Legislative Recommendations On Biometric Security And Privacy Jurisprudence, Joshua M. Morrow

All Student Scholarship

This project focuses on the prevalence of biometrics today, their various applications, and the biometric laws and legislations in place in the United States (U.S.) and Maine. Due to various threats and vulnerabilities imposing risk on collecting and using peoples’ biometric data, sufficient cyber protections related to citizens’ privacy rights, ethical control, and security of personally identifiable information (PII) must become necessary components of contemporary biometric laws and legislation. Without such explicit cyber protections, citizens participate in and comply with various technical domains and entities, such as private companies and governmental agencies, with minimal awareness or comprehension that their sensitive …

Neonicotinoid pesticides are used worldwide due to their effectiveness in protecting crops from pests like aphids, thrips, moths, flies, and beetles. These insecticides are applied on surfaces or absorbed systemically by plants, where insects encounter them through contact or ingestion. While beneficial for agriculture, they also negatively impact nontarget species. Numerous studies have reported the inhibitory effects of sublethal exposure to neonicotinoid-based insecticides on nontarget insects, especially pollinators such as bees, flies, and beetles. While research has demonstrated the toxicity of neonicotinoids, most studies have focused on low-energy activities such as walking or resting. In this research, I examined the …

Investigating Vital Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Pathogen Response In Neutropenic Individuals, Ryan Illig Apr 2024

Investigating Vital Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Pathogen Response In Neutropenic Individuals, Ryan Illig

Thinking Matters Symposium

Neutrophils, also called polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), constitute the majority of innate immune cells. These cells possess a complex arsenal of functions that allow them to detect and eliminate a broad spectrum of pathogens. Neutropenia is characterized by decreased levels of neutrophils in the bloodstream, typically falling below the normal range. Moderate to severe neutropenia can increase the risk of pathogenic infections and without treatment can be life-threatening. Although the concentration of neutrophils in neutropenic individuals is decreased, upon activation, neutrophils still release neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). NETs are pivotal in combating a spectrum of pathogens through their non-selective nature. Overreactive …

Social Justice With Children's Literature, Victoria Bradford Apr 2024

Social Justice With Children's Literature, Victoria Bradford

Thinking Matters Symposium

An increase in refugee children arriving in the United States is driving innovation in elementary education strategies that focus on the role of children’s attitudes and behaviors concerning inclusivity to cultivate warm regard for refugees and immigrants. In 2017, anti-immigrant sentiments rose sharply alongside waves of nationalism reinforcing ethnic divisions across America, negatively impacting children of color who were frequently told, "go back to where you came from," even if they were born in the United States. Multicultural children's literature, in which commonalities between diverse characters are emphasized, is considered an effective way to expose children to other cultures, thereby …
