Children's Rights And Education In Argentina, Chile And Spain, David Poveda, Viviana Gómez, Claudia Messina
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This article is a first attempt to relate the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to education policy. It compares three countries, Argentina, Chile and Spain in an attempt to both present particular problems that are of pressing concern in each and to propose a framework that might reveal some possible obstacles to the implementation of children's rights. ...

Grade Inflation Rates Among Different Ability Students, Controlling For Other Factors, Stephanie Mcspirit, Kirk E. Jones
Grade Inflation Rates Among Different Ability Students, Controlling For Other Factors, Stephanie Mcspirit, Kirk E. Jones
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This study compares grade inflation rates among different ability students at a large, open admissions public University. Specifically, this study compares trends in graduating grade point average (GPA) from 1983 to 1996 across low, typical and higher ability students. This study also tests other explanations for increases in graduating GPA. These other explanations are changes in 1) ACT score 2) gender 3) college major and 4) vocational programs. ...

Diet Preference, Competition And Learning In A Cloud Forest Hummingbird Community, September 1999, Meg Seifert, Ambrose Tuscano
Diet Preference, Competition And Learning In A Cloud Forest Hummingbird Community, September 1999, Meg Seifert, Ambrose Tuscano
Tropical Ecology and Conservation [Monteverde Institute]
The purpose of this study was to determine hummingbird preference between protein and higher sugar concentrations, and how any preference affects competition and memory. We hung three sets of three feeders in triangular patterns and observed hummingbird visits and interactions. We also, noted solitary feedings on the days directly following both site establishment and feeder rotation. Our results showed that there was an overall preference for the feeder with higher sugar concentration, that larger species and newcomers were generally dominant and that birds did not take longer to learn the values of established leaders that had been rotated than feeders …
Outcrossing Mechanisms In Columnea Microcalyx (Gesneriaceae), September 1999, Alise Baer
Outcrossing Mechanisms In Columnea Microcalyx (Gesneriaceae), September 1999, Alise Baer
Tropical Ecology and Conservation [Monteverde Institute]
Protandry has been known to promote outcrossing in many species of plants (Lloyd & Webb 1986, in Endress 1994), but in asynchronously flowering plants other mechanisms are needed to reinforce outcrossing (Endress 1994). This study investigates the flowering system of Columnea microcalyx (Gesneriaceae) to determine what mechanisms the plant may be using to promote outcrossing. Nectar production, floral characteristics, and the effects of pollination on nectar production were measured in 36 flowers of C. microcalyx. It was found that C. microcalyx flowers are protandrous; they open asynchronously on a plant and have delayed nectar production. It was also found that …

Cinderella's Social Transformations, Rosemary Lutz
Cinderella's Social Transformations, Rosemary Lutz
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
The tale of Cinderella has made its way around the world for centuries, yet this highly recognizable plot continues to be a popular contemporary theme: a young girl cast into suffering, treated maliciously, and subjected to privation eventually is summoned to a regal existence. We easily identify the Cinderella character even in the guise of a mermaid in the film Splash; as a factory worker, who lives in a dull and lifeless town which replaces Cinderella's traditional ashen hearth, in An Officer and a Gentleman; or as a prostitute whose trick turns out to be Prince Charming in Pretty Woman. …

Literacy, Technology, And Change: The Gates Of Hell, Janice R. Walker
Literacy, Technology, And Change: The Gates Of Hell, Janice R. Walker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I first briefly examine the history of technology as it impacts on literacy practices, and especially the history of resistance to technological developments in the humanities. In so doing, I also briefly examine some of the possible ideological underpinnings of this resistance, including looking at some of the arguments proposed to counter it. More specifically, I consider how literacy practices, pedagogical practices, and assessment and gatekeeping practices in the field of composition studies impact on and are impacted by the intersection of computer technologies and our field. Finally, I offer some suggestions for ways in which our …

Teachers In Charter Schools And Traditional Schools: A Comparative Study, Sally Bomotti, Rick Ginsberg, Brian Cobb
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Teachers from charter and traditional schools in Colorado were queried about their perceptions of their level of empowerment, school climate, and working conditions. Using a cluster sampling design, approximately 100 teachers from 16 charter schools and 100 teachers from seven traditional schools were surveyed by combining several well-established instruments to measure empowerment, school climate, and working conditions. ...

Facing The Consequences: Identifying The Limitations Of How We Categorize People In Research And Policy, Cynthia Wallat, Carolyn Steele
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Social policy researchers and policy rules and regulation writers have not taken advantage of advances in assessing ways in which social representations of ideas about people can convey alternative explanations of social life. During the past decade a growing number of scholars have considered how representational practices and the representations that are outcomes of such practices have value. Neglecting to consider representational practices has consequences including failure to mobilize and sustain alternative ideologies that reject narrow perspectives on families and communities. ...
