Some Analytical Applications Of Chemically Modified Electrodes, Peter John Riley Jan 1993

Some Analytical Applications Of Chemically Modified Electrodes, Peter John Riley

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The continued advancement of electrochemical sensing is inextricably linked with the development of modified electrodes. New preconcentration schemes, utilising analyteelectrode interactions not normally employed in conventional sensors, open up a number of potential applications for these electrodes. One flexible route to the generation of electrode modifiers is through the use of electrochemically generated polymers to functionalise the electrode surface.

This work has investigated the use of a number of monomers for electrode modification. Monomers studied include pyrrole, thiophene, 3-methylthiophene, 2,2'-bithiophene, Nethyltyramine and 4-vinylpyridine. The electrochemical generation of polymers from these monomers was studied and those found to deposit as reproducible …

Characterization Of The Chemical Properties Of Polypyrrole And Polyaniline, Peter R. Teasdale Jan 1993

Characterization Of The Chemical Properties Of Polypyrrole And Polyaniline, Peter R. Teasdale

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Recent interest in investigating the chemical interactions that occur at new materials, such as conducting polymers, has been limited by the few suitable in-situ characterization techniques that are available. The primary objective of this thesis was to address this deficiency by using existing, and developing new, techniques to investigate the chemical properties of polypyrrole and polyaniline. The two main techniques used were Wilhelmy's plate technique and inverse thin layer chromatography.

Wilhelmy's plate technique measures dynamic contact angles and was useful for comparing the total interaction that occurs between the conducting polymer interface and water. Information on the wettability of the …

Electrochemically Controlled Transport Across Conducting Electroactive Polypyrrole Membranes, Huijun Zhao Jan 1993

Electrochemically Controlled Transport Across Conducting Electroactive Polypyrrole Membranes, Huijun Zhao

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A new membrane system, electrochemically controlled transport across conducting electroactive polypyrrole membranes has been demonstrated. This work describes the synthesis and characterisation of free-standing polypyrrole membranes, and their use for electrochemically controlled transport. This new membrane system is novel and exciting as it utilises the unique feature of electroactive polypyrrole resulting in dynamic controllable separations.

A range of free-standing polypyrrole membranes containing a series of sulfonated counterions have been successfully synthesised, by a range of methods including mixed counterions and multi-layer polymerisation.

The properties of the polypyrrole membranes were characterised using numerous techniques. The data indicated that ali membranes investigated …

The Development Of A Chemically-Modified Mercury Thin Film Electrode For Electroanalysis, Mark David Imisides Jan 1993

The Development Of A Chemically-Modified Mercury Thin Film Electrode For Electroanalysis, Mark David Imisides

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The purpose of this project was to develop a chemically-modified mercury thin film electrode (MTFE) for use in the determination of trace metais from aqueous solutions by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) in both quiescent and flowing solutions.

The CME (chemically-modified electrode) consists of a non-conducting polymer, poly-N-ethyltyramine (p-NET), coated onto a glassy carbon substrate, which was used with dithiocarbamate (dtc) groups grafted onto the polymeric amine groups. The complexing capabilities of the dithiocarbamate groups were used to provide a substrate for the formation of a chemically deposited mercury thin film electrode (MTFE) via complexation of mercuric ions at these sites. …
