Can Small Investors Survive Social Security Privatization?, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington
Can Small Investors Survive Social Security Privatization?, Elisabeth Brooke Harrington
Brooke Harrington
It has become nearly axiomatic in this country to argue that everything would be better off if it were run like a business. In response, government has shifted its mission: if it used to operate like Super Glue, bonding Americans to one another, it is now working more like WD-40, minimizing friction in the pursuit of individual (and corporate) profit. Social Security is not only the largest government program, but the embodiment of the Super Glue approach to politics: the ultimate test case for privatization.
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: Psychological Or Somatic?, Richard B. Philp
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity: Psychological Or Somatic?, Richard B. Philp
Richard B. Philp
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is one of a complex group of related disorders that includes fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, acute anxiety disorder, and sick building syndrome that share some symptomatology and that are sometimes grouped under the category of idiopathic environmental intolerance or IEIs. In MCS the individual (female in 4 of 5 cases) reacts in an aversive manner to a host of inhaled chemicals (odors) after an initial “sensitizing” exposure. This group is characterized by the absence of any definitive, objective, diagnostic criteria. Because of this these conditions are generally felt to have a predominantly psychological etiology. Nevertheless, there …

Annotated Bibliography Of The Legal Literature Of The Dominican Republic, Juan Javier Del Granado, Mónika Infante Henríquez
Juan Javier del Granado
This article assembles a suggested reading list of law books from the Dominican Republic for those seeking to explore and delve into the richness of this national legal literature. Although the authors are careful to point out that broad conclusions are not supported by their limited methodology, the books were chosen for their scholarly authority. The books make up a core of distinctly doctrinal sources (digests, annotated codes, encyclopedias, treatises, and certain monographs) recommended by legal practitioners from across the nation.

Age, Language, Culture, And Lexical Content: Influences On The Interpretation Of Novel Idioms, Ellen H. Courtney
Age, Language, Culture, And Lexical Content: Influences On The Interpretation Of Novel Idioms, Ellen H. Courtney
Ellen H Courtney
This study investigates children’s developing abilities in interpreting novel idioms presented in isolation and in contexts that support figurative interpretations. In total, 137 children (aged 6;5 to 11;0) and 24 adults were tested in English or Spanish in both conditions. Participants included 101 children from Texas, and 36 from Mexico. Success in developing figurative interpretations in both conditions improved with age. The relative transparency of the individual idioms presented in isolation differed for adults and children. Although no differences were observed between English and Spanish speakers, the Mexican children outperformed their Texan counterparts in the no-context condition. Figurative-biasing contexts helped …

This is the Keynote Address for “IPOs and the Internet Age: The Case for Updated Regulations,” a symposium held at The Ohio State University Michael E. Moritz College of Law. Initial public offerings (“IPOs”) are an exercise in asymmetrical valuation. One mechanism for bridging these asymmetries is a private financial intermediary to conduct price discovery by meeting with preferred investors. An alternate mechanism is an auction, such as a descending-bid or Dutch procedure, to conduct price discovery by soliciting bids from all prospective investors. Recent disenchantment with the relationship between issuers and intermediaries has prompted some to hail (online) auction-based …

The Pitfalls In The Nigerian Federalism, Ozy B. Orluwene Jp
The Pitfalls In The Nigerian Federalism, Ozy B. Orluwene Jp
Dr Ozy B.Orluwene,JP
ABSTRACT The paper is primarily examining the pitfalls in Nigeria’s federalism. Theoretically, federalism as a system of government and power arrangement is crafted deliberately to deal with a sociological complex polity as presented in Nigeria’s multi-ethnic, multi-linguistic and multi-religious composition. But there exist wide gaps between theory and practice, vision and reality, with the data of governance being replete with many contradictions, controversies, paradoxes and crises emanating from the persistent stagnation and diminution that follow fragile practice of federalism. Rather than improving the quality of governance and practice, it tends to diminutates and validates the fact and conclusion that the …

Field-Based Science Education With A Community Service Learning Focus, William H. Robertson
Field-Based Science Education With A Community Service Learning Focus, William H. Robertson
William H. Robertson
Field-based program of studies for future teachers provides opportunities for powerful learning through a dialectical union of reflection and action. Methods courses in academic disciplines are linked with seminars and coursework on community partnerships, critical pedagogy and culturally responsive education. This article illustrates the processes of planning, implementation and evaluation of this approach, highlighting the impacts of community service learning on parents, families, students, and schools with a focus on validating native language literacy, increasing parental involvement and providing conceptually correct science education. The project indicates that two-way dual language programs with a strong parent engagement component can help improve …

Increasing Pre-Service Teacher Science Test Success With A Tutorial Cd, William H. Robertson, Brian H. Giza, Stephanie S. Kuehne
William H. Robertson
Pre-service teachers often perform poorly on high-stakes state certification exams. Noting that there were a few particular items and concepts that seemed to be the most problematical, the authors developed a n HTML and flash-based tutorial CD that contained supplementary video and reference materials designed to assist the prospective teacher in preparing for the exam. Research subjects were studied for their preparation for self-regulated learning, as well as language environment, content background, and other factors. Data from scores on the teacher certification exam was correlated with CD use and demographics to identify the effectiveness of the CD tool as an …
