On The Effect Of Dynamic Adjustment Of Recurrent Network Parameters On Learning, Stephen Lee Felgar Jan 1993

On The Effect Of Dynamic Adjustment Of Recurrent Network Parameters On Learning, Stephen Lee Felgar

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The thesis examines sequential learning in a neural network model derived by M. I. Jordan and J. L. Elman. In each of three experiments, different network parameters are systematically altered in a series of simulations. Each simulation measures learning ability for a specific network configuration. Simulation results are consolidated to summarize each parameter's significance in the learning process.

Effects Of Soil Moisture, Soil Carbonate And Organic Matter Content On Vapor Phase Sorption Of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Inverse Gas Chromatography, John Stephen Schmeltzer Jan 1993

Effects Of Soil Moisture, Soil Carbonate And Organic Matter Content On Vapor Phase Sorption Of Volatile Organic Compounds Using Inverse Gas Chromatography, John Stephen Schmeltzer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Sorption of VOCs from the vapor phase to soils is an important variable in predicting VOC contaminant movement in unsaturated soils. Experiments were performed which evaluated the effects of soil moisture, carbonate, and organic matter content on VOC sorption. Sorption measurements were performed for ten VOC compounds: trichloroethylene (TCE); 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA); benzene; toluene; ethylbenzene; chlorobenzene; heptane; and pentane. Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC) was the primary method used to measure VOC sorption in these experiments. Sorption for all the evaluated VOCs decreased with increasing moisture. Non-reversibility in the water characteristic curve of water had significant implications for the sorption of VOCs …

The Effect Of Surface Treatment And Rolling Direction On The Fatigue Behavior Of Grade One Commercially Pure Titanium, Shilong Tang Jan 1993

The Effect Of Surface Treatment And Rolling Direction On The Fatigue Behavior Of Grade One Commercially Pure Titanium, Shilong Tang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fully-reversed bending fatigue tests were conducted on both the as-received and finished grade one commercially pure titanium. Finishing is done by a process developed by TiMesh Inc., and known as TiMesh finishing. Results show that TiMesh finishing can not only increase material fatigue life at least by two times at the stress level of 25 Ksi, but also eliminate the anisotropic fatigue behavior observed in the as-received materials.

Effects Of Transmission Line Compensation And Power Factor Correction On Harmonic Propagation, Robert Douglas Kingston Jan 1993

Effects Of Transmission Line Compensation And Power Factor Correction On Harmonic Propagation, Robert Douglas Kingston

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis addresses power quality at two different levels, transmission and utilization. Harmonics injected at these levels can severely degrade the performance and long term reliability of the power system; At the utilization level, a typical industrial power system configuration that requires power factor capacitors and tuned harmonic filters for reactive power compensation and harmonic-control is analyzed. The resonant conditions for a given power factor correction or harmonic frequency are determined directly from the roots of a quadratic expression. This formulation allows a quick evaluation of the power factor range with excessive harmonic levels and reveals the effect of tuned …

Effects Of The Process Of Accreditation On Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Programs, John Rodney Poindexter Jan 1993

Effects Of The Process Of Accreditation On Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Programs, John Rodney Poindexter

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs first accredited the profession of athletic training in 1994. Athletic Training was the allied health field devoted to the prevention and care of athletic injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs' accreditation process on the curriculum, finances, enrollment, and faculty of National Athletic Trainers' Association approved undergraduate athletic training education programs; The effects of the process of accreditation were examined by a survey questionnaire completed by the program directors of the accredited institutions. The survey questionnaire requested …

The Effect Of Preoperative Intensive Care Orientation On Postoperative Anxiety Levels In Spouses Of Coronary Artery Bypass Clients, Eva Marie Lenhart Jan 1993

The Effect Of Preoperative Intensive Care Orientation On Postoperative Anxiety Levels In Spouses Of Coronary Artery Bypass Clients, Eva Marie Lenhart

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the effect of a preoperative intensive care unit (ICU) orientation program on the anxiety levels in spouses of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients. Therefore, this study tested if primary prevention reduces stress as proposed by Neuman by using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design. A convenience sample of 50 spouses of CABG patients were met the evening prior to surgery during preoparative teaching. Afterward, all subjects completed the Demographic Data Sheet (DDS) and the State-Trait Anxiety Scale (STAI). The experimental group was given the ICU orientation. The State anxiety scale was administered to both groups after the spouses …

The Effect Of Participation In A Sport And Recreation Program On Job And Community Satisfaction, Stacey Marie Gorney Jan 1993

The Effect Of Participation In A Sport And Recreation Program On Job And Community Satisfaction, Stacey Marie Gorney

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The implementation of employee recreation programs has declined, giving away to programs which put more emphasis on health and fitness. Shinew & Crossley (1989) suggested that employee recreation programs may contain benefits comparable to those of employee health promotion programs. Research that has examined employee recreation programs and their benefits have been limited. The present study investigated employee participation (N = 122) in a community-sponsored employee recreation program named the Corporate Challenge. This study examined the effects of employee participation in the Corporate Challenge on employee job satisfaction, overall community satisfaction, and an employee's overall feelings of community life importance. …

The Effect Of Fly Ash On Clay, Bahman Purkhosrow Jan 1993

The Effect Of Fly Ash On Clay, Bahman Purkhosrow

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Preliminary studies to determine the effect of mixing fly ash with regional swelling of clayey soils indicated these mixtures were superior in certain engineering properties. Mixtures of clay soil, and fly ash at 10, 20, 30, and 40 percent exhibited reduced plasticity and swelling characteristics while the unconfined compression strength of the mixture increased as the percentage of fly ash increased. Based upon the laboratory test results, the possibility of stabilizing swelling soils by using fly ash in structural fills should be practical. The use of fly ash to reduce high plasticity and swelling in soils may prove to be …
