A Room, Ned Behnke Jan 1976

A Room, Ned Behnke

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to make a series of heavy paintings on the concept of limited space using oil on canvas. The concept of "limited space" can be best illustrated in a series of rooms. I intend to accompany these with a poetic diary which will describe my techniques and will present the ideas which I included in the painting such as reflection in color. The "diary" will not be chronological, but related in the order of ideas. I will present the ideas which I have incorporated into the painting of the room especially those regarding how I …

Control System For Hydraulic Hybrid Propulsion System, Vratislav Michal Jan 1976

Control System For Hydraulic Hybrid Propulsion System, Vratislav Michal

Theses

A control system for a Hydraulic Hybrid Propulsion System (HHPS) is proposed and specified. Performance of the control system is evaluated by means of digital computer simulation of the total propulsion system. In order to accomplish this, analytical models of HHPS components are developed. The simulation consists of a city bus negotiating a typical driving cycle developed for this purpose on the basis of actual city bus cycle data. Performance of the control system is found to be satisfactory in all phases of driving cycle with the exception of transition from acceleration to cruise.

Some Reactions Of 2-Chloroethanesulfonyl Chloride, Paul Zielinski Jan 1976

Some Reactions Of 2-Chloroethanesulfonyl Chloride, Paul Zielinski

Theses

PART 1: THE FORMATION OF 2-METHYLAMIN0-N-0CTADECYLETHAHESULF0NAMIDE FROM 2-CHLOROETHANESULFONYL CHLORIDE. 2-Chloroethanesulfonyl chloride (2) was reacted with octadecylamine (3) in the presence of triethylamine to give N-octadecylethcnesulfonamide (4), which was reacted with methylamine to give 2-methylamino-N-octadecylethanesulfonamide (1). The first reaction involves formation of the sulfonamide and dehydrohalogenation. The second reaction is a Michael addition. The formation of 1 is favored in a polg.r, protic medium. An aprotic, less polar medium produces an unwanted di-Michael adduct CH3N(CH2CH2S02NHCl8H37)2 (8), and polymer. The intramolecular hydrogen bonded structure of 1 is discussed. PART 2: THE FORMATION OF ETHYL ETHENESULFONATE FROM 2-CHLOROETHANESULFONYL CHLORIDE OR ETHENESULFONYL CHLORIDE; A …

An Approach To Tone Reproduction For Converting Transparencies To Reflection Prints, Mark Mccormick-Goodhart, Andrew Macica Jan 1976

An Approach To Tone Reproduction For Converting Transparencies To Reflection Prints, Mark Mccormick-Goodhart, Andrew Macica

Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to study the useful criteria for converting transparencies to reflection prints, and examine the unavoidable departures from the criteria. A single useful criterion was found; that the relative brightness of the reproduction match those of the original. One significant compromise appeared to be in the shadow reproduction in low maximum density reflection prints. It was found that like reflection prints, transparencies do not typically reach relative brightnesses as low as zero. Thus, only a relatively small departure from the 1:1 criterion was likely . Flare in the camera system and viewing conditions limits the …

Distinguishable Density Levels In Image Recording Of Earth Resources Satellite Data, Steven Beiser Jan 1976

Distinguishable Density Levels In Image Recording Of Earth Resources Satellite Data, Steven Beiser

Theses

The Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) system produces a large volume of images of the Earth, with exposed film as the final output. These Images are presented to the user in pictorial form for interpretation and analysis. Specifications for this output film include MTF requirements, development method requirements, geometric tolerance and the number of DDL's (distinguishable density levels). Given the specification of 64 levels of gray, with a minimum density range of 2.0, the following investigation is warranted. Using theoretical calculations, granularity will be determined at different density levels. Assuming that Selwyn's Law is valid for the range of apertures …

Performance Analysis Of A Black Liquid Solar Collector, Jackson Trentelman Jan 1976

Performance Analysis Of A Black Liquid Solar Collector, Jackson Trentelman

Theses

The performance of a black liquid, sheet flow solar collector has been investigated both analytically and experimentally. In addition, its performance has been compared to that of a baseline collector of the tube and fin design. The black liquid solar collector was predicted to exhibit an instantaneous efficiency improvement of 10-15% over a well designed tube and fin collector. This result was confirmed experimentally. Long term efficiency calculations indicate similar performance improvements over long term use. The major contribution to improved efficiency was found to be the direct absorption process whereby a) the collector efficiency, F’, is unity and b) …

Application Of The Finite Element Method To The Solution Of Maximum Fillet Stresses In Loaded Projections, Victor Biller Jan 1976

Application Of The Finite Element Method To The Solution Of Maximum Fillet Stresses In Loaded Projections, Victor Biller

Theses

This thesis analyzes a geometric configuration under a loaded condition and establishes location and magnitude of the maximum fillet stress by the use of the Finite Element Method. Results are compared to Heywood's published study.
