From The Civil Law Doctrine To The Reasonable Use Theory And From The Frontier Thesis To Community Action: Flood Control In Las Vegas, Nevada, 1905-1976, James L Scholl

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Flood control has long been a major problem for southwestern boom towns, and Las Vegas was no exception. From its birth in 1905 until the mid 1970s, the "Civil Law Doctrine" was the legal concept used by courts and residents to settle disputes over drainage problems; This paper will argue that the court's decision to change the guiding legal principle from the Civil Law Doctrine to the Reasonable Use Rule in Nevada ended the frontier viewpoint of individualism and replaced it with a new spirit of communal action. The legal revolution, along with a series of events tied to the …

Evaluation Of Rutting Resistance Of Coarse Graded Aggregate Asphaltic Concrete Mixes In Clark County, Nevada, Jerold Dewayne Stegeman Jan 1993

Evaluation Of Rutting Resistance Of Coarse Graded Aggregate Asphaltic Concrete Mixes In Clark County, Nevada, Jerold Dewayne Stegeman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing coarse aggregates in asphaltic concrete pavements for reducing rutting in Clark County, Nevada. Previous specifications used for asphaltic concrete mix designs in the Clark County area allowed for a wide range of aggregate gradations. The aggregate gradations in the asphaltic concrete mixes produced from these specifications tended to be on the finer side of the range. The pavements constructed based on the specifications were observed to be tender and susceptible to rutting. Paving projects were initiated which demonstrated that coarser aggregates in the asphalt mixes appeared to reduce …

Theoretical Study Of Interacting Low Dimensional Electron Systems, Jianzhong Zheng Jan 1993

Theoretical Study Of Interacting Low Dimensional Electron Systems, Jianzhong Zheng

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis addresses the question of a strongly interacting many-body problem: the Hubbard model on one- and two-dimensional lattices. The technique employed is the small-cluster method wherein the full many-body Hamiltonian for finite clusters with periodic boundary conditions (PBC's) is solved exactly. We first apply this technique to an extended one-dimensional chain and a two-dimensional square-lattice Hubbard model. We then construct a two-dimensional overlayer/substrate Hubbard model with first- and second-nearest-neighbor hopping, on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, and overlayer-site orbital energy. The ground-state properties are investigated and discussed in a many-body picture.

Analysis And Evaluation Of Three Promising Nuclear Waste Disposal Options, Venugopal Veeramachaneni Jan 1993

Analysis And Evaluation Of Three Promising Nuclear Waste Disposal Options, Venugopal Veeramachaneni

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Disposal of high level nuclear waste has evoked much interest among scientists, engineers and society at large. Numerous schemes have been proposed in this regard and a few have been analyzed thoroughly. However, these schemes have been found to be valid only under very specific environmental conditions, thus imposing constraints on the scheme of disposal. The option of retrievability imposed another constraint. In addition to accommodating the constraints, the disposal scheme must also comply with federal regulations (NRC 10 CFR PART 60, EPA 10 CFR PART 191, DOE 10 CFR PART 960). Due to the longevity of radionuclide toxicity, the …

Parametric Studies Of The Criticality Of Radioactive Spent Fuel Canisters In A Tuff Repository, Paige Robin Zielinski

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

With the availability of temporary nuclear waste storage in short supply, the federal government has invested in the research of permanent nuclear waste storage. One area of study is the criticality achieved by emplaced radioactive waste. In this study, a series of parametric analyses were completed to show the relative change in the value of k{dollar}\sb{\rm eff}{dollar} due to changes in canister composition, intrusion of water, and increased enrichment of the fuel. It was found that k{dollar}\sb{\rm eff}{dollar} was increased approximately 33% when the canister was completely flooded, however, the effect of tuff saturation was minimal. Also, different materials and …

Performance Evaluation Of Distributed Mutual Exclusion Algorithms, Kenneth B Been Jan 1993

Performance Evaluation Of Distributed Mutual Exclusion Algorithms, Kenneth B Been

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In any system in which concurrent processes share resources, mutual exclusion refers to the problem of guaranteeing the integrity of those resources by restricting their use to one process at a time. Due the complex nature of distributed systems, distributed mutual exclusion algorithms are often not amenable to theoretical analysis for performance or even correctness. Experimental inquiries are therefore warranted. This thesis investigates seven well known distributed mutual exclusion algorithms in detail, and uses computer simulation to evaluate the performance and applicability of these various algorithms. Toward this end, a realistic and general model for evaluating distributed algorithms is proposed. …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A method of tuning and calibration for a thermospray ion source on a benchtop quadrupole mass spectrometer using trifluoroacetic acid, pentafluoropropionic acid, heptafluorobutyric acid, polytetrahydrofuran-250, and polytetrahydrofuran-650 was proposed and evaluated. A 0.5% solution of the aliphatic acids showed good mass range coverage (163-641) in the negative mode, and no substantial memory effects. This mixture was evaluated over 45 days for fluctuations in the ion intensities and ratios. It remained stable within the expected thermospray reproducibility range, although the volatility of the trifluoroacetic acid made daily preparation of standard mixtures necessary. A similar solution of the polytetrahydrofurans was evaluated in …

Customer Compatibility In Restaurants, Yuh-Jye Cherng Jan 1993

Customer Compatibility In Restaurants, Yuh-Jye Cherng

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study explores the relative level of importance of customer-to-customer relationships in determining perceptions of good value in three types of restaurants. Overall, the findings indicate that customer behaviors and characteristics are not as important as the restaurant attributes investigated in the 1992 National Restaurant Association price-value study. However, the findings suggest that customer compatibility factors become more important as average check increases. Plus, some segments of the population perceive compatibility attributes as very important. Further investigation of compatibility management appears warranted if more competitive service environments are to be created.

Self-Stabilizing Deadlock Algorithms In Distributed Systems, Mitchell Elliott Flatebo Jan 1993

Self-Stabilizing Deadlock Algorithms In Distributed Systems, Mitchell Elliott Flatebo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A self-stabilizing system is a network of processors, which, when started from an arbitrary (and possibly illegal) initial state, always returns to a legal state in a finite number of steps. Self-stabilization is an evolving paradigm in fault-tolerant computing. This research will be the first time self-stabilization is used in the areas of deadlock detection and prevention. Traditional deadlock detection algorithms have a process initiate a probe. If that probe travels around the system and is received by the initiator, there is a cycle in the system, and deadlock is detected. In order to prevent deadlocks, algorithms usually rank nodes …

Formal Verification Of Distributed Deadlock Detection Algorithms, Brian Matt Johnston Jan 1993

Formal Verification Of Distributed Deadlock Detection Algorithms, Brian Matt Johnston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The problem of distributed deadlock detection has undergone extensive study. Formal verification of deadlock detection algorithms in distributed systems is an area of research that has largely been ignored. Instead, most proposed distributed deadlock detection algorithms have used informal or intuitive arguments, simulation or just neglect the entire aspect of verification of correctness; As a consequence, many of these algorithms have been shown incorrect. This research will abstract the notion of deadlock in terms of a temporal logic of actions and discuss the invariant and eventuality properties. The contributions of this research are the development of a distributed deadlock detection …

Exchange Of Oxygen And Hydrogen Isotopes Between Water And Water Vapor: Experimental Results, Michael Willem Slattery Jan 1993

Exchange Of Oxygen And Hydrogen Isotopes Between Water And Water Vapor: Experimental Results, Michael Willem Slattery

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The exchange of {dollar}\delta\sp{18}{dollar}O, {dollar}\delta{dollar}D, and tritium between water and water vapor was quantified using two methods. The first was quiescent equilibration of water samples having widely contrasting isotopic compositions, surface areas, volumes and temperatures, but similar salinities. Rates of exchange (k) depended on surface area and vapor pressure, while the end-point equilibrium was controlled by volume and isotopic composition of the exchanging waters. Values of k ranged from 0.09 to 0.19 cm/day at 22{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C and from 0.86 to 0.92 cm/day at 52{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C. The second method involved sparging 30 l of tritiated water (5,000 and 630,000 TU) with a constant …

Evaluating Daily Life Stressors In Children: Parent-Child Agreement, Julie Foutz Beasley Jan 1993

Evaluating Daily Life Stressors In Children: Parent-Child Agreement, Julie Foutz Beasley

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Although a large amount of research has been reported regarding the effects of stressful life events (i.e., divorce, severe illness) on children, only a small amount has addressed the measurement of daily life stressors (i.e., school, home, social activities). More specifically, the issue of parent-child agreement on childhood daily life stressors has been relatively unexamined. The present study examined 98 child, adolescent, and parent reports of childhood daily stress. Results indicated that parents underreport daily stress for their children. Specifically, fathers report lower levels of child stress, while mothers overestimate negative affectivity. Finally, younger children reported more daily stress, especially …
