The Solo Style Of Jazz Clarinetist Johnny Dodds: 1923 - 1938, Patricia A. Martin Jan 2003

The Solo Style Of Jazz Clarinetist Johnny Dodds: 1923 - 1938, Patricia A. Martin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to explore the personality, background, influence and playing style of Johnny Dodds (1892-1940), a New Orleans jazz clarinetist. Jazz is an art form that has been passed down aurally for over a hundred years. Although the development of jazz and the performers who played it have been the subject for numerous jazz historians, there are still scant resources available for a musician to learn jazz clarinet style. The ease with which a musician can emulate an early jazz clarinetist depends on the amount of time devoted to listening and emulating whatever recordings are available. …

Aerenchyma - a specialized tissue with abundant, interconnected gas spaces - facilitates oxygen transport from shoots to roots in many emergent wetland plants. The importance of oxygen transport to root elongation and aerenchyma development in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings was demonstrated in this investigation. Germinated seeds of Lemont (a commercial cultivar) and red rice (an agricultural weed) were positioned at 4.5, 2.5, or 1.0 cm below the surface of aerated or hypoxic water to control the duration of leaf submergence and the availability of oxygen. Primary root and leaf lengths were measured daily. Aerenchyma was compared among emergent and …

Southern Opposition To Civil Rights In The United States Senate: A Tactical And Ideological Analysis, 1938-1965, Keith M. Finley Jan 2003

Southern Opposition To Civil Rights In The United States Senate: A Tactical And Ideological Analysis, 1938-1965, Keith M. Finley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Contrary to many historical accounts that depict white resistance to civil rights legislation in the United States Senate as relying exclusively on filibusters and overt racism, southern senators adopted a more moderate approach in the late 1930s when they realized that civil rights activism would continue until Jim Crow collapsed. Following strategic delay, a tactical model that enabled them to thwart civil rights advances for decades, they granted minor concessions on bills only tangentially related to civil rights and emasculated more substantive measures, rather than always utilizing the filibuster. The level of northern support for a given civil rights proposal …

Improved Bottomhole Pressure Control For Underbalanced Drilling Operations, Carlos Perez-Tellez Jan 2003

Improved Bottomhole Pressure Control For Underbalanced Drilling Operations, Carlos Perez-Tellez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Maintaining underbalanced conditions from the beginning to the end of the drilling process is necessary to guarantee the success of jointed-pipe underbalanced drilling (UBD) operations by avoiding formation damage and potential hazardous drilling problems such as lost circulation and differential sticking. However, maintaining these conditions is an unmet challenge that continues motivating not only research but also technological developments. This research proposes an UBD flow control procedure, which represents an economical method for maintaining continuous underbalanced conditions and, therefore, to increase well productivity by preventing formation damage. It is applicable to wells that can flow without artificial lift and within …

Investigation Of Bond Slip Between Concrete And Steel Reinforcement Under Dynamic Loading Conditions, John Henry Weathersby Jan 2003

Investigation Of Bond Slip Between Concrete And Steel Reinforcement Under Dynamic Loading Conditions, John Henry Weathersby

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Structural failures during recent earthquakes and terrorist attacks have demonstrated shortcomings in the design procedures for reinforced concrete structures. Earlier research has demonstrated that a major limitation of the Finite Element (FE) modeling of the response of reinforced concrete is the accurate modeling of the interaction of the concrete with the steel reinforcement. Presently, there are insufficient data on the dynamic nonlinear interaction between the concrete material and the steel reinforcement to develop a numerical model of this interaction. The primary objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the dynamic interaction (bond slip) of reinforcement with concrete and gain …

Role Of Endothelin-1 In The Gastrointestinal Tract Of Horses In Health And Disease, Ramaswamy Monickarasi Chidambaram

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Gastrointestinal tract disease is the leading natural cause of death in horses and horses with ischemic intestinal disease have the greatest mortality. We hypothesized there is basal synthesis of endothelin-1 (ET-1) in the intestinal tract of healthy horses that is likely involved in regulating vasomotor tone, secretion and motility and that ET-1 synthesis increases with gastrointestinal tract disease, which may be involved in the pathophysiology of these disorders. Plasma ET-like immunoreactivity was increased in horses with naturally-acquired gastrointestinal disease, compared with normal horses; values were greatest in horses with large intestinal strangulation obstruction, enterocolitis and peritonitis. There was an association …

Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Bulk Intermetallic And Heteroepitaxially Grown Surface Alloys, Orhan Kizilkaya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It has been well documented that the surfaces of solids may differ from their bulk counterpart. The symmetry that a bulk possesses is broken at the surface. Due to this broken symmetry in the reduced dimension of the surface, the energetic of the surface also differs from the bulk counterpart. Reconstruction, charge redistribution, and surface alloying are phenomena that minimize the surface free energy. Surface properties of scientifically and technologically important bimetallic systems are the main focus of this dissertation. Specifically, surfaces of bulk alloy or heteroepitaxially grown metal-on-metal systems have been investigated primarily with two indispensable surface techniques, scanning …

The Relationship Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome And Insomnia: Implications For Treatment, Danae L. Drab

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a sleep-disordered breathing condition that causes disrupted sleep. Although OSAS is most often associated with daytime hypersomnolence, a number of OSAS patients complain of insomnia, i.e., disorders of initiating or maintaining sleep. If the insomnia in patients with OSAS is secondary to the medical condition, then it would be expected to abate with the successful treatment of OSAS. If, however, the insomnia is primarily of a psychological nature, thus considered primary or psychophysiological insomnia, little to no change in insomnia symptoms would be expected after the treatment of OSAS. The present study examined the …
