Land-Use Governance And Indigenous Engagement In Arctic Alaska And Norway: Successes, Current Gaps, And Paths Forward, Ningning Sun
Land-Use Governance And Indigenous Engagement In Arctic Alaska And Norway: Successes, Current Gaps, And Paths Forward, Ningning Sun
Environmental Studies Senior Theses
This study aims to analyze the land use governance structures and the role of Indigenous engagement in Alaska and Norway using a comparative approach, with special focus on successful practices, current gaps, and paths forward to achieve equitable governance. Extractive land uses, such as oil and gas extraction and the construction of wind farms, have mixed impacts on Indigenous communities and lead to social and legal issues such as land use conflict and environmental injustice. Previous research has studied land use governance in Arctic countries with regard to Indigenous Peoples, yet there is a lack of literature that spans Alaska …

Rebuilding Trust In A Divided Community: An Integrated Approach, Shaphan Roberts
Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal
Metropolitan cities face a myriad of social challenges, including increased crime, homelessness, and declining business vitality. These issues are interrelated, demanding solutions that are multifaceted and systemic. Solutions backstopped by law enforcement are needed to foster an environment conducive to business growth, job creation, and reducing homelessness. However, a widespread lack of trust in local law enforcement complicates addressing these challenges, highlighting the importance of community engagement and cooperation for effective policing and crime prevention. A comprehensive approach is necessary to address these social challenges. Integrating the stakeholder and sectors models with insights from literature focusing on community policing, economic …

Commercial Property Vacancies In American Cities, Ngan Nguyen Kim Dinh
Commercial Property Vacancies In American Cities, Ngan Nguyen Kim Dinh
University Honors Theses
This paper examines the alarming impacts of the vacancy phenomenon on commercial properties across American during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in remote work encourages people to work from home more frequently. This does not only lessen employees’ foot traffic to offices, but also disconnects the engagement of consumers and visitors to public areas, such as malls, stores, and other amenities. Many commercial properties have closed, shrunk their operating spaces, or reallocated for safety and security reasons. Reduction in occupancy rate among mentioned properties influences negatively on business owners, their associated partners, residents of the impacted areas, and …

Exploring How Sino-Business Culture Informs United States Business Negotiation Practice, Chase Peterson
Exploring How Sino-Business Culture Informs United States Business Negotiation Practice, Chase Peterson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Numerous scholarly works have explored the intricacies of negotiating with China. This paper aims to add value to previous research by providing insights deduced from cross-cultural communication with individuals from the People's Republic of China (PRC), while emphasizing the advantages of adaptation of Chinese business culture by U.S. negotiators. The United States Institute of Peace observed several biases among U.S. negotiators including a tendency to accept initial solutions prematurely, as well as a lack of understanding regarding counterparts' objectives and contextual circumstances (Quinney 2002). The strengths of Chinese business culture help remedy these tendencies and inform Western negotiators how different …

Korean Newspapers And The “Irish Problem”: Japanese Censorship In Colonial Korea, 1920-1930, Jaehyun Kim
Korean Newspapers And The “Irish Problem”: Japanese Censorship In Colonial Korea, 1920-1930, Jaehyun Kim
Student Work
Jaehyun Kim’s thesis, “Korean Newspapers and the ‘Irish Problem’: Japanese Censorship in Colonial Korea, 1920-1930,” touches upon a subject that scholars of colonial Korea have given insufficient attention to. Kim asks why there featured so many colonial Korean run newspaper articles on the Irish Independent movement in the 1920s and 1930s when the Japanese colonial government actively censored Korean newspapers. Indeed, in the wake of the March First Independent Movement, the colonial authorities shifted its harsh military rule to a more conciliatory cultural policy, allowing Koreans to vent their nationalistic sentiments within the confines of state control. However, the level …

"Extraordinary" Times Call For "Compelling" Measures: Reforming The First Step Act's Compassionate Release Mechanism For Noncitizen Detainees, Laura Jimenez Garcia
Georgia Law Review
Year after year, America’s carceral state reaches new and more concerning heights. In this era of mass incarceration and criminalization of immigration status, imprisonment costs have skyrocketed, and the quality of life in prisons has plummeted. In response, Congress passed the First Step Act in 2018, which reformed federal sentencing practices. The First Step Act allows federal criminal defendants to request compassionate release, either for several enumerated reasons or for “extraordinary and compelling” circumstances. In the Federal Sentencing Commission’s new Sentencing Guidelines, federal courts have the discretion to define what circumstances fit under the catch-all provision defining “extraordinary and compelling” …
Are Women The Silver Bullet? Understanding Women’S Perceptions Of Gun Reform And Red Flag Laws In The United States, Emmeline Farwell
Are Women The Silver Bullet? Understanding Women’S Perceptions Of Gun Reform And Red Flag Laws In The United States, Emmeline Farwell
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines women’s perceptions of gun reform policies and how they can be used as a measure to predict how women could potentially view specific gun reform policies like red flag laws. Specific policies like the assault weapons ban and red flag laws are becoming increasingly common, practical measures to reduce gun violence, but little academic research has been done on them. Using data from the 2022 Congressional Election Survey conducted by the University of Texas at Austin University, I use several linear regressions to ascertain how one’s gender affects feelings or support for gun reform generally and for …

Study Of Factors Influencing Traffic Violations In Jakarta: Perspective Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior (Tpb) In The Implementation Of Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (Etle), Khobat Dewa Ruci, Sutanto Soehodho, R. Jachrizal Sumabrata
Smart City
Transportation safety in Indonesia reflects its culture and modernity, but the high rate of traffic accidents indicates significant challenges. Data from IRSMS and Polda Metro Jaya reveal an increase in accidents and traffic violations, reinforcing the need for effective law enforcement. The implementation of ETLE, supported by Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation and Law No. 19 of 2016 on Electronic Information and Transactions, is a strategic effort to improve law enforcement. However, its effectiveness in Jakarta context still requires in-depth evaluation. This thesis focuses on the psychological factors in the use of ETLE using the …
Actions Speak Louder Than Words: The Supreme Court Of Georgia Textualizes “Action” In The Georgia Constitution, Abigail C. Letts
Actions Speak Louder Than Words: The Supreme Court Of Georgia Textualizes “Action” In The Georgia Constitution, Abigail C. Letts
Mercer Law Review
It comes as no surprise to those tuned into Georgia jurisprudence—textualism has taken root in the Supreme Court of Georgia. Since a series of holdings in the late twenty-tens including Olevik v. State, Georgia courts have produced a steady stream of decisions committed to pointing legal interpretation back to the intent of the framers. At first glance, the court’s proclamation in State v. SASS Group, LLC that “action” as it is used in Article I, Section II, Paragraph V(b) of the Georgia Constitution refers to an entire lawsuit appears simply to be another instance of the court’s staunch commitment …

Corner Revolution: Beyond “Skynet”, Brightening Grey Space And Building Security, Caimin Shen
Masters Theses
The existence of surveillance areas restricts many bad behaviors, but why do we still feel vague anxiety and uneasiness when walking through street corners and promenades in a city protected by a network of cameras? As China has implemented grid management of cities through the establishment of the “Skynet”—— a system that uses facial recognition and surveillance cameras to strengthen public safety, the crime rate has dropped significantly. But public safety doesn’t just mean fewer criminal activities. Reducing people’s perceived insecurity and anxiety has become a new challenge in China today. “Corner Revolution” explores the transformative power of architectural design …
Criminal Legal Reform In New Hampshire: One Law Professor's Activism, Albert E. Scherr
Criminal Legal Reform In New Hampshire: One Law Professor's Activism, Albert E. Scherr
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Criminal legal reform is a perpetual work in progress. The system itself is, at best, maddeningly imperfect. It too often fails to produce anything close to justice. Structural problems afflict the system in a way that incarcerates too many people, particularly people of color. For example, over the last thirty years, the Innocence Project has demonstrated imperfections in the system caused by faulty eyewitness identification procedures by ineffective assistance of counsel, by prosecutorial misconduct, by shoddy forensic practices and by police behavior that produced false confessions.
That the United States has well over fifty-one independent criminal legal systems frustrates efforts …

Nextgen Licensure & Accreditation, Nachman N. Gutowski
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
The Bar Exam is changing. The National Conference of Bar Examiners is pushing full steam ahead with a replacement for the current elements that make up the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE). This new exam, called the NextGen Bar Exam (NextGen), is scheduled to launch in Summer 2026. Current American Bar Association (ABA) accreditation standards do not consider the coming changes. A full picture of what the adjustments will look like is hazy and very much in the trial stages still. These shifts impact current law students, the legal education practices of law schools, and accreditation standards. There is a near-universal …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this paper, we introduce a novel automated and high-precision acoustic emission (AE) monitoring algorithm and the software SIMORGH, which is suitable for structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil structures. Initially developed for laboratory-scale hydraulic fracture monitoring, this core software has been effectively scaled up to meter-level applications and is compatible with heterogeneous media such as concrete. It is designed to work with various standard data formats and is handles both trigger-based and continuous data. We present initial results from implementing this software in the AE monitoring of two 4.88-meter-long concrete beams in a laboratory setting, comparing it with manually …

Online Communities And Offline Criminal Justice: The Digital Fallout Of Major Criminal Incidents, Jacqueline M. Scott
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
User-generated online data has, in recent years, become an important basis for sociological research, and the ubiquity of social media presages the importance of an increased understanding of its inner workings in the spheres of criminology and sociology. This dissertation examines the dynamics of user-generated information on social media and social news in the wake of 53 criminal incidents which generated higher-than-average interest online. Using multiple platforms and analytical techniques, I investigate the dynamics of within- and between-platform information uptake, examine potential avenues and drawbacks of the actionable information available online during a crisis, and describe patterns and focal topics …

Worldbuilding: A Theory Of Resilience In Transgender And Gender Expansive Young People, Jennifer Debower
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Transgender and gender expansive (TGE) young people have long histories of surviving, resisting, and even thriving despite hostility. However, dominant narratives rarely explore their stories of agency and resilience. This research aims to address that gap by asking: Where are the stories of TGE youth's strength, creativity, and resistance? What lessons lie within them? Using a critical, constructivist grounded theory approach, this study examines how 16 TGE young people navigate and challenge transphobia’s precarious conditions. Results suggest that because the current realities do not make space for their existence, TGE young people find strength in creative practices (fashion, hair, body …
