Exploring And Enhancing The Self-Concept Of Students With Learning Difficulties, With And Without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Waheeda Tabassam

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the self-concept, attributional style and self-efficacy beliefs of students with learning difficulties (LD) with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), compared to normally achieving peers. The thesis also examines the effectiveness of the attributional retraining technique in enhancing the academic self-perceptions of students with learning and attentional difficulties.

The thesis is developed in three stages: Stage-1 is concerned with the development of two instruments for the assessment of academic attributional style and academic self-efficacy beliefs for students in Grade 3 to 6. This stage examines the factor analysis, reliability and validity outcomes of these instruments. Stage-2 …

Descriptive Epidemiology And Correlates Of Physical Activity In Young Adults, Eva Rose Leslie Jan 2001

Descriptive Epidemiology And Correlates Of Physical Activity In Young Adults, Eva Rose Leslie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Physical inactivity, as a modifiable risk factor for a number of chronic diseases, is now a key public health concern. Age-related declines in leisure-time physical activity have been reported across the entire lifespan. Recent findings based on analyses of large cross-sectional and longitudinal data sets suggest that there is a steady decline in physical activity during the young adult years. Given the evidence linking sedentary lifestyle with increased risk for coronary heart disease and other chronic diseases, health experts have concluded that an important health objective is to increase physical activity levels among all persons including adolescents and young adults. …

A Relational Model Analysis Of User Acceptance Of The Korean Ecid Card, Sang-Seon Park Jan 2001

A Relational Model Analysis Of User Acceptance Of The Korean Ecid Card, Sang-Seon Park

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study attempted to discover the factors which may impact on determination of the level of user acceptance of the card to effectively implement the ECJD card in Korean society. Sociotechnical theory, and the Technical Acceptance Model (TAM) were used as a methodology to identify and predict the relationship of these factors to implementation of the card. Through the preliminary survey in 1997, the key factors (e.g. awareness of the ECID card, confidence in government, information crimes, privacy concerns and electronic surveillance) were discovered, and the identified key factors were also tested to discover their relationship to user acceptance of …

The Impact Of Family Relations And Personality Factors On Delinquent Behaviours Among Youth, Nadine C. Peiser Jan 2001

The Impact Of Family Relations And Personality Factors On Delinquent Behaviours Among Youth, Nadine C. Peiser

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Adolescent dehnquency is a growing social problem affecting individuals, families, and communities. The cunent research comprised three studies, which sought to explore the contribution of family and personality factors to self-reported delinquency, and to discover the nature of the relationship between perceptions of parental discipline style and perceptions of the seriousness of delinquent behaviour. The fust study examined the links between perceptions of family relationships, perceptions of parental discipline style, locus of control, self-esteem and selfreported delinquency among Australian high school stadents (N = 177). The prediction that locus of control and self-esteem would mediate the effects of family processes …

Contributions To Traceability Schemes, Yejing Wang Jan 2001

Contributions To Traceability Schemes, Yejing Wang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this thesis, we consider the traitor tracing problem.

We study c-frameproof codes and c-traceability schemes. We derive lower bounds on the maximum number of codewords in a class of frameproof codes and traceability schemes, and give constructions for both with more codewords than the best known.

We propose a new kind of traitor tracing scheme, called sequential traitor tracing, that can efficiently identify all traitors and requires small real-time computation. We analyse the scheme and give constructions. We obtain the convergence time of these schemes and compare it with the convergence time of the known dynamic schemes. …

Modelling And Field-Oriented Control Of A Synchronous Reluctance Motor With Rectangular Stator Current Excitation, Colin Coates Jan 2001

Modelling And Field-Oriented Control Of A Synchronous Reluctance Motor With Rectangular Stator Current Excitation, Colin Coates

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The rotor saliency of the axially laminated synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) produces a rectangular air-gap flux density distribution. Optimal torque / rms ampere is achieved from machine if a rectangular stator current distribution interacts with this flux. The impact of rectangular stator currents on the design and control of the SynRM are considered.

A design model is developed that assumes rectangular stator currents. The design model is based on an existing lumped element model of the SynRM magnetic circuit that has been extended to include saturation effects. All stator and rotor dimensions are included in the design model. The key …

Self-Matching And Interleaving In Some Integer Sequences And The Gauss Map, Bruce P. Bates Jan 2001

Self-Matching And Interleaving In Some Integer Sequences And The Gauss Map, Bruce P. Bates

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is primarily concerned with self-matching and interleaving within the following integer sequences: Paperfolding, the Stern-Brocot Sequence (and the related Stern-Brocot Tree), the Hyperbinary Sequence (and the related Hyperbinary Tree), the Gray Code and the Stickbreaking Sequence. It also investigates symmetry properties of the Gauss Map and the connection the Gauss Map has with the Stern-Brocot Tree.

Symmetry within the Gauss Map is shown to exist between neighbouring iterates. Repetition and Symmetry are shown to exist both within the same iterate, and amongst neighbouring iterates of the Generalised Gauss Map, which is an extension of the Gauss Map such …

Conservation Status Of The Seagrass Posidonia Australis Hook F. In South East Australia, Alexander Meehan Jan 2001

Conservation Status Of The Seagrass Posidonia Australis Hook F. In South East Australia, Alexander Meehan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Posidonia australis Hook f. is the dominant seagrass in a number of estuaries in south eastern Australia, where it provides habitat and food for a variety of marine fauna, and acts as an important nursery area for juvenile fish, including species of commercial importance. Elsewhere in Australia, there have been numerous reports of significant declines in the abundance of P. australis, largely as a result of anthropogenic impacts. These losses have caused great concern about the conservation status of P. australis, as it is thought to be slow to recover from damage and difficult to transplant. This study …

Membrane Alterations During Apoptosis: A Study Into The Possible Involvement Of Srebp-2, Marc Walter Jan 2001

Membrane Alterations During Apoptosis: A Study Into The Possible Involvement Of Srebp-2, Marc Walter

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A major aim of this research was to examine the biological relevance during apoptosis of the caspase-mediated cleavage of sterol-regulatory-element-binding-protein-2 (SREBP-2), a transcription factor that is a key regulator of cholesterol synthesis. The cleavage of SREBP-2 was investigated in the human HL60, U937, and Jurkat cell lines exposed to the apoptosis inducers etoposide, TNFa/cycloheximide, and staurosporine. The literature indicates that these cell lines and inducers have been used before in a variety of studies concerned with different aspects of apoptosis. However, the mode of cell death induced is dosage dependent and can vary with different conditions between different laboratories. A …

Studies On Human Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase (Ido), Tamantha Kim Littlejohn Jan 2001

Studies On Human Indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase (Ido), Tamantha Kim Littlejohn

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and the least abundant amino acid in humans. An understanding of the metabolism of L-tryptophan is therefore physiologically important. The enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxgyenase (IDO) catalyses the first, and rate limiting, step in the major pathway of tryptophan metabolism, the kynurenine pathway. The physiological role of IDO is not fully understood, but is of great interest because IDO is a widely distributed enzyme in humans and can alter the levels of tryptophan, which is vital for cell growth. Induction of IDO may therefore have a protective role in bacterial, viral and protozoan infections. Additionally, tryptophan …

An Investigation Of Capture Effects In Ieee 802.11 Networks, Christopher Graham Ware Jan 2001

An Investigation Of Capture Effects In Ieee 802.11 Networks, Christopher Graham Ware

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Local area wireless networking is quickly becoming a preferred technology for many networking applications. This is driven by the introduction of the IEEE 802.11 and ETSI HiperLAN standards, combined with the promise of explicit quality of service mechanisms designed to support exciting new services over wireless media. These developments have the potential to fundamentally alter the way a user interacts with the network, as well as opening a raft of potential new applications able to exploit the inherent benefits of wireless media.

Incorporating both the wireless local area and mobile ad hoc network paradigm, this thesis presents a comprehensive investigation …

Channel And Floodplain Characteristics Of Cooper Creek, Central Australia, Simon D. Fagan Jan 2001

Channel And Floodplain Characteristics Of Cooper Creek, Central Australia, Simon D. Fagan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is an investigation of the formation and distribution of the different channel patterns that co-exist on the broad, low-gradient floodplain surface of the Cooper Creek, an ephemeral, arid-zone river in south west Queensland, Australia. Although previous research described some aspects of the channel as being inherited from wetter Pleistocene periods, all the alluvial surface features were found to be consistent with a contemporary origin broadly in equilibrium with present environmental conditions.

The anastomosing channel system is comprised of interconnected narrow and deep channels with resistant, cohesive boundaries. Levees are formed whose size is related to the size of …

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is about Boolean functions and their cryptographic properties, Hadamard matrices, orthogonal designs, and their applications.

An original definition of Boolean functions and their properties are given. After an introduction to the background of Boolean functions, different cryptographic properties of Boolean functions are described.

Bent functions play a most important role in cryptography. Several classes of bent functions are introduced. Some methods of construction high nonlinearity and balanced Boolean functions base on bent functions are described. In the thesis, the author shows some applications on Boolean functions. The author also introduced the relationship between coding theory and Boolean functions. …

Combinatorial Designs With Applications In Cryptography, Ghulam Rasool Chaudhry Jan 2001

Combinatorial Designs With Applications In Cryptography, Ghulam Rasool Chaudhry

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Since the evolution of human culture, small groups of trustworthy individuals have always played an important role in making crucial decisions in all areas of life. In information based systems, cryptography supports group activity by offering a wide range of cryptographic operations which can only be successfully executed if a well-defined group of people agrees to cooperate. Most of the stronger modern cryptographic systems have been designed and constructed using mathematical functions.

This dissertation looks at the minimal structures of combinatorial designs and their possible uses in cryptographic schemes. These minimal structures can be used to reconstruct a combinatorial design …

Asymptotics On The General Fractionally Integrated Processes With Applications To Unit Root Testing, Qiying Wang Jan 2001

Asymptotics On The General Fractionally Integrated Processes With Applications To Unit Root Testing, Qiying Wang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

As a basic tool, asymptotic theory (in particular, functional limit theorem) plays a key role in characterizing the limit distribution of various statistics arising from statistical inferences in economic time series, such as testing for unit roots, testing for stationarity, and time series regression. Asymptotics on the fractional processes and the summable linear processes have been studied by many people. However, the results in the literature are quite restrictive on both the processes themselves and the conditions used in deriving the results. For example, a functional limit theorem is only available for a general fractional process with innovations being iid …

Beyond Boosting: Detecting Noisy And Inverse Observations, Virginia Wheway Jan 2001

Beyond Boosting: Detecting Noisy And Inverse Observations, Virginia Wheway

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Noisy data is inherent in many real-life and industrial modelling situations. If prior knowledge of such data were available, it would be a simple process to remove or account for noise and improve model robustness. Unfortunately, in the majority of learning situations, the presence of underlying noise is suspected but difficult to detect.

Ensemble classification techniques such as bagging, [4] ^boosting [20] and arcing algorithms [5] have received much attention in the recent literature. Such techniques have been shown to lead to reduced classification error on unseen cases, and this Thesis demonstrates that they may also be employed as noise …

Improving Statistical Education Through The Experience Of Reflective Practice, Anne Porter Jan 2001

Improving Statistical Education Through The Experience Of Reflective Practice, Anne Porter

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is the recount of a study that began with the aim of unpacking the statistical expertise of the teacher and author, with the intent of improving statistics teaching and learning. In the process of doing this, the researcher examined the expertise of other experts through a case study of a statistics professor, concept mapping of ideas of statistics professionals and through an examination of statistical literature. As the researcher and teacher moved to a position of accepting that statistics is a study of variation, she discovered a failure by authors of many introductory textbooks to appropriately acknowledge variation …

Numerical Modelling Of The Propagation Of Ocean Waves, Huan-Wen Liu Jan 2001

Numerical Modelling Of The Propagation Of Ocean Waves, Huan-Wen Liu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis considers the refraction and diffraction of both linear and nonlinear waves. In the first part, a linear numerical model based on the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRBEM) is presented for the study of combined diffraction and refraction of linear waves. This model is more general than that presented by Zhu (1993a) in the sense that areas or coastlines where the water depth is zero can be successfully dealt with. Our comparison study shows that the new model is very accurate for the propagation of long waves such as tsunamis. Moreover, it is numerically very efficient in comparison …

Semi-Analytical And Numerical Solutions Describing Microwave Heating In Waveguides, Bin Liu Jan 2001

Semi-Analytical And Numerical Solutions Describing Microwave Heating In Waveguides, Bin Liu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Semi-analytical models are presented describing the microwave heating of materials in waveguides in a number of different scenarios. Coupling occurs between the heating of the slab and the microwave radiation via temperature dependency the electrical conductivity and the thermal absorptivity (which are related to dielectric constant and dielectric loss). Two forms of temperature dependency considered, an Arrhenius-type law, which is bounded for large temperatures, and a quadratic relationship. The governing equations are the forced heat equation and a steady-state version of Maxwell's equations while the boundary conditions on the material take into account both convective and radiative heat-loss. Semianalytical solutions, …

A Critical Review Of The Use In New South Wales Mental Health Services Of The Principles Of Psychiatric Epidemiology To Guide The Setting Of Clinical Priorities, Resource Allocation And Outcomes Evaluation, Paul Fanning Jan 2001

A Critical Review Of The Use In New South Wales Mental Health Services Of The Principles Of Psychiatric Epidemiology To Guide The Setting Of Clinical Priorities, Resource Allocation And Outcomes Evaluation, Paul Fanning

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The development of mental health services in Australia and internationally is entering a new era. Due to landmark reports by the World Health Organisation (1996) and the Office of the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr David Satcher (1999) the area of mental illness has been given a much higher priority within health generally. In Australia the National Health Policy (1994) identified the area of mental illness as a national health priority but lamented the absence of epidemiological information to guide service planning and development. In New South Wales the report of the Chief Health Officer, Dr George Rubin …

How It Means Is Not What It Means: A Defence Fo Stroud's "Wittgenstein And Logical Necessity", Luke A. Thompson Jan 2001

How It Means Is Not What It Means: A Defence Fo Stroud's "Wittgenstein And Logical Necessity", Luke A. Thompson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The primary task of this thesis is to provide an elaboration on and quahfied defence of Barry Stroud's exposition of Ludwig Wittgenstein's ideas in his paper "Wittgenstein and Logical Necessity". This paper is Stroud's response to Michael Dummett's well known explication of Wittgenstein's views on logical and mathematical necessity in his paper "Wittgenstein's Philosophy of Mathematics". I track the debate between Dummett, Stroud, and Hilary Putnam as to the actual nature of Wittgenstein's views, but also attempt to properly situate the field of debate. I argue that the debate properly belongs to the philosophy of meaning, and on that basic …

Once Upon A Place: Writing The Illawarra, Peter Knox Jan 2001

Once Upon A Place: Writing The Illawarra, Peter Knox

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In my search for an Illawarra literary identity, I have annotated nearly 300 works published between 1825 and 1995, including prose fiction, verse, scripts, journals, autobiographies and reminiscences. These texts deal overtly with the Illawarra region, as I define it in this paper. The Illawarra which emerges from these texts began as an idyllic yet threatening wilderness which was eventually transformed by the colonising process. It was seen variously during its period of subjugation as a rich site of natural resources, a place for pioneering adventure, a sanctuary away from the decay of Sydney, and a focus of parochial attitudes. …

Composing For The Big Ones: A Study Of Scoring And Structure In Slow Movements From Karel Husa's Concerto For Wind Ensemble And Concerto For Orchestra, Karlin Greenstreet Love

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study examines the compositional element of instrument usage; in particular, the ways Karel Husa has used the timbral resources of wind ensemble and symphony orchestra. To this end, an analysis method was designed that illuminates relationships between scoring choices and structural function.

The Limited Chances To Be Heard: An Analysis Of The Institutionalisation Of An Official Accounting Language In The Australian Accounting Community, Kellie Michele Mccombie Jan 2001

The Limited Chances To Be Heard: An Analysis Of The Institutionalisation Of An Official Accounting Language In The Australian Accounting Community, Kellie Michele Mccombie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The purpose of this thesis is to provide an explanation for the limited/restricted chances that the Australian accounting community has to be heard. This involves revealing that the Australian accounting community has experienced linguistic unification, a process that results in a standardised language. The standard language is produced and promoted, by the accounting profession, as an official language. It is revealed that as a result of this process, two interdependent problems have emerged. The first problem identified is that of a dominant accounting profession who have created, and control, the institutional arrangements where discussion takes place. Specifically, through accounting standard …

Gender Inequalities In India: The Need For Education For Emancipation, Vinathe Sharma Jan 2001

Gender Inequalities In India: The Need For Education For Emancipation, Vinathe Sharma

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Most women in India are restricted in their experiencing of the fundamental rights of a human life. Some of these are right to birth and life, right to health, education, self-respect, dignity and identity, right to fear-free and taboo-free marital life, decision-making and participation in social, civil and political activities. In other words, they are forced to live as second-class citizens in a modem democratic society characterised by inequalities. Their personal and social space is curtailed in a patriarchal set up diminishing their individuality and capabilities for becoming fully contributing and participating citizens. This study explores the lives of Indian …

The Internet As A Delivery System For News, Kenneth Morris Jones Jan 2001

The Internet As A Delivery System For News, Kenneth Morris Jones

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis documents the application of the Internet as a delivery system for news and journalism.

Its principal focus is the use of the World Wide Web as a publishing médium by Australian media sources.

The use of the World Wide Web as a delivery system for news was found to be commonplace, but conservative in its style. There was little innovation. Attempts to take advantage of the unique features that the Internet offers as a delivery system were uncommon.

Content was mostly "legacy" content recycled from non-Internet sources of news. These were mostly newspapers.

There was essentially no regular …
