A Comparison Of Spatially Explicit And Classic Regression Modelling Of Live Coral Cover Using Hyperspectral Remote-Sensing Data In The Al Wajh Lagoon, Red Sea, S Hamylton

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Live coral is a key component of the Al Wajh marine reserve in the Red Sea. The management of this reserve is dependent on a sound understanding of the existing spatial distribution of live coral cover and the environmental factors influencing live coral at the landscape scale. This study uses remote-sensing techniques to develop ordinary least squares and spatially lagged autoregressive explanatory models of the distribution of live coral cover inside the Al Wajh lagoon, Saudi Arabia. Live coral was modelled as a response to environmental controls such as water depth, the concentration of suspended sediment in the water column …

Comparison Between Experimental And Predicted Conveyor Belt Trajectories, David B. Hastie, Peter W. Wypych Jan 2012

Comparison Between Experimental And Predicted Conveyor Belt Trajectories, David B. Hastie, Peter W. Wypych

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Belt conveyors are commonly used in a multitude of industries to transport material from one location to another. Belt conveyors can be configured in many ways, from a single run which might form a stockpile, to many interconnected belt conveyors, necessitating the use of transfers to successfully deliver material through the system. Whichever method applies, the way in which material leaves the head of a conveyor will dictate the path the flow of material takes to the next step in the process. Many installations run successfully with systems that have been in operation for many years, however not all have …

Comparison Of Epson Scanner Quality For Radiochromic Film Evaluation, Hani Alnawaf, Peter K. N Yu, Martin Butson Jan 2012

Comparison Of Epson Scanner Quality For Radiochromic Film Evaluation, Hani Alnawaf, Peter K. N Yu, Martin Butson

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Epson Desktop scanners have been quoted as devices which match the characteristics required for the evaluation of radiation dose exposure by radiochromic films. Specifically, models such as the 10000XL have been used successfully for image analysis and are recommended by ISP for dosimetry purposes. This note investigates and compares the scanner characteristics of three Epson desktop scanner models including the Epson 10000XL, V700, and V330. Both of the latter are substantially cheaper models capable of A4 scanning. As the price variation between the V330 and the 10000XL is 20-fold (based on Australian recommended retail price), cost savings by using the …

Comparison Of The Removal Of Hydrophobic Trace Organic Contaminants By Forward Osmosis And Reverse Osmosis, Ming Xie, Long D. Nghiem, William E. Price, Menachem Elimelech

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

We compared the rejection behaviours of three hydrophobic trace organic contaminants, bisphenol A, triclosan and diclofenac, in forward osmosis (FO) and reverse osmosis (RO). Using erythritol, xylose and glucose as inert reference organic solutes and the membrane pore transport model, the mean effective pore size of a commercial cellulose-based FO membrane was estimated to be 0.74 nm. When NaCl was used as the draw solute, at the same water permeate flux of 5.4 L/m2 h (or 1.5 mm/s), the adsorption of all three compounds to the membrane in the FO mode was consistently lower than that in the RO mode. …

A Comparison Study Of Chain-Die Forming And Roll Forming By Forming A Top Hat Section, Yuankun Zhang, Shichao Ding Jan 2012

A Comparison Study Of Chain-Die Forming And Roll Forming By Forming A Top Hat Section, Yuankun Zhang, Shichao Ding

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Chain-die Forming, a novel sheet metal forming method, has been proposed and developed recently to overcome the problems that arose in roll forming. As an extension to roll forming, Chain-die Forming has been proposed to elongate the deformation length by increasing the virtual roll radii, and employing discrete profiled die-blocks which move on a track board with the desired large radii to im-plement or simulate the rotation of the virtual large rolls. The roll radii are so large and the forming length is so long that all redundant strain components occurring in roll forming are significantly reduced or even eliminated.

Comparison Of Methodologies For Assessment Of Harmonic Current Emission Limits For Large Installations Connected To Lv Networks, Biyanvilage Perera, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo, Victor J. Gosbell Jan 2012

Comparison Of Methodologies For Assessment Of Harmonic Current Emission Limits For Large Installations Connected To Lv Networks, Biyanvilage Perera, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo, Victor J. Gosbell

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

With the proliferation of large, disturbing installations (loads and distribution generators) connected to public low voltage networks, managing the harmonic voltage levels in the network has become a key concern to distribution network service providers (DNSPs). Therefore, it is important that DNSPs limit the harmonic current emission by individual installations. This paper reviews a number of methodologies that exist in the current technical literature in relation to the assessment of harmonic current emission limits for disturbing installations connected to the public LV network. Application of these methodologies is demonstrated through a case study on a test network. The study shows …

Comparison Of Ohs Course Accreditation Procedures In Australia, Sue Reed, Jane Whitelaw Jan 2012

Comparison Of Ohs Course Accreditation Procedures In Australia, Sue Reed, Jane Whitelaw

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

As OHS professional bodies have moved or are moving towards professional certification of their members, the need for accredited programs of study has developed. This move has been prompted by the requirement of the certification boards for the applicant to demonstrate that they have the minimum knowledge required to work at a professional level. The AIOH has had a course accreditation procedure for over 20 years as discussed by Whitelaw and Reed (2011) which has been well recognised by the profession, but until 2009 only one course had been accredited. In the last two years the AIOH has revised its …

New Structural Similarity Measure For Image Comparison, Prashan Premaratne, Malin Premaratne Jan 2012

New Structural Similarity Measure For Image Comparison, Prashan Premaratne, Malin Premaratne

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Subjective quality measures based on Human Visual System for images do not agree well with well-known metrics such as Mean Squared Error and Peak Signal to Noise Ratio. Recently, Structural Similarity Measure (SSIM) has received acclaim due to its ability to produce results on a par with Human Visual System. However, experimental results indicate that noise and blur seriously degrade the performance of the SSIM metric. Furthermore, despite SSIM's popularity, it does not provide adequate insight into how it handles 'structural similarity' of images. We propose a structural similarity measure based on approximation level of a given Discrete Wavelet Decomposition …

This study is based on descriptive statistic and correlation analysis served as preliminary exploration of the acceptance of the technology understudy. The study reports a high level of acceptance of teleconsultation technology in both emergency and non-emergency settings thus exhibits no significant difference in acceptance the acceptance of teleconsultation technology for both respective settings. The results …

Towards Greater Systemisation In Ci Research: An Exploration Of Social Development As A Framework For Comparison And Understanding, William Tibben Jan 2011

Towards Greater Systemisation In Ci Research: An Exploration Of Social Development As A Framework For Comparison And Understanding, William Tibben

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

The theme of complexity alludes to the difficulties community informatics (CI) researchers face when analysing use of ICTs by communities. In response, de Moor (2009a, 2009b) and Stillman (2010) identify the need for greater systemisation of CI research that enables complex socio-technical processes to be analysed over multiple cases. The principle by which such systemisation should occur is open to debate. It seems improbable that a single theoretical approach, at least in the short term, is going to satisfy everyone as greater systemisation is pursued. The paper suggests that, as a first step, efforts should be devoted to better appreciation …

The Long Life Of Birds: The Rat-Pigeon Comparison Revisited, William A. Buttemer, Anthony J. Hulbert, M K. Montgomery Jan 2011

The Long Life Of Birds: The Rat-Pigeon Comparison Revisited, William A. Buttemer, Anthony J. Hulbert, M K. Montgomery

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The most studied comparison of aging and maximum lifespan potential (MLSP) among endotherms involves the 7-fold longevity difference between rats (MLSP 5y) and pigeons (MLSP 35y). A widely accepted theory explaining MLSP differences between species is the oxidative stress theory, which purports that reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced during mitochondrial respiration damage bio-molecules and eventually lead to the breakdown of regulatory systems and consequent death. Previous rat-pigeon studies compared only aspects of the oxidative stress theory and most concluded that the lower mitochondrial superoxide production of pigeons compared to rats was responsible for their much greater longevity. This conclusion is …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Two analyses, cubic and piecewise random regression, were conducted to model growth of crossbred cattle from birth to about two years of age, investigating the ability of a piecewise procedure to fit growth traits without the complications of the cubic model. During a four-year period (1994-1997) of the Australian "Southern Crossbreeding Project", mature Hereford cows (N = 581) were mated to 97 sires of Angus, Belgian Blue, Hereford, Jersey, Limousin, South Devon, and Wagyu breeds, resulting in 1141 steers and heifers born over four years. Data included 13 (for steers) and eight (for heifers) live body weight measurements, made approximately …

A Comparison Study Of Ellipsoid Fitting For Pose Normalization Of Hippocampal Shapes, Luping Zhou, Oliver Salvado Jan 2011

A Comparison Study Of Ellipsoid Fitting For Pose Normalization Of Hippocampal Shapes, Luping Zhou, Oliver Salvado

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Pose normalization is an important step to establish shape correspondence for group comparison of anatomical structures. The most basic and widely used way is ellipsoid fitting, which provides three principal axes for shape alignment, and is often solved by least square fitting. In this paper, it is recognized that the deformation caused by neuro-degenerative diseases is usually locally irregular, behaving like the outliers to the majority of the anatomical surfaces. Therefore we hypothesize that the distance function in L1-norm may perform better than that in L2-norm for hippocampal surface fitting, and thus conduct a study to compare the influence of …

The Bremen Optimal Estimation differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) (BESD) algorithm for satellite based retrievals of XCO 2 (the column-average dry-air mole fraction of atmospheric CO 2) has been applied to Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Cartography (SCIAMACHY) data. It uses measurements in the O 2-A absorption band to correct for scattering of undetected clouds and aerosols. Comparisons with precise and accurate ground-based Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) measurements at four Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) sites have been used to quantify the quality of the new SCIAMACHY XCO 2 data set. Additionally, the results have been compared to …

A Comparison Study Of The Numerical Integration Methods In The Trajectory Tracking Application Of Redundant Robot Manipulators, Emre Sariyildiz, Hakan Temeltas Jan 2011

A Comparison Study Of The Numerical Integration Methods In The Trajectory Tracking Application Of Redundant Robot Manipulators, Emre Sariyildiz, Hakan Temeltas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Differential kinematic has a wide range application area in robot kinematics. The main advantage of the differential kinematic is that it can be easily implemented any kind of mechanisms. In differential kinematic method, Jacobian is used as a mapping operator in the velocity space. The joint velocities are required to be integrated to obtain the pose of the robot manipulator. This integration can be evaluated by using numerical integration methods, since the inverse kinematic equations are highly complex and nonlinear. Thus, the performances of the numerical integration methods affect the trajectory tracking application. This paper compares the performances of numerical …

This presentation compares and contrasts the context of adult learning for two groups of adult Indigenous students, one from the northern Australian tropics and one from far Northwestern Ontario. It also examines the ways that technology is used to try and bridge the distance between Indigenous adult learners' goals and educational opportunities. From this comparison we conclude that the educational gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous learners in Canada is closing, while the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians is widening. We reflect on the reasons why Indigenous adult learners in Northwestern Ontario are being better served in comparison to …

With an advent of the ubiquitous era, the demand for rechargeable batteries with a higher energy density is getting more and more critical. It is because applications are emerging such as electric vehicles and various types of portable electronic devices. Carbonaceous materials are commonly adopted as the anode material for commercial lithium-ion secondary batteries because it can reversibly intercalate or de-intercalate Li ion. However, low capacity of carbon has become a limiting factor in wider applications, and high capacity alternative to carbonaceous material has thus been sought for. Even if tin and silicon have been considered as one of the …

Average Mass Scan Of The Total Ion Chromatogram Versus Percentage Chemical Composition In Multivariate Statistical Comparison Of Complex Volatile Mixtures, Niko Radulovic, Polina Blagojevic, Danielle Skropeta

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The analysis of complex volatile mixtures by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is a time-consuming process. It involves separation and identification of the components based on their retention times and fragmentation patterns, followed by determination of their relative percentages from integration of their peak areas. Herein we show that multivariate statistical analysis of the relative abundances of the m/z values obtained from the average mass scans (AMS) of the complex mixture is a faster and potentially more reliable method of assessing these mixtures. To achieve this, 15 model complex mixtures, were prepared comprising varying amounts of 10 different constituents. The AMS …

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

As an important member of smart materials, magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) exhibit characteristics that their modulus can be controlled by an external magnetic field. Based on these experimental results, a viscoelastic solid model with four parameters was proposed to predict the performance of MRE. A building model, three stories high, was constructed using MATLAB SIMULINK to evaluate the performance of an MRE device in structural control. In addition, the performance of an MRF damper and an MRE device in structural control, where the resultant peak force was selected as a criterion in the evaluation process, was compared and discussed. Two controllers, …

Influence Of Consumers' Online Decision-Making Style On Comparison Shopping Proneness And Perceived Usefulness Of Comparison Shopping Tools, Young Park, Ulrike Gretzel

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Applications to support online comparison shopping are expected to become increasingly available to consumers. However, not all consumers equally engage in online comparison shopping and, thus, would not necessarily benefit from such tools. The study proposes that the perceived usefulness of comparison shopping tools depends on consumers‟ comparison shopping proneness, which in turn is influenced by consumers‟ online decision-making styles. An online survey using a consumer research panel was conducted to test the hypotheses in the context of travel comparison shopping tools. The results suggest that some consumer decision-making style dimensions influence comparison shopping proneness while others have no influence. …
