Policy And Practice In Music Education In New South Wales State Primary Schools, Deirdre Russell-Bowie Jan 1993

Policy And Practice In Music Education In New South Wales State Primary Schools, Deirdre Russell-Bowie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This project focuses primarily on the development and implementation of the New South Wales (K-6) Music Syllabus (1984), and the effectiveness of the curriculum development model which was intended to overcome repeatedly identified deficiencies and policy implications arising from these findings.

An examination of the events leading to the development of the syllabus revealed a series of reports on the arts in education which all identified key deficiencies in primary music education and recommended :

• that specialist teachers be used in primary schools;

• that improved resources and facilities be provided for all schools;

• that all children have …

Management Of Small Mines, Sheikh Ateeq Ur Rahman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The main objectives of this thesis can be expressed as follows:

(i) To prove the importance of small-scale mining to the society and economy of a country,

(ii) Why and how to manage a small mine by using different approaches,

Small mines play an important role in the socio-economic system of a country. They also provide employment to the people of remote and backwaard areas. A Small scale mining industry, like tourism, is a major source of income in many countries around the world and can be a good source of foreign exchange. Historically, most large mines started on a …

An Interior Permanent Magnet Machine With Shaped Poles, Islam Md. Fakhrul Jan 1993

An Interior Permanent Magnet Machine With Shaped Poles, Islam Md. Fakhrul

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis presents the results of investigations into an interior permanent magnet (IPM) machine having characteristics which are superior to those available from an existing type. The improvements are made to a conventional IPM machine having radially mounted magnets on the direct axis, by shaping the rotor airgap profile. In the new machine the airgap length is gradually increased towards the quadrature axis in comparison to the airgap length along the direct axis. Finite element simulations show that a near sinusoidal distribution of airgap flux density due to the magnets can be achieved while reducing the quadrature axis inductance (Lq). …

Development Of A New Tunable/Adaptive Line Enhancer For Power System Harmonic Signal Retrieval, Haihong Wang Jan 1993

Development Of A New Tunable/Adaptive Line Enhancer For Power System Harmonic Signal Retrieval, Haihong Wang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis deals with Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) adaptive line enhancement and its application to the problem of power system harmonic signal retrieval. A new line enhancer structure is proposed and its parametisation is presented in Chapter 2. The new line enhancer is composed of two filter blocks. One of these is a phase matching filter while the other is a notch filter. The resulting line enhancer is optimal in the sense that it can cancel the broad-band noise entirely if the bandwidth is small enough. The characteristics of the proposed line enhancer are investigated and a simple design approach …

Design Of A Programmable Array Manipulator, Philip Ciufo Jan 1993

Design Of A Programmable Array Manipulator, Philip Ciufo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The Programmable Array Manipulator, or PAM, is a new technology designed to perform simultaneous manipulations on multiple objects. In its most primitive form, PAM is a matrix of actuators arranged in such a way that it may transport an object resting upon it. This transportation may be either a translation or a rotation. Such a device is currentiy under development at the University of WoUongong. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the methodology and implementation of the design factors associated with the prototype development of a PAM. Since PAM is a new device many issues need to be …

Dynamics Of Actuators In An Array Manipulator, Nick John Laszlo Jan 1993

Dynamics Of Actuators In An Array Manipulator, Nick John Laszlo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The objective of this thesis was to investigate the dynamics of a novel type of robot manipulator, known here as an array manipulator. These manipulators consist of a planar matrix of simple elements which work in concert to drive a workpiece to target positions on its surface. The outstanding feature of these manipulators is that they can move many objects to individual targets simultaneously and hence gain productivity enhancements through parallel processing. The dynamics of these manipulators have been investigated through the development of two computer models. The first model is generic; it predicts object motion due to the resultant …

Inter-Frame Subband Video Coding, Maliti Kelvin Chipango Jan 1993

Inter-Frame Subband Video Coding, Maliti Kelvin Chipango

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Three inter-frame subband video coding models are studied. The three models, referred to as models I, II and III, are studied by employing three different inter-frame predictive coding methods together with subband analysis/synthesis using separable twodimensional quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks. Models I and 11 use block matching and pel-recursive motion compensation whereas model III is based on a simple subband inter-frame difference coding scheme. Model I applies motion compensation to the full band image followed by subband analysis of the motion compensated prediction error. Model n applies subband analysis to the full band image and then uses motion compensated …

Changing The Public Attitude Towards Psychologists, Barry M. Mcnamara Jan 1993

Changing The Public Attitude Towards Psychologists, Barry M. Mcnamara

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The public attitude towards psychologists is, to say the least, somewhat ambivalent. Surveys of public attitude, both in Australia and internationally, have continually highlighted that the profession is poorly understood, its practitioners seen as impractical, its models of service delivery not "user friendly", its costs prohibitive and its perceived level of successful intervention dubious.

It is argued that many of these negative attitudes stem from the operation of stereotyping which, in turn, results from very low individual contact with psychologists combined with faulty media representations. Barriers to helpseeking that contribute to maintaining this low utilisation rate are discussed. Taken together, …

A Model Of Visual Discomfort And Its Implications For Efficient Reading Performance, Elizabeth Conlon Jan 1993

A Model Of Visual Discomfort And Its Implications For Efficient Reading Performance, Elizabeth Conlon

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Visual discomfort has been described as an extreme sensitivity to bright or intermittent light and some forms of repetitive pattern stimuli. This sensitivity can result in physical symptoms of eye-strain and headache and induction of anomalous perceptual features with exposure to pattern (Wilkins et al., 1984). The pattern percept produced by the lines of print on a page of text has been likened to the pattern of anomalous stripes which can induce unpleasant effects in sensitive individuals (Wilkins & Nimmo-Smith, 1987). This sensitivity is increased in observers who report regular headache or those who report eye-strain and headache when reading. …

Gender And Nation Formation In Late Nineteenth Century, Susan Elizabeth Rowley Jan 1993

Gender And Nation Formation In Late Nineteenth Century, Susan Elizabeth Rowley

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In the late nineteenth century, literary narratives and visual representations of the Australian bush played a major role in the historical process through which Australia was becoming conceptualised as a nation. This thesis examines features of these representations—the role of the journey, the portrayal of women's labour, the role of the swagman and of madness, the representation of motherhood, mateship and marriage, the scope and role of the imagination, and narratives of community—in there historical context. Using this analysis the thesis shows how the process of national cultural imagination was in part shaped by the experience at the time of …

A Transition-Turbulent Lubrication Theory And Its Application To Sector-Shaped Thrust Bearings, Kosasih Jan 1993

A Transition-Turbulent Lubrication Theory And Its Application To Sector-Shaped Thrust Bearings, Kosasih

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis contains a superlaminar* lubrication theory which is applicable in both transition and fully developed turbulent regimes. A theory which covers the superlaminar regime is necessary, as nowadays bearings operate beyond the laminar regime, and especially in the transition regime with the Reynolds number between 1000- 3000. The existing theories have adequately predicted the bearing performance in the fully turbulent regime, but they are not accurate for the transition regime analysis.

The theory described in this thesis has been derived from the study of boundary layer flow in channels which employs mixing length concept. In the experimental work, law …

Computer Aided Design Of Manufacturing Facilities, Palitha Sumeda Welgama Jan 1993

Computer Aided Design Of Manufacturing Facilities, Palitha Sumeda Welgama

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Manufacturing facilities design includes the determination of layout and materials handling system. An optimum facilities design improves the efficiency of manufacturing processes through reduction of materials handling cost. A comprehensive investigation into the use of computer aided techniques in manufacturing facilities design has been carried out during this research.

During the early stages of the study, a real-life industrial facilities design problem heavy manufacturing environment was analysed. This provided an insight into factors considered important in practice, yet ignored by computer aided models and algorithms in literature. The role of Monte-carlo simulation methodology in industrial facilities design was thoroughly investigated, …

Magnetic Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Adil Khizar Shaikh Jan 1993

Magnetic Properties Of Metallic Glasses, Adil Khizar Shaikh

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The response of a series of iron and cobalt-based metallic glasses to heat treatment has been examined in terms of the subsequent changes in magnetic properties. Annealing at temperatures below the crystallisation temperature improves the soft magnetic properties for low frequency applications by relief of stresses generated during rapid solidification. Annealing at higher temperatures improves the magnetic properties for higher frequency applications by introducing a small amount of crystals into the structure which refine the domain size and pin the domain walls, reducing excess eddy current loss.

Morphological Studies And Structure-Property Relationship Of Polypyrrole, Manish R. Gandhi Jan 1993

Morphological Studies And Structure-Property Relationship Of Polypyrrole, Manish R. Gandhi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Electrically conducting polymers, such as polypyrrole, are conveniently prepared by an electropolymerisation procedure in which the monomer is oxidised, polymerised and simultaneously deposited on the electrode surface. The polymer coating can be removed from the electrode and used in many different applications. The mechanical properties of electrochemically prepared polypyrrole is known to be dependent on the synthesis conditions.

The Effect Of Prestressing On The Inelastic (Creep) Behaviour Of Australian Made Bare Overhead Conductors, Michael David Drury Jan 1993

The Effect Of Prestressing On The Inelastic (Creep) Behaviour Of Australian Made Bare Overhead Conductors, Michael David Drury

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The creep behaviour of Australian manufactured bare overhead conductors was examined. The CIGRE proposed relationship for prestressing behaviour was assessed. A comprehensive literature survey yielded alternative experimental models and extensive amounts of creep constants for many conductor constructions.

19, 37 and 61 strand ACSR and AAAC/1120 conductors were tested. 1(X)0 hour creep tests were performed at tensile loads of 20, 30 and 40% of the NBL of the conductor at 20°C. Prestressing overloads of either 10 or 20% NBL were applied for periods of 1,2 or 7 days.

It was found that prestressing removed a considerable portion of the total …

The Effect Of Preheat On The Structure And Properties Of The Haz Of A Welded Quenched And Tempered Steel Plate, Sanjay G. Dani Jan 1993

The Effect Of Preheat On The Structure And Properties Of The Haz Of A Welded Quenched And Tempered Steel Plate, Sanjay G. Dani

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In the present research work the effect of preheat temperature (20°C, 80°C, 120°C, 2(X)°C) on cooling rate and consequently on the HAZ microstructures of bead - on - plate submerged arc welds have been investigated for quenched and tempered EM 812 plate steel. Due to the development of a microstructural gradient across the HAZ, it is difficult to carry out Charpy impact toughness testing on a particular structural region of the HAZ. Weld thermal cycle simulation has been conducted in the current work to reproduce in a bulk form similar microstructures to those in selected sub - regions of the …

Image Analysis Of A Pulsating Vapour Bubble, Steven Brian Harvey Jan 1993

Image Analysis Of A Pulsating Vapour Bubble, Steven Brian Harvey

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A technique is presented that enables flow quantities such as the pressure, surface velocity potential and normal surface velocity of a single vapour bubble evolving near a rigid boundary to be determined unobtrusively from its shape history. To achieve this, high-speed ciné film images of the bubble's motion are digitally analysed and the normal surface velocity determined. Application of the boundary integral method enables the potential field, and by use of the Bernoulli equation the pressure field, to be recreated.

Mathematical Model For The Mass Transfer Of Ozone Into Water Systems, Phillip Craig Wright Jan 1993

Mathematical Model For The Mass Transfer Of Ozone Into Water Systems, Phillip Craig Wright

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this work a mathematical model initially developed for a counter-current bubble column gas-liquid contactor was examined. The model was developed by a lumped parameter approach to mass transfer with chemical reaction occurring completely within the liquid phase. ' An extensive literature review was carried out on gas-liquid mass transfer and in particular ozone-water mass transfer in co-current down flow. There are large gaps in the literature on this phenomenon, which indicated the need for this kind of study. The mathematical model was applied to study the behaviour of a jet pump contactor. Limited experimentation was carried out to examine …

Strategies For Reduced Pollution Caused Gaseous Emission From Coal Fired Power Stations In Australia, Liu De-Ying Jan 1993

Strategies For Reduced Pollution Caused Gaseous Emission From Coal Fired Power Stations In Australia, Liu De-Ying

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

For the improvement of Australian and world environment the Australian Government has already set a target to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, not controlled by the Montreal Protocol on ozone depleting substances, to 1988 levels by the year 2000 and to further reduce those emissions by 20% by the year 2005. The need to control the emission of pollution gases is an issue of major economic, social and political consequence. In particular the use of coal in power generation contributes greatly to pollution gases, mainly carbon dioxide, in addition to nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, which influence …
