Observer Recognition Of Targets Imbedded In Noise, Brian Nastvogel Jun 1976

Observer Recognition Of Targets Imbedded In Noise, Brian Nastvogel

Theses

Noise in a photographic system is generally non-additive. As of today there is no model to explain a non-additive noise system. That best model that we have of the photographic system is in terms of additive noise systems.

By adding a noise effect to a signal an additive noise effect can be obtained. What was investigated in this thesis was what effect the adding of noise in a photographic system plays in an observers ability to recognize a signal that is present in the noise.

By photographing a noise field and adding it to a signal target an additive noise …

Redesign Of The Rms Granularity Meter, Robert Bathgate, Filippo Ferrauto Jun 1976

Redesign Of The Rms Granularity Meter, Robert Bathgate, Filippo Ferrauto

Theses

A device for measuring RMS granularity of uniformly exposed and uniformly processed photographic material was built. This paper deals with the construction of the major components of the system. The components constructed were the lamp mount, lamp housing, current regulated ripple free power supply for the lamp, the replacement of the motor drive system for the sample stage with a synchronous motor, and the construction of the photo detection system. All these components were mounted on a triangular optical bench around an existing symetrical design microdensitometer with rotating sample stage.

Interimage Effects In Various Subtractive Color Materials, Philip Wychorski Jun 1976

Interimage Effects In Various Subtractive Color Materials, Philip Wychorski

Theses

In three color photographic processes the cyan dye image is usually controlled by the red sensitive emulsion, the magenta dye image by the green sensitive layer, and the yellow dye image by the blue sensitive layer. Due to the proximity of these three layers in a color film interactions among the images are found to occur. It has been found that when the images are combined into a three color picture they do not have the same characteristics as they would have if they occurred separately. The density produced in each layer depends not only on the amount of exposure …

Theses

Poly (ethylene oxide) is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It is one of the classes of synthetic water soluble resins which are commercially available. The properties of poly (ethylene oxide) as a desensitizer in the fountain solution were studied. The solution of this resin was compared to gum arabic solution. The investigation included the study of the physical properties of the solutions at different concentrations as well as press performance. Comparisons were made as to wettability, viscosity, surface tension, the ability to clean the plate, the resistance to scum, printing sharpness, resolution, and the plate-press characteristic curve. The experiments were …

Image Intensification By A Low Level Light Exposure Before, During, And After An Image Exposure, Robert Rippstein Jun 1976

Image Intensification By A Low Level Light Exposure Before, During, And After An Image Exposure, Robert Rippstein

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to study the effects on the shape and position of the characteristic curve due to a low level uniform exposure to white light. This was accomplished using a special camera which produced an image of a neutral density -wedge on a film strip. One half of this image was covered while the other half was uniformly exposed to a low level light exposure. In some cases the low level exposure was first applied to half of the film strip with the image exposure occurring second. The density differences between the two halves of the …

The Influence Of Test Colors On The Color Rendering Index Maximization In A Three Component Spectral Power Distribution, Gregory Miller Jun 1976

The Influence Of Test Colors On The Color Rendering Index Maximization In A Three Component Spectral Power Distribution, Gregory Miller

Theses

This thesis describes the technique of principle component analysis as applied to determining if a combination of three characteristic vectors would account for an underlying structure in the eight color test objects specified by the CIE for calculation of the color rendering index (CRI). Anticipated was that three vectors would account for 100 % of the variance in the eight test objects; however it was determined that three vectors account for only 96 % of the variance. Since the analysis of the reflectance functions showed no dependence within the functions a 3^3 factorial experiment was conducted. Its purpose was to …

Reaction Kinetics For The Synthesis Of Benzyl Benzoate From Benzyl Chloride And The Triethylamine Salt Of Benzoic Acid, Michael A. Kolakowski May 1976

Reaction Kinetics For The Synthesis Of Benzyl Benzoate From Benzyl Chloride And The Triethylamine Salt Of Benzoic Acid, Michael A. Kolakowski

Theses

The reaction kinetics for the synthesis of benzyl benzoate from benzyl chloride and the triethylamine salt of benzoic acid has been studied over the temperature range of 70-105°C and a mole ratio of benzyl chloride to triethylamine of 0.5 - 10.0.

A reaction mechanism which is consistent with the experimental data has been derived. The experimental data was analyzed by means of the integral method of analysis. The temperature dependency of the reaction was determined from Arrhenius' Law and the activation energy was calculated to be 15,064 cal/g-mole. An empirical equation which explains the effects of the reactant mole ratio …

The Recovery Of Methanol From The Mother Liquor Of A Pharmaceutical Active Ingredient, Richard Lawrence Eichholtz May 1976

The Recovery Of Methanol From The Mother Liquor Of A Pharmaceutical Active Ingredient, Richard Lawrence Eichholtz

Theses

The company has been sending to the sewer the filtrate from one of our chemical processes. This filtrate contains 63 vol. % methanol. The recovery of this methanol would reduce the amount of purchased methanol. The recovery would also reduce the Biological Oxygen Demand of the plant effluent. In the near future the local sewer authority will be billing the company for BOD.

The goal of the recovery process is to obtain methanol of satisfactory quality for reuse in the process from which it came. A literature search and a laboratory study verified the non-ideality of the system. Preliminary calculations …

Prediction And Correlation Of The Salt-Effect In Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium, Enrique M. Bekerman May 1976

Prediction And Correlation Of The Salt-Effect In Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium, Enrique M. Bekerman

Theses

The feasibility of developing a method of correlation and prediction, for mixtures of two solvents containing a dissolved salt has been studied. The procedure consisted of arriving at the interaction parameters for the three binary systems (solvent 1-solvent 2, solvent 1-salt, solvent 2-salt) and using these to calculate the ternary results. Attempts to generate interaction parameters for the solvent-salt binaries by means of the Wilson equation were unsuccessful, whereas, use of the NRTL equation resulted in a very good fit of the binary data.

In correlating the ternary results, it became necessary to redefine the liquid phase mole fractions and …

Subcontracting By The Petrochemical Engineer-Constructor, Michael Peter Skurla May 1976

Subcontracting By The Petrochemical Engineer-Constructor, Michael Peter Skurla

Theses

An analysis has been made of the methods used by a Petrochemical Engineer-Constructor, who has national labor agreements, in deciding if the construction phase of a project should be done by a subcontract method of construction or be accomplished on a direct hire basis. The petrochemical complex under discussion is considered to be in the $75 million range for the total installed cost including design, engineering, procurement, and construction.

The influence of subcontracting portions of the construction phase by the Engineer-Constructor is reviewed with its impact on: the client; project schedule and cost; local and national labor relations, because of …

The Effects Of Angularity On The Compaction And Shear Strength Of A Cohesionless Material, Richard Edward Swiderski May 1976

The Effects Of Angularity On The Compaction And Shear Strength Of A Cohesionless Material, Richard Edward Swiderski

Theses

Several physical methods are described for the practical measurement and rating of angularity (shape) of cohesionless soil particles. Angularity is determined by utilizing the fundamental property of a sphere: a sphere has the smallest contact surface area of any shape for a given volume. Therefore, any other shape will exhibit a greater contact surface area and consequently will have a greater frictional resistance which is a function of its degree of angularity.

The effects of angularity on the physical behavior (e.g. strength) of cohesionless soils was investigated at various relative compaction densities. For this purpose a combined compaction and direct …

Non-Standard Workweek Scheduling Technique Selection, John Alexander Oak May 1976

Non-Standard Workweek Scheduling Technique Selection, John Alexander Oak

Theses

This thesis presents a description of non-standard work scheduling techniques and a comparison method which enables decision-makers to differentiate between available work-scheduling alternatives with the purpose in mind of selecting the most appropriate and suitable arrangement. The method developed calls for the decision-maker to follow a five-step sequential process to obtain final results. The ingredients necessary to achieve such final results are obtained in a manner similar to that demanded by decision-making-under-uncertainty conditions commonly followed in actual industrial settings.

Since the primary objective of business management is the achievement of a profit through the manipulation of available resources, initial sections …

Design And Construction Of An Edge Exposure Apparatus, Michael Benson May 1976

Design And Construction Of An Edge Exposure Apparatus, Michael Benson

Theses

A means of producing photographic edges using visible radiation is often a requirement for evaluating some of the image characteristics of a photographic emulsion. The method of producing edges described uses a high quality razor blade for the knife edge held at a small angle to the film plane. The instrument is detailed and elaborates on the major features of the constructed apparatus. These features are a vacuum surface to insure film flattness; the knife edge held by a jaw-clamp assembly that pivots to allow for contrast control of the image; and exposure through a tungston-halogen lamp and an electronic …

Design, Construction, And Testing Of Sequentially Flashing Led Array To Study Angular Camera Motion In Hand Held Camera Systems, Randall Hube May 1976

Design, Construction, And Testing Of Sequentially Flashing Led Array To Study Angular Camera Motion In Hand Held Camera Systems, Randall Hube

Theses

This project deals with the construction of a device to determine the actual angular motion in a hand held camera system caused only by the holder. An array of LEDs (8x8) is flashed so that one LED flashes at a time in sequence. This sequence is photographed by a system suffering from motion effects and this is compared with the image of the array when no motion effects are present. The displacements of each "blip" with respect to time is used to determine the motion of the camera system.

An Investigation Of The Electrooptical Properties Of A Dipole Suspension Of Iodoquinine Sulfate, Michael Smalter, Roy Dohlen May 1976

An Investigation Of The Electrooptical Properties Of A Dipole Suspension Of Iodoquinine Sulfate, Michael Smalter, Roy Dohlen

Theses

The objective of this thesis is to investigate the electrooptical properties of a dipole suspension. A dipole suspension consists of needle-like crystals which, in the presence of an electric field, orient themselves parallel to it. If the dipoles align themselves parallel to incident light, the suspension will transmit the light. If no electric field is present, the dipoles are in a random state, and little light is transmitted. The projected area of the dipoles is smaller when they are in the aligned state. Commercially, a dipole suspension is available from Marks Polarized Corporation as the product Varad. This thesis will …
