Stephan Manning, Marcus Larsen, Pratyush Bharati

Pratyush Bharati

We investigate antecedents and contingencies of location configurations supporting global delivery models (GDMs) in global outsourcing. GDMs are a new form of IT-enabled client-specific investment promoting services provision integration with clients by exploiting client proximity and time-zone spread allowing for 24/7 service delivery and access to resources. Based on comprehensive data we show that providers are likely to establish GDM configurations when clients value access to globally distributed talent pools and speed of service delivery, and in particular when services are highly commoditized. Findings imply that coordination across time zones increasingly affects international operations in business-to-business and born-global industries.

Better Knowledge With Social Media? Exploring The Roles Of Social Capital And Organizational Knowledge Management, Pratyush Bharati, Wei Zhang, Abhijit Chaudhury Dec 2014

Better Knowledge With Social Media? Exploring The Roles Of Social Capital And Organizational Knowledge Management, Pratyush Bharati, Wei Zhang, Abhijit Chaudhury

Pratyush Bharati

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore social media’s impact on organizational knowledge quality through the theoretical lens of social capital and resource exchange. Design/methodology/approach – Theory-confirming, quantitative study using panel data collected through web-based survey Findings – The results show that while social media affect structural capital and cognitive capital directly, it only affects relational capital indirectly through structural and cognitive capital. Moreover, overall social media and the enhanced social capital do help promote organizational efforts in knowledge management, which subsequently leads to higher level of organizational knowledge quality. Research limitations/implications – All survey respondents were …

Connecting To Get Things Done: A Conceptual Model Of The Process Used To Respond To Bias Incidents, Lucy A. Lepeau, Demetri L. Morgan, Hilary B. Zimmerman, J.T. Snipes, Beth A. Marcotte Dec 2014

Connecting To Get Things Done: A Conceptual Model Of The Process Used To Respond To Bias Incidents, Lucy A. Lepeau, Demetri L. Morgan, Hilary B. Zimmerman, J.T. Snipes, Beth A. Marcotte

Demetri L. Morgan, Ph.D.

In this study, we interviewed victims of bias incidents and members of a bias response team to investigate the process the team used to respond to incidents. Incidents included acts of sexism, homophobia, and racism on a large, predominantly White research university in the Midwest. Data were analyzed using a 4-stage coding process. The emergent model focused on the way the bias response team members connected to students, other team members, and colleagues from across campus to respond to the bias incidents. Important tensions that team members navigate also became evident and are depicted in the model. Findings from this …
