The role of microstructure in susceptibility to hydrogen uptake and property degradation is being evaluated using a number of high strength pipeline steels. To do so, a cellular automaton (CA) model has been used to examine the effect of grain size, as a first step in assessing the influence of microstructure. The simulation results of hydrogen diffusion into microstructures with different grain sizes are presented.

Passive confinement provided by fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) jackets increases the compressive strength and axial deformation capacity of concrete. This study explains a normalized confinement stiffness approach to quantify the strength and strain increase of FRP confined concrete using a previously proposed and most widely-used model for both active and passive confinement of concrete, and claims that these equations can still be used for FRP-confined concrete with very simple modifications. A comparison of the proposed model's accuracy to American Concrete Institute guidelines was made using experimental results reported in the literature. For self-regulated learning to be effective, students need to be able to accurately assess their own performance on a learning task and use this assessment for the selection of a new learning task. Evidence suggests, however, that students have difficulties with accurate self-assessment and task selection, which may explain the poor learning outcomes often found with self-regulated learning. We address the problem of recovering the time-dependent parameters of the Black-Scholes option pricing model when the underlying stock price dynamics are modelled by a finite-state, continuous-time Markov chain. The coupled system of Dupire-type partial differential equations is derived and formulated as an inverse Stieltjes moment problem. We provide numerical illustration on how to apply our method to simulated financial data. The accuracy of the model parameter estimation is examined and sensitivity analyses are included to study the behaviour of the estimated results when model parameters are varied.

A woman's capacity to participate in politics is a constitutionally entrenched and fundamental right in Bangladesh, repeatedly affirmed in several pieces of legislation, the most recent being the Local Government Act, 2009. Despite the endorsement of a series of affirmative features to promote women's equality, empirical research reveals very disappointing results. This study is the first to use a comprehensive decomposition of the Hicks–Moorsteen TFP index developed by O’Donnell (2010a) to analyse efficiency and productivity changes in a banking context. The paper investigates the efficiency and productivity growth of the Iranian banking industry between 2003 and 2008, encompassing pre- and post-2005-reform years. The advantage of this approach over the popular constant-returns-to-scale Malmquist productivity index is that it is free from any assumptions concerning firms’ returns to scale. Yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi) are angled throughout their global distribution and released in large numbers under the unsubstantiatedassumption of few impacts. The validity of this supposition was tested for southeastern Australian stocks. In all, 54 fishwere angled and released into cages with 36 controls and monitored for 5 d. Of the angled fish, 15% died, mostly as a consequenceof gill-hooking and the associated physiological and mechanical damage. Chest X-ray and CT examinations often find pulmonary nodules that could be malignant or benign. A case is presented and discussed here in order to improve diagnosis and management of pulmonary nodules. A 62-year-old lady was found to have multiple pulmonary nodules by X-ray when she complained of a cough and fever. This was confirmed by a CT scan. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) of one of the lung lesions reported scant atypical epithelial cells that stained positive for TTF-1 and cytokeratin 7, but negative for cytokeratin 20. Electrically conducting, robust fibres comprised of both an alginate (Alg) biopolymer and a polypyrrole (PPy) component have been produced using reactive wet-spinning. Using this approach polypyrrole-biopolymer fibres were also produced with single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), added to provide additional strength and conductivity. SEM images of the PPy-Alg composite fibres clearly show the tubular multifilament form of the alginate fibre impregnated with PPy nanoparticles. The fibres produced containing CNTs show a 78% increase in ultimate stress and 25% increase in elongation to break compared to PPy-alginate fibre. Young's modulus obtained for the PPy-Alg-CNT fibres showed a 30% increase compared to the …
