The Encouragement Of "Reasonableness" Through The Practice Of Philosophy With High School Students At Risk, Maureen M. Mcdermott Jan 2001

The Encouragement Of "Reasonableness" Through The Practice Of Philosophy With High School Students At Risk, Maureen M. Mcdermott

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The aim of this research project has been to critically assess the potential of philosophic discussion to elicit reasonableness in a group of high school students at risk of being excluded from their school. The group of students comprised ten boys and two girls from Years Nine and Ten, in a multicultural school situated in a socio-economically deprived area of Sydney. The general behaviour and participation of these twelve students had been judged unacceptable by a panel of staff. The latter, called the Student Support Group, was made up of the school principal, the assistant principal, the school counsellor, the …

An Investigation Of Auditors' Perceptions Of Potential Factors Influencing Auditor Independence: A Case Based On Selected Indonesian Auditors, Toto Rusmanto Jan 2001

An Investigation Of Auditors' Perceptions Of Potential Factors Influencing Auditor Independence: A Case Based On Selected Indonesian Auditors, Toto Rusmanto

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Most (if not all) studies on the perceptions of auditor independence were conducted using a quantitative approach. Sending questionnaires to collect data and testing hypothesis by the use of statistics have been very common. The lack of literature on auditor independence using a qualitative approach has inspired this present study, since the advantages of the qualitative approach cannot be reached by the quantitative.

This is a perceptual study of auditor independence using an ethnographic, qualitative approach. Twenty-nine Indonesian auditors have been interviewed, in order to investigate their perceptions of factors that could affect auditor independence. Two theoretical models of independence, …

Measurement In Financial Accounting: Critical Support For Historical Cost, John Bede Ryan Jan 2001

Measurement In Financial Accounting: Critical Support For Historical Cost, John Bede Ryan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Historical cost accounting properly interpreted, referred to as the monetary model, is critically evaluated as the main source of financial information relevant for assessment of money capital maintenance, and also as a major component of accountability of directors to shareholders. The formal representation of the elements of the accounting equation in the double entry calculus (DEC) portrays the relationships between the elements. Changes in assets and liabilities comprise the primitives of the system. General postulates provide the means for deriving a specific interpretation of the DEC from information needs of users. Money capital maintenance and stewardship of money funds are …

The Making Of "Middle-Man" Minority: The Experiences Of Chinese Women And Men Accountants In Accountancy In New Zealand, Soon Nam Kim Jan 2001

The Making Of "Middle-Man" Minority: The Experiences Of Chinese Women And Men Accountants In Accountancy In New Zealand, Soon Nam Kim

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Whilst the issue of racial disparity is becoming an important theme in accounting, the majority of previous research on this issue has focused mainly on ex-colonized ethnic minority groups, such as Afro-Americans, Hispanics or indigenous people, and has ignored non-white, non-black and non-indigenous ethnic minorities in accounting. Focusing on the experiences of Chinese women and men accountants, the foremost important non-white, non-black and non-indigenous ethnic minority group amongst previously ignored ethnic minority groups, in the New Zealand accountancy profession, this thesis endeavours to articulate the silences and omissions of issues of race/ethnicity in contemporary accounting literature especially aiming to critically …

Determination Of Atmospheric Ozone Solar Infrared, Ultraviolet And Visible Spectroscopy, Frances A. Phillips Jan 2001

Determination Of Atmospheric Ozone Solar Infrared, Ultraviolet And Visible Spectroscopy, Frances A. Phillips

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The importance of ozone in the chemistry and the radiative balance of the atmosphere is well established. Several ground and satellite based methods are available for measuring total column or the vertical distribution of ozone. The most common ground based instruments that measure ozone are the Dobson and the Brewer instruments, while ozone sondes measure vertical distribution of ozone. There are six Dobson instruments located in Australia, and ozone sondes are launched from one location (Laverton, Victoria). Solar atmospheric spectroscopy is an established technique to measure the total column amounts of trace atmospheric gases and aerosols. Ozone has a rich …

Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry Of Peptides And Proteins: From Proteomics To The Characterisation Of Protein Complexes, Jennifer A. Burgess Jan 2001

Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry Of Peptides And Proteins: From Proteomics To The Characterisation Of Protein Complexes, Jennifer A. Burgess

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis explores three different applications of electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) for protein analysis. An example of the identification of proteins following separation by 2-dimensional electrophoresis is presented with a study of proteins released from mitochondria following low-conductance permeability transition (LC-PT). A number of mitochondrial matrix proteins were identified from gels of the supernatant of mitochondria that had not undergone LC-PT. These findings raise questions regarding the release of proteins from normally functioning mitochondria. A second possibility is that the integrity of some of the mitochondrial membranes in the cell-free system may have been compromised. The identification of peroxisomal …

Human Lens Protein Modification: The Role Of Kynurenine And 3-Hydroxykynurenine, Santiago Vazquez Jan 2001

Human Lens Protein Modification: The Role Of Kynurenine And 3-Hydroxykynurenine, Santiago Vazquez

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Kynurenine (Kyn) and 3-hydroxykynurenine (3-OHKyn) are present in the human lens where they play a protective role. With age, human lens proteins become increasingly yellow. A marked increase in protein colouration is also observed with the increasing severity of age related nuclear cataract. The molecular basis for the increase in colour with age is not well understood, however, it has been proposed, at least in result from modification by UV filter compounds such as 3-OHKyn. Until recently, however, no direct evidence for these modifications has been found. To explore the of these UV-filters in the lens, model studies have been …

Separation And Recovery Of Metal Ions Using Conducting Polymers, Jie Ding Jan 2001

Separation And Recovery Of Metal Ions Using Conducting Polymers, Jie Ding

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Two different approaches for achieving separation and recovery of metal ions from aqueous solutions using conducting polymers have been demonstrated. The first approach is the electroless recovery of metal ions using conducting polymer modified RVC (Reticulated Vitreous Carbon) composite materials, while the second is the electrochemically controlled transport of metal ions across conducting polymer membranes.

For the electroless recovery of gold from aqueous solutions, a range of conducting polymers including polypyrroles, polyanilines and polythiophenes with different reduction potentials were synthesized and characterized. Both conducting polymer modified RVC composite materials and conducting polymer membranes were used. Recovery of gold from acidic, …

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Chiral Substituted Polyanilines, Ekaterina V. Strounina Jan 2001

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Chiral Substituted Polyanilines, Ekaterina V. Strounina

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes the synthesis and characterisation of a range of novel, chiral conducting polymers formed from substituted anilines, which may have potential in future applications such as chirality assessment, asymmetric synthesis and chiral separations. Their redox and pH switching and ionochromic properties are also explored. A particular focus is the water-soluble sulfonated polyaniline, poly(2- methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid) (PMAS), where two ways of inducing main chain chirality in PMAS have been successfully developed.

In Chapter 3 it is shown that PMAS can be deposited in a highly optically active form via the potentiodynamic polymerisation of the monomer 2-methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid (MAS) in …

Social Welfare Aspects Of Development In A Transition Economy: Application To Vietnam, Dzung The Nguyen Jan 2001

Social Welfare Aspects Of Development In A Transition Economy: Application To Vietnam, Dzung The Nguyen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Social welfare aspects of development in the transition from a centrally planned system to a market driven economy are of increasing theoretical and practical interest. However, this subject area is characterised by a number of important knowledge gaps concerning both essential concepts of social welfare and methodologies of its exploration, which are magnified by the fundamental changes introduced in the transition process. Specific features due to geography and history add to the complexity.

This thesis represents an attempt at reducing the gaps by developing an innovative conceptual framework and methodological tools for studying social welfare in a developing transition economy …

Trade Arrangements, Productivity Growth And Firm Level Technical Efficiency In Textiles And Clothing Industries Of Australia And Bangladesh 1972-1998, I. K.M. Wadud

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

With inter-country differences in comparative advantage and the resultant perceived significance for product specialization, trade-based development strategies have become the key to ascending the development ladder. The role played by the textHes and clothing industries during the embryonic stages of such a process is enormous, but was Hmited through protective measures, such as the Multi Fibre Arrangement (MFA) adopted by the net importer developed economies. With the ongoing globalisation process under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO), small players in the world market such as Australia and Bangladesh have been faced with severe policy questions. In view this, …

Meaning In Is Development: Understanding System Requirements And Use With Actor-Network Theory, Jim Underwood Jan 2001

Meaning In Is Development: Understanding System Requirements And Use With Actor-Network Theory, Jim Underwood

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Design is a process of matching technical possibilities to user needs. Informatlon systems development methodologies usually rely on achieving this match through the development of mutual understanding between technical experts and users. With traditional life-cycle methodologies this understanding is sought via increasingly detailed agreements as development passes from stage to stage, while with prototyping understanding is continuously refined through interaction with models of the proposed system. If mutual understanding is not achieved it seems likely that this will lead to systems failure.

System understanding is represented by a variety of texts - documents, diagrams, conversations and other system models. Meanings …

"Workers Want A Say: We Have Something To Say" : Workers' Perspectives Of Management At Bhp Refractories, Cecily Miriam Boas Jan 2001

"Workers Want A Say: We Have Something To Say" : Workers' Perspectives Of Management At Bhp Refractories, Cecily Miriam Boas

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

"No One Up There is Listening to Me"

This dissertation addresses the importance and value of attending to the voices of workers in an industrial setting.

The multi-dimensional self-perceptions of workers at a Refractories plant-who are not usually heard in practice or in the literature-provide insights into their world that are not commonly available to those outside the business. The workers' perceptions of modes of managing, including what they saw as contributing to the silencing of their voices, provide an interpretation and awareness of their working environment beyond their immediate tasks. The intention of this study is to present their …

Janus: The Multiple Faces Of Engineering Design, Ross D. Wotherspoon Jan 2001

Janus: The Multiple Faces Of Engineering Design, Ross D. Wotherspoon

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study is a sociological exploration of the work of engineering design. The data for this research were generated from a two-year ethnographic study of three engineering design projects within an Australian iron and steel producing company. This study provides an account of the activities undertaken, by engineers and others, during the design of human computer interfaces for process control.

The study takes a symbolic interactionist perspective and acknowledges its criticisms. The study draws on Strauss's social worlds/arena theory, and Clarke's subsequent conceptualisation of the theory in an organisational context, to provide a broad set of sensitising concepts focussed on …

An Empirical Study Of International Correspondent Banking In Australia, Soon-Lim Chan Jan 2001

An Empirical Study Of International Correspondent Banking In Australia, Soon-Lim Chan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Correspondent banking (corbanking) is basically bank to bank business. With the changing banking environment, corbanking services enter a new phase, from the traditional way of reciprocal products and services received, to the modem way of using corbanking as a strategic tool. Corbanks can offer their clients solutions that cross individual product boundaries and span multiple currencies and geography. Corbanking is therefore identified as a good altemative for boosting profit and share price targets of banks. Corbanking has been neglected in the banking literaUire and many research problems and questions have not been tackled and remain unresolved. This thesis aims at …

Sintering, Microstructure And Properties Of Wc-Feal Composite Materials, Ahmed Yussef Mosbah

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Tungsten carbide-based hardmetals with iron aluminide intermetallic binder have been processed using uniaxial hot pressing. The new binder, a binary B2-iron aluminide alloy with a composition of 40 at% aluminium, was used in stead of conventional cobalt binder. Following optimisation of the sintering process, the microstructure and properties of these new materials were assessed and compared with those of the conventional tungsten carbide/cobalt hardmetals. Sintering temperatures were above the melting point of the aluminide binder and all sintering was performed in the presence of liquid phase.

The tungsten carbide/iron aluminide composites exhibited low densification at high volume fractions of the …

Administrative Colonialism: District Administration And Colonial 'Middle Management' In Kelantan 1909-1919 And The Eastern Highlands Of Papua New Guinea 1947-1957, Charles M. Hawksley Jan 2001

Administrative Colonialism: District Administration And Colonial 'Middle Management' In Kelantan 1909-1919 And The Eastern Highlands Of Papua New Guinea 1947-1957, Charles M. Hawksley

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study explores the structure of colonial power at the level of the district in Kelantan under British administration between 1909-1919, and in the eastern highlandsof Papua New Guinea under Australian administration between 1947-1957. It examines the stated aims and actions of district administrators in two examples of what is termed administrative colonialism, a type of colonial power dependent on regulation and governmentality rather than on physical force, and not based on economic exploitation. In doing so it argues that traditional explanations of imperialism and colonialism are inadequate in explaining the structures of power that underpin these two administrations and …

Living In Translation': Postcolonial Feminism(S) In The Works Of Shashi Deshpande And Prabha Ganorkar, Shalmalee Palekar Jan 2001

Living In Translation': Postcolonial Feminism(S) In The Works Of Shashi Deshpande And Prabha Ganorkar, Shalmalee Palekar

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This dissertation seeks to find under-mapped territories in the discursive formations of postcolonial cultural productions, especially within the framework of Indian women's writing and feminism. These spaces can be the source of aporia because they seek to establish and contribute to a dialogue that is situated beyond debilitating models of nationalism, manicheanism and even hybridit3^ As a means of pointing to these spaces, the poetry of a Marathi poet — Prabha Ganorkar— has been translated and analysed in order to discuss how her oeuvre falls outside prescribed models of postcolonial literatures, and, therefore, meets/creates invisible barriers in its canonisation.

Financial Deregulation, Banking Development, And The Likelihood Of Banking Fragility: The Case Of Indonesia, Siti Astiyah

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The objective of this thesis is to examine the relationship between interest rates, saving through the banking sector, credit from banks, and private investment using the financial deregulation hypothesis and the determinants of the probability of banking fragility for the Indonesian case. Some of the financial deregulation hypothesis related to those variables and the determinants of the likelihood of banking fragility has been tested using cross country data, but only a few studies have been performed using country specific data and there is no study for the particulars of the Indonesian case. Therefore, this study is intended to fill those …

The Times Of Our Lives: Women, Leisure And Postgraduate Research, Coralie Mccormack Jan 2001

The Times Of Our Lives: Women, Leisure And Postgraduate Research, Coralie Mccormack

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study explores the interconnections between leisure and postgraduate research in the lives of six women. The author and the text draw the reader into interactions to create meanings as the women tell their stories. The value of this thesis derives from its time perspective — the simultaneous view of the women's everyday lives 'across time' (across each woman's lifetime) and 'in time' (during her time as a postgraduate researcher).

This research develops and documents a process I term storying stories as an alternative way to approach and re-present interview transcripts. In this three-stage process interview transcripts were viewed through …

Analysis And Management Of Outbursts: With Particular Reference To The Bulli Coal Seam, Christopher Royce Harvey

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The Bulli Coal Seam, located in the Illawarra Coalfield of New South Wales, Australia has a long and varied history of sudden outbursts. From available information this problem has resulted in twelve (12) fatalities over the last one hundred and five (105) years, with over four hundred (400) separate outburst incidents being identified. These incidents vary in severity and intensity from the discharge of 1 to 2 tonnes of coal, with a slight increase in gas emission, to the discharge of 200 to 400 tonnes of coal some 6,000 m3 of gas being liberated and large items of mining …

Analytical And Laboratory Modelling Of Granular Filters For Embankment Dams, Mark R. Locke Jan 2001

Analytical And Laboratory Modelling Of Granular Filters For Embankment Dams, Mark R. Locke

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Granular filters are used in embankment dams to protect the dam core material from internal erosion, while draining seepage water to prevent saturation of the downstream embankment. In this thesis, a mathematical model is developed to describe the timedependent processes of filtration of non-cohesive base soils, modelling the rate of erosion and transport of particles into the filter. As particles are captured within the filter, they are able to retain progressively finer base soil particles until a self-filtration zone forms that is able to prevent any further erosion. The model predictions are verified with a series of laboratory tests in …

Evaluation Of Parameters Effecting Blast Induced Vibrations, Leslie W. Armstrong Jan 2001

Evaluation Of Parameters Effecting Blast Induced Vibrations, Leslie W. Armstrong

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The following research focuses on the effect of measuring blast induced vibrations and the effect of the monitoring equipment and procedure on the outcomes.

Mining and quarrying operations today are faced with ever increasing restrictions on their operations especially in the environmental field. Development applications for new operations have to contend with environmental issues such as dust, air pollutants, blast induced vibration and noise levels that at times restrict production outputs. Vibration monitoring has become an integral part of the mine/quarry operations and it is essential that the operators have confidence in the equipment that is used to measure these …

Giant Herbig-Haro Flows: Identification And Consequences, Stacy Lyall Mader Jan 2001

Giant Herbig-Haro Flows: Identification And Consequences, Stacy Lyall Mader

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Herbig-Haro (HH) objects are the optical components of outflows associated with young stellar objects. Characteristic spectra of HH objects include strong Hα and [SII] emission (6717/6737Å) which arises as the stellar wind from a source impacts with the surrounding interstellar medium. With the discovery that HH flows can attain sizes of a parsec or more, a natural course of action is to determine their distribution in star forming regions and what effect they have on the surrounding interstellar medium. As most known giant HH flows extend up to several degrees on the sky, only the largest CCD imaging cameras can …

Keyhole Gas Tungsten Arc Welding: A New Process Variant, Brian Laurence Jarvis Jan 2001

Keyhole Gas Tungsten Arc Welding: A New Process Variant, Brian Laurence Jarvis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The topic of this thesis is the discovery and development of a robust 'keyhole mode' of the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process. This process variant represents a significant departure from conventional fusion welding processes, and is not explicable by traditional models of keyhole formation and behaviour. To be specific, the well-known keyhole processes of plasma, laser and electron beam welding are dependent on the generation of significance ablation (or 'recoil') pressure. Furthermore, there has been an acceptance that this is an essential characteristic of all keyholes. The power densities associated with GTAW are known to be too low to …

Shear Behaviour Of Fully Grouted Bolts Under Constant Normal Stiffness Condition, Ashitava Dey Jan 2001

Shear Behaviour Of Fully Grouted Bolts Under Constant Normal Stiffness Condition, Ashitava Dey

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Research on rock bolting technology has been extensively pursued, in both civil and mining engineering, for several decades. The study of bolting technology embraced initially rigid re-bars and subsequently flexible cable bolts. Generally, the past studies were focused on bolt strength and their load bearing capacities in relation to physical size (length and diameter) and material properties. Very little work has been reported on the influence of bolt surface configuration on the load transfer mechanisms between the bolt and the host rock. Also, previous research on the influence of bolting on rock joint reinforcement and stabilisation has been carried out …

On-Line Tool Wear Estimation In Cnc Turning Operations, Chatchapol Chungchoo Jan 2001

On-Line Tool Wear Estimation In Cnc Turning Operations, Chatchapol Chungchoo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In order to prevent tool breakage and resultant decrease in productivity in unmanned turning operations, many researchers have attempted to develop tool wear estimation and classification models. These include neural network models, fuzzy logic models and working scenario for quantitative models. The worn tools need to be replaced before their wear exceeds the allowed limits. Normally, cutting forces, AErms and cutting conditions including cutting speed, feed rate, rake angle and depth of cut are employed as inputs in these models. In the recent past, however, many researches have focused on flank wear prediction and off-line tool wear prediction systems. Additionally, …

Transport Boundaries For Pneumatic Conveying, Jianglin Yi Jan 2001

Transport Boundaries For Pneumatic Conveying, Jianglin Yi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Pneumatic conveying is being selected for an increasing number of industrial applications and products and is playing a more vital and integral role in the transportation of solid materials such as plastic pellets, grain and chemicals. However, despite all the minimum conveying velocity research (one of the operating boundaries for pneumatic conveying) that has been undertaken for several decades, the wide scatter and contradictions in the predictions of the minimum conveying velocity for dilute phase pneumatic conveying exist yet, determination of the operating boundaries for pneumatic conveying (mainly maximum conveying velocity for dense phase and minimum conveying velocity for dilute …
