Effects Of Contrasting Dispersal Strategies On Populations Of Two Species Of Intertidal Starfish: Patiriella Calcar And Patiriella Exigua, Alison Hunt Jan 1993

Effects Of Contrasting Dispersal Strategies On Populations Of Two Species Of Intertidal Starfish: Patiriella Calcar And Patiriella Exigua, Alison Hunt

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Despite the importance of dispersal in regulating patterns of gene flow, there are still major gaps in our knowledge of the consequences of many dispersal strategies for the genetic structure of marine populations. Until recently, most of our knowledge was based on studies which had investigated sexually reproducing species with the potential for wide dispersal of planktonic larvae. Relatively few studies have concentrated on intertidal species which lack a clear means of dispersal.

This study used ecological and genetic techniques to investigate the consequences of restricted dispersal for marine intertidal populations, and to provide an important comparison for two closely …

Body Size, Cell Membranes And Tissue Metabolism In Mammals, Patrice Couture Jan 1993

Body Size, Cell Membranes And Tissue Metabolism In Mammals, Patrice Couture

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The relationship between body size and the rate of basal metabolism in mammals is the holistic basis of this thesis. In particular, the work presented investigates the relationships between body size, cell membrane phospholipid fatty acid composition, tissue metabolism and sodium pump activity. The species chosen were mouse, rat, rabbit, sheep and cattle, representing a 12 000-fold difference in body weight.

Heart, skeletal muscle and kidney cortex of larger mammals had less polyunsaturated membrane phospholipids than those of smaller mammals. The proportions of the various polyunsaturated fatty acids in heart, skeletal muscle and kidney cortex allowed to propose that the …

Dietary Fats And Exercise, Kerry Jean Ayre Jan 1993

Dietary Fats And Exercise, Kerry Jean Ayre

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Despite the great importance of lipids in many biological functions, little is known about the effects of different types of fats on muscle composition and physical performance. In this study, the levels of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diets of male rats were manipulated in order to determine whether the composition of skeletal muscle membranes would be altered and if so, the function of isolated skeletal muscles and whole animal performance.

Three isocaloric diets (providing 10% fat), were developed. An essential fatty acid deficient (EFAD) diet contained 1 % n - 6 and 0.2% n - 3 fatty acids; …

Some Analytical Applications Of Chemically Modified Electrodes, Peter John Riley Jan 1993

Some Analytical Applications Of Chemically Modified Electrodes, Peter John Riley

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The continued advancement of electrochemical sensing is inextricably linked with the development of modified electrodes. New preconcentration schemes, utilising analyteelectrode interactions not normally employed in conventional sensors, open up a number of potential applications for these electrodes. One flexible route to the generation of electrode modifiers is through the use of electrochemically generated polymers to functionalise the electrode surface.

This work has investigated the use of a number of monomers for electrode modification. Monomers studied include pyrrole, thiophene, 3-methylthiophene, 2,2'-bithiophene, Nethyltyramine and 4-vinylpyridine. The electrochemical generation of polymers from these monomers was studied and those found to deposit as reproducible …

Tryptophan Metabolism In The Human Lens, Andrew Martin Wood Jan 1993

Tryptophan Metabolism In The Human Lens, Andrew Martin Wood

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The aim of this thesis was to discover more about the pathway in the human lens which leads to the formation of 3-hydroxykynurenine glucoside, the major UV-filter substance. This biosynthetic pathway has received scant attention since the discovery of the glucoside by van Heyningen in 1971.

In order to further examine the unique metabolism of tryptophan in human lenses, an intact lens organ culture system was employed. Radiolabelled tryptophan was added to the artificial aqueous humor of organ cultured-lenses and its incorporation was followed by analysis of the low molecular weight lens fraction by high pressure liquid chromatography and liquid …

Dynamic Investigation Of Semi-Rigid Tubular T-Joints, Iraj Hoshyari Jan 1993

Dynamic Investigation Of Semi-Rigid Tubular T-Joints, Iraj Hoshyari

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Offshore structures are fabricated from tubes or circular hollow sections. Tubular joints which are created at the intersection of the circular members experience complicated structural problems such as stress concentration, ultimate strength, joint stiffness and fatigue life. Some aspects of tubular T-joints regarding joint stiffness and stress concentration are investigated in this thesis. The methods employed in these investigations are based on dynamic theoretical and experimental modelling techniques.

Semi-rigidity of tubular joints leads to different results when compared with the common assumption of rigid joint analysis. However, due to the lack of an efficient modelling method, tubular joints are still …

Predicting Daily Runoff Using Catchment Water Balance Models With Stochastic Data, Aminuddin Bin Baki Jan 1993

Predicting Daily Runoff Using Catchment Water Balance Models With Stochastic Data, Aminuddin Bin Baki

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In water resources design, a long record of runoff is desirable in order that many possible runoff variations occur, including flooding and extreme droughts. However, available runoff records are usually short in length. Records of daily rainfall are much longer compared to runoff records. If long runoff records are required, several methods can be used including: stochastic runoff data generation; and stochastic rainfall data generation followed by the use of this rainfall data in rainfall-runoff models to generate runoff data. This latter approach was adopted in this research because more variations of rainfall and runoff conditions could be included due …

A Hypertext Based Intelligent Assistant For Courseware Preparation: A Step Toward Authoring Shells, Abdolhossein Sarrafzadeh Jan 1993

A Hypertext Based Intelligent Assistant For Courseware Preparation: A Step Toward Authoring Shells, Abdolhossein Sarrafzadeh

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Existing intelligent tutoring systems are mostly academic prototypes built for research purposes. The main reason for this is that they are time consuming and expensive to build. Another reason is that there are no tools that can be used for building such systems for teachers who usually are not programmers. In this study we have proposed authoring shells as a tool for building intelligent tutoring systems to be used as a goal for research in this area. As a step toward authoring shells, we have designed and implemented a hypertext based intelligent assistant (IACP) for developing courseware meant for use …

Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Servo Motor With Sixteen Poles, S. Geetha Jan 1993

Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Servo Motor With Sixteen Poles, S. Geetha

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The intention of this project is to design, build, analyse and test a novel form of servo motor. Axial flux permanent magnet machines are highly suitable for servo motors because of their very high torque to inertia ratio. These machine have axial flux geometry. That is, the rotor and stators are formed as discs rather than drums as is the case for conventional machines. This project deals with the development and analysis of a high performance axial flux permanent magnet servo motor using Neodymium-Iron-Boron permanent magnets.

Special problems which arise due to the geometry and high pole number of the …

British Policy And The 'Development' Of Tibet 1912-1933, Heather Spence Jan 1993

British Policy And The 'Development' Of Tibet 1912-1933, Heather Spence

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Two conflicting views of Tibet's political status in relation to China have dominated both popular and scholarly literature. The 'pro-Chinese' school views Tibet as a traditional, integral part of China. Tibet, they maintain, was separated from China after the fall of the Manchu dynasty as a consequence of British machinations. Tibet was justifiably reunited with China, the 'motherland', in 1951. The 'pro-Tibetan' school argues that the partnership was between the Dalai Lama and the Manchus: that relationship ended with the collapse of the Manchu dynasty. Accordingly, Tibet is seen as an independent state conquered by the Chinese Communists and illegally …

The Relationship Between Performance, Environment, Control And Strategy In The Australian General Insurance Industry: A Multiple Case Study, Gregory Kenneth Laing

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study posits that in an organisational context, a contingent relationship exists between the variables of performance, environment, control and strategy. A random sample of general insurance companies was initially contacted by telephone. Utilising a contingency framework and the Miles & Snow (1978) strategic typology, three companies, identified as a "prospector", a "defender" and an "analyser", participated in this study. Data for the three case studies was collected from executive officers and other staff using an indepth survey, questionnaires and interviews. Analysis disclosed that the firm representing the "prospector" type out-performed the other firms. This was surprising given the findings …

Strength And Deformation Behaviour Of Precast Beam-Column Connections For Reinforced Concrete Building Frames, Yao Bao-Zhong

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Connection design is one of the most important considerations for the successful construction of precast concrete strnctures. The configuration details of the connection affect the strength, stability, ductility as well as load redistribution of the structure under load.

This thesis presents a study of strength and deformation behaviour of beam-column connections in precast reinforced concrete building frames. Six half-scale frame specimens were designed, built and tested in the structural laboratory to evaluate the properties of precast concrete frames. These included two pairs of precast frame specimens with two different types of connections and two monolithic frame specimens. The sizes, reinforcing …

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the methodology and implementation of the design factors associated with the prototype development of a PAM. Since PAM is a new device many issues need to be …

Morphological Studies And Structure-Property Relationship Of Polypyrrole, Manish R. Gandhi Jan 1993

Morphological Studies And Structure-Property Relationship Of Polypyrrole, Manish R. Gandhi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Electrically conducting polymers, such as polypyrrole, are conveniently prepared by an electropolymerisation procedure in which the monomer is oxidised, polymerised and simultaneously deposited on the electrode surface. The polymer coating can be removed from the electrode and used in many different applications. The mechanical properties of electrochemically prepared polypyrrole is known to be dependent on the synthesis conditions.

Simulation Of The Indentation Of Metals, Warren Geoffrey Crouch Jan 1993

Simulation Of The Indentation Of Metals, Warren Geoffrey Crouch

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Metals are among the most widely used structural materials known to man, and in many applications, the key to their usefulness is their unique combination of mechanical properties. The test most commonly used to determine the mechanical properties of metals is the indentation hardness test in which an indenter of a specified shape is forced into the surface of the specimen under carefully controlled conditions. Measurements made of the impression remaining after the indenter is removed are used to calculate a hardness number which is an indicator of the mechanical properties of the specimen.

The Effect Of Prestressing On The Inelastic (Creep) Behaviour Of Australian Made Bare Overhead Conductors, Michael David Drury Jan 1993

The Effect Of Prestressing On The Inelastic (Creep) Behaviour Of Australian Made Bare Overhead Conductors, Michael David Drury

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The creep behaviour of Australian manufactured bare overhead conductors was examined. The CIGRE proposed relationship for prestressing behaviour was assessed. A comprehensive literature survey yielded alternative experimental models and extensive amounts of creep constants for many conductor constructions.

19, 37 and 61 strand ACSR and AAAC/1120 conductors were tested. 1(X)0 hour creep tests were performed at tensile loads of 20, 30 and 40% of the NBL of the conductor at 20°C. Prestressing overloads of either 10 or 20% NBL were applied for periods of 1,2 or 7 days.

It was found that prestressing removed a considerable portion of the total …

The Effects Of Alloying Additions On The Microstructure And Corrosion Properties Of An Al-Zn Galvanizing Alloy, David James Nolan Jan 1993

The Effects Of Alloying Additions On The Microstructure And Corrosion Properties Of An Al-Zn Galvanizing Alloy, David James Nolan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The effects of minor additions on the micro structure and mechanical and corrosion behaviour of ZINCALUME (Zn-55%Al-1.6%Si) coatings are reported. Magnesium (0.1-2.5%), calcium (0.1-0.5%), gallium (0.05-1.0%) and copper (0.05-1.0%) additions were made singly to the ZINCALUME alloy and coatings with controlled mass were produced. Such coatings were used to analyse microstructural effects (using optical and scanning electron microscopy), mechanical properties (using microhardness measurement and visual estimation of the severity of coating cracking on bending deformation) and corrosion properties (using a humidifed salt spray test and outdoor exposure). It is found that magnesium additions segregate to the zinc-rich interdendritic regions, forming …

Image Analysis Of A Pulsating Vapour Bubble, Steven Brian Harvey Jan 1993

Image Analysis Of A Pulsating Vapour Bubble, Steven Brian Harvey

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A technique is presented that enables flow quantities such as the pressure, surface velocity potential and normal surface velocity of a single vapour bubble evolving near a rigid boundary to be determined unobtrusively from its shape history. To achieve this, high-speed ciné film images of the bubble's motion are digitally analysed and the normal surface velocity determined. Application of the boundary integral method enables the potential field, and by use of the Bernoulli equation the pressure field, to be recreated.

Mathematical Model For The Mass Transfer Of Ozone Into Water Systems, Phillip Craig Wright Jan 1993

Mathematical Model For The Mass Transfer Of Ozone Into Water Systems, Phillip Craig Wright

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this work a mathematical model initially developed for a counter-current bubble column gas-liquid contactor was examined. The model was developed by a lumped parameter approach to mass transfer with chemical reaction occurring completely within the liquid phase. ' An extensive literature review was carried out on gas-liquid mass transfer and in particular ozone-water mass transfer in co-current down flow. There are large gaps in the literature on this phenomenon, which indicated the need for this kind of study. The mathematical model was applied to study the behaviour of a jet pump contactor. Limited experimentation was carried out to examine …
