Using Curriculum-Based Measurement In The Assessment Of Reading Disabilities, Jessica Menard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present investigation looked at students’ reading achievement within the context of the Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) intervention. It consisted of three separate studies, all of which are related to reading achievement and intervention during the early years of school. The purpose of Study One was to determine whether students who are identified with reading disabilities via psychological assessment report make improvements over the school year subsequent to the implementation of this report. It was hypothesized that when teachers have access to psychological assessment reports, they will better understand their students’ individual learning needs and that this will translate …
A Mixed Methods Examination Of The Influence Of Social Culture On Perceptions Of Culturally Adaptive Behaviours And Trustworthiness In Work Settings, Iris Yu-Yi Lin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A mixed-methods approach was used to assess the role of trustworthiness in cross-cultural business partnerships. In Study One, qualitative responses from 100 undergraduate students (50 Canadian, 50 Taiwanese) were analyzed to identify cultural similarities and differences in their perceptions of a trustworthy person, employee, and supervisor/employer. Respondents from both countries used descriptors that fit the ability, benevolence, and integrity framework to describe trustworthy individuals. However, comparison between countries and between targets (i.e., person, employee, supervisor/employer) revealed differences in the frequency with which certain types of descriptors were used. Additionally, dimensions of trustworthiness not included in the ability, benevolence, and integrity …
Emotional Responses Following Sports-Related Concussion; A Pilot Study With Controls, Eva Keatley
Emotional Responses Following Sports-Related Concussion; A Pilot Study With Controls, Eva Keatley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mild traumatic brain injury is associated with new onset emotional symptoms (Caroll et al., 2014; Konrad et al., 2011). This study will address a gap in the literature by examining the relationship between mTBI, autonomic arousal, and emotional symptoms in the acute phase of a concussion in athletes. In this pilot study, skin conduction and heart rate changes in response to emotional stimuli were measured in 25 undergraduate controls. Results indicate that emotional valence of facial expressions did not elicit the expected differential physiological responses as suggested by previous research, but habituation to an acoustic startle over repeated exposures was …

Investigations Into The Regulation Of The Redox Activity Of Protein Disulfide Isomerase By Active Site-Flanking Lysines, Hyder Ali Khan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is crucial in the redox of disulfide bonds, where it catalyzes reductase, oxidase, and isomerase activity. The active site motif for PDI is CXXC, which is found in the a and a’ domain. PDI is mainly localized to the endoplasmic reticulum, where it plays a key role in the folding of new proteins through proper disulfide formation. With new studies about the regulation of protein activity by lysine acetylation, our group wished investigate this post-translational modification on PDI. Flanking each active site motif of PDI is a lysine residue. These active site-flanking lysine residues were mutated …
Finding Nemo's Place In A Complex Animal Society: An Exploration Of The Behavioural And Hormonal Correlates Of Dominance In Amphiprion Ocellaris, Eugene Cheung
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Exploration of the mechanisms underlying conflict resolution has been key to our understanding of the dynamics driving the formation and organization of complex animal societies. This thesis examines the role of aggression and individual variation on dominance hierarchies and the correlates of expression of cortisol, 11-ketotestosterone, and testosterone on individual social status in novel size-matched Amphiprion ocellaris dominance hierarchies. Here, I report that greater aggressiveness relays higher dominance status during hierarchy establishment, as well as during experimental recruitment of highly aggressive smaller individuals into established groups. Additionally, I show that cortisol expression profiles are related to social status in both …

Acoustic And Visual Signals Of Species Discrimination In Competing Neotropical Wrens, Kristina Hick
Acoustic And Visual Signals Of Species Discrimination In Competing Neotropical Wrens, Kristina Hick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Animals must discriminate between individuals within their own species, and between individuals of their own species and individuals of competitor species, allowing animals to differentiate between threatening rivals, non-threatening individuals, and potential mates. Studying two competing neotropical wren species, I tested the influence of experience on species discrimination using acoustic playback. Contrary to my predictions, the playback experiment showed that species discrimination was not influenced by previous experience with a competitor species. I also studied the relative importance of acoustic and visual signals for intra- and interspecific discrimination using playback combined with presentation of visual models. The playback-and-model-presentation experiment showed …

Linking Climate, Arthropod Emergence, And Fitness In Snow Buntings (Plectrophenax Nivalis), Peter Joseph Marier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Arctic ecosystems are facing some of the most severe and variable climatic impacts due to climate change. We examined the impact of this climatic variation on arthropod abundance and phenology, and how these relationships impact reproductive decisions and fitness in an Arctic-breeding passerine, the snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) using a seven-year dataset from the low Canadian Arctic. Intra- and inter-annual climate-based models yielded significant variation in predictive capacity of arthropod emergence and abundance, limiting their hind- and fore-casting use. At the population level, snow bunting laying decisions appeared constrained by spring temperatures and laying did not appear timed to match …

The Roles Of Individual Variation And Female Choice In Round Goby (Neogobius Melanostomus) Acoustic Signalling, Meghan Donovan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Acoustic signalling in teleost fishes serves a variety of communicatory purposes, mostly centered around aggression and courtship. There is strong evidence that courtship calls are used by many fishes to locate mates, coordinate spawning, and for species recognition, but the possibility that these calls also act as honest signals is not yet highly explored. Calls produced by the male round goby, Neogobius melanostomus, were analyzed for dominant frequency, interpulse interval, duration and number of pulses in the call. Call characteristics were then analyzed for relationships to body morphometrics of total length, head width, total weight, and gonadosomatic index. Strong interactive …

This thesis also examined the relationship between genetic and gamete quality in a strain used in the Lake Ontario restoration effort. Although negative correlations were found between heterozygosity and sperm velocity and longevity, the …
Genetic, Environmental, And Behavioural Factors Underlying Differential Growth And Alternative Reproductive Tactics In Chinook Salmon, Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha., Adriana Forest
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) in salmonids are influenced by differential growth amongst individuals. In Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, males develop into large “hooknose” males and smaller, precocious “jacks.” The production of jacks is influenced by genetics, environment, and possibly behaviour (i.e., aggression). I examined genetic, environmental, and behavioural factors underlying ARTs in Chinook salmon. By using a full-factorial breeding design, I found that jacking rate was explained by negative maternal, 12% additive, and 0% non-additive effects. I found that dams originating from low performance genetic lines produced families with higher jacking rates. I found that both rearing environment and sire …

Bioenergetics Modeling To Assess Aquatic Invasive Species Trophic Impact, Nickolas John Kosmenko
Bioenergetics Modeling To Assess Aquatic Invasive Species Trophic Impact, Nickolas John Kosmenko
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Energy requirements of aquatic invasive species (AIS) relative to native species may help explain differences in trophic impact, as species requiring more energy must consume more food, depleting resources more quickly. Variables relating to energy use were compared between co-existing invasive and native fish species in invaded habitats. Most comparisons (8/12) demonstrated higher rates in invasive species (1-46% greater), suggesting high trophic impact is a characteristic of AIS and should be of consideration in management. Bioenergetic mass-balance principles indicate energy consumed by a fish is offset by metabolic (~40%), waste (~30%), and growth (~30%) demands. Since routine metabolic rate data …
