Uas Safety Zones: A Model For Addressing Increased Air Traffic Controller Workload, Pratik Jadhav, Damon Lercel, Sarah Hubbard May 2021

Uas Safety Zones: A Model For Addressing Increased Air Traffic Controller Workload, Pratik Jadhav, Damon Lercel, Sarah Hubbard

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

This paper presents a model to address the increased workload for air traffic controllers (ATC) due to the integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the airport ecosystem. The FAA established small UAS operational regulations in 2016. Already, UAS pilots comprise over 20% of the total pilot population, and UAS account for 89% of the total aircraft registrations. Given current FAA resource constraints and the forecast growth of air traffic, innovative safety management solutions are required to address the increase in controller workload and the associated safety risks. This research presents one perspective regarding the impact of UAS operations on …

The State And Cannabis : What Is Success? A Comparative Analysis Of Cannabis Policy In The United States Of America, Uruguay, And Canada, Gideon C. Cunningham

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Globally, the policies that states engage in concerning the cultivation, production, distribution, and sale of recreational cannabis in the 21st century is changing rapidly. Three countries have now legalized, regulated, and implemented recreational cannabis frameworks, albeit in starkly different ways. These countries are The United States of America, Uruguay, and Canada. This research identifies the contradictory nature of cannabis policy goals and compares the similarities and differences of each countries’ recreational cannabis framework. It proposes a theory of understanding the contradictory nature of creating cannabis policies post-legalization and presents a framework from which to analyze the success of individual cannabis …

Exploitation And Domination: A Marxist Analysis Of The Impact Of Class Structure On State Terrorism, Joseph J. Hammons

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

This study qualitatively examines the impact of three socio-economic inequalities on state terrorism: (1) income inequality; (2) unequal collective labor rights; and (3) land inequality. It proposes a theory of class structure and state terrorism based on the Marxist theory of exploitation and domination and uses Marxist class analysis in the comparison of two case studies, Brazil (1985-1990) and the Philippines (1986-1992), to determine which of the three socio-economic inequalities is most likely to lead to class struggle that will prompt the state to respond with terrorism. Findings from this study indicate that issues concerning land inequality may be a …

Anthrax Event Detection: Analysis Of Public Opinion Using Twitter During Anthrax Scares, The Mueller Investigation, And North Korean Threats, Michele E. Miller

When people allow fear to drive their decision making, they often make decisions that do more harm than good. Examples of this include stocking up on ciprofloxacin, flooding doctors’ offices and buying black market antibiotics after the anthrax attacks of 2001. Therefore, it is important to be able to address what people are saying when another anthrax attack occurs. Supervised and unsupervised machine learning methodologies can be utilized to detect an event, classify the tweets by event, and to determine the main topics of discussion. Over the period of data collection, twenty events were detected. Three of these events concerned …

An Approach To Cluster And Benchmark Regional Emergency Medical Service Agencies, Swetha Kondapalli Jan 2020

An Approach To Cluster And Benchmark Regional Emergency Medical Service Agencies, Swetha Kondapalli

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers are the first responders for an injured patient on the field. Their assessment of patient injuries and determination of an appropriate hospital play a critical role in patient outcomes. A majority of states in the US have established a state-level governing body (e.g., EMS Division) that is responsible for developing and maintaining a robust EMS system throughout the state. Such divisions develop standards, accredit EMS agencies, oversee the trauma system, and support new initiatives through grants and training. But to do so, these divisions require data to enable them to first understand the similarities between …

As a result of a deterrence and incapacitation focused criminal justice system in the United States, reentry programming has become integral to both reduce criminal justice spending and mass incarceration. Reentry programming assists those released from prison with reintegration into society to prevent recidivism and allow the returning citizen to become a productive member of society. This study evaluated one such reentry program in Montgomery County Ohio. The Reentry Career Alliance Academy (RCAA) is a career focused work readiness curriculum that also includes workshops with community stakeholders. Evaluation was completed through paired T Test analysis in pre- and post-questionnaire responses. …

Quantifying Contributions To The Variance Of Permeability And Porosity Within The Western Belt Sandstones Of The Cypress Formation, Illinois Basin, Nathaniel Frederick Dulaney Jan 2020

Quantifying Contributions To The Variance Of Permeability And Porosity Within The Western Belt Sandstones Of The Cypress Formation, Illinois Basin, Nathaniel Frederick Dulaney

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

One of the strategies for reducing the emission of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) and mitigating its accumulation into the Earth’s atmosphere is geologic sequestration (GSCO2). This process might be paired with enhanced oil recovery (EOR) within depleted oil reservoirs to provide an economic incentive for GSCO2. Heterogeneity within reservoirs (e.g. spatial differences in entry pressure, permeability, and porosity) can exert significant influence on the dynamics of fluid flow during EOR and GSCO2, and thus on the ultimate success of GSCO2-EOR. The Western Belt sandstones of the Cypress Formation in the Illinois Basin are candidate reservoirs for GSCO2-EOR. Heterogeneity …

A Graphene/Rf Gas Sensor, Kathleen Louise Brockdorf

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Toxic chemicals have been used as chemical warfare agents since ancient times, but World War 1 saw the beginning of modern chemical proliferation. There are many methods of detecting these agents, but the combination of high sensitivity, specificity, fast response, and small form factor is difficult to achieve. More recently, graphene has been identified as a possible sensing material for ammonia and other substances. This research documents a novel method of using graphene as a chemical sensor, utilizing a radio-frequency approach to sensing. This approach utilizes all available information from the material, such as permittivity and conductivity, instead of simply …

A Model To Optimize Major Trauma Network Considering Patient Safety, Monit D. Vaishnav Jan 2019

A Model To Optimize Major Trauma Network Considering Patient Safety, Monit D. Vaishnav

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Trauma is any physical injury that has the potential to cause prolonged disability and death if the appropriate level of care is not administered in a timely fashion. Existing approaches in the literature and by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) to optimize the network of trauma centers are limiting. To address this challenge, we introduce the Trauma Network Design Problem, a bi-objective mathematical model that aims at determining the optimal trauma network by minimizing the weighted sum of mistriages. We use the trauma network data from 2012 for the state of Ohio to illustrate the use of our approach …
