Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell Apr 1967

Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell

Master's Theses

A general study of Marlowe 's cosmology may by no means be original, for numerous critics have mentioned the subject in varying degrees; however, there is a wide disparity or opinion concerning the relative importance of the subject in relation to the playwright. This study is not exhaustive; it is significant, however, because it attempts to prove by means of biographical and historical backgrounds the idea that Marlowe had an intellect that was always "climbing after knowledge infinite."

In this study there are two obvious omissions: the plays Dido, Queen of Carthage, and The Massacre at Paris. …

A Comparative Study Of The Parasite Of Certain Salientia From Pocahontas State Park, Virginia, Ronald Arthur Campbell

Master's Theses

Four species of salientia representing three selected habitats were collected from May 5th through October 4th, 1966 and examined for parasites. Of the 116 host specimens, 30 were Rana catesbeiana Shaw; 29 clamitans Latreille; 29 Bufo fowleri Hinckley; 28 Hyla versicolor (Le Conte). A total of 34 species of parasites was recovered: Protozoa, 10; Trematoda, 9 ; Cestoda, 2; Nematoda, 11; Acanthocephala, 1; and Acarina, 1.

Although a relatively small number of hosts was examined , the results generally agree with those found in more extensive investigations of similar type. The aquatic hosts, R. catesbeiana and R. clamitans, harbored the …

The Use Of Facts And Verbal, Affect, And Content Clues In Clinical Judgements From Interviews, Nicholas Charles Anthony Apr 1967

The Use Of Facts And Verbal, Affect, And Content Clues In Clinical Judgements From Interviews, Nicholas Charles Anthony

Master's Theses

The clinical psychologist, experienced social worker, psychiatrist, and others, whose professions involve dealing with people who are experiencing life-problems, are frequently called upon to make judgements about these people. The basis of these judgements are almost always partially formed from interviews with the people they they must judge. The interviewers form their judgements from different cues that the clients communicate to them during these interviews. The cues employed to form these judgements that have thus far been differentiated and investigated are visual, verbal, and content cues. This study is concerned with the latter two.

Background Similarity-Dissimilarity, Interpersonal Attraction And Change In Confidence, Lewis J. Levine

Master's Theses

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of background similarity-dissimilarity on interpersonal attraction and on changing one's confidence in his own judgment. The hypotheses were as follows:

1. A stranger with a similar background to that of the S will be better liked (i.e., more attractive) than a dissimilar stranger.

2. Agreement by another person (regard less of whether he is similar or dissimilar in background) will in crease one's certainty of judgment about a particular issue.

3. Disagreement by another person (regardless of whether he is a similar or dissimilar otheii will decrease one' a certainty …

The Retention Of Tactile Stimulation With Young And Elderly Adults, Sally Baker Canestrari

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to test the retention of sensory experience in the modality of light-touch with both young and elderly subjects. Based on previous literature, it is expected that young Ss will be able to maintain more accurately the light-touch impression for a long delay period (two weeks) than older persons. The test for retention or the impression will be made immediately (two minutes) following the stimulation for one-half the Ss, and after two week a for the remaining Ss.

Herbert's Household Imagery, Christina Hillquist Halsted Apr 1967

Herbert's Household Imagery, Christina Hillquist Halsted

Master's Theses

The apparent simplicity of George Herbert's poetry has caused much comment and much misunderstanding of both the man and his poetry. The popular nineteenth-century picture of Herbert as the simple, tranquil country priest is being discarded, however, as twentieth-century scholars of metaphysical poetry re-exa mine both the works and life of George Herbert and find little simple about his life and a magnificent craftsmanship in his poetry.

Both the simplicity and the depth of Herbert's poetry lie in his imagery, in which concrete everyday objects and actions become high abstractions usually difficult to express. Of course, the presentation of abstractions …

Under God? : A Study Of Freedom Of Religion, The Founding Fathers, The Supreme Court, And The Schools, Alice Sofis Evangelides Apr 1967

Under God? : A Study Of Freedom Of Religion, The Founding Fathers, The Supreme Court, And The Schools, Alice Sofis Evangelides

Master's Theses

The first part of my study concerns the meaning of "religious freedom" as revealed through the fundamental laws of the Constitutional period. In the course of my research, I have compiled and noted every mention of religion in the State Constitutions and Bills of Rights drafted between 1776 and 1791. I have read the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and the Northwest Ordinance; the Debates in the Constitutional Convention, the State Ratifying Conventions, and the First Congress, and extracted every significant mention of religion. I have not looked behind the words to the actual prac tice, but rather to …

Alexander Moseley, Editor Of The Richmond Whig, Harrison Moseley Ethridge Apr 1967

Alexander Moseley, Editor Of The Richmond Whig, Harrison Moseley Ethridge

Master's Theses

The following pages are the study or a man, Alexander Moseley, and of the newspaper with which he was intimately connected for forty-tive years

There are, admittedly gaps in the study. The period of Know-Knothingism is omitted, for example, because no substantial material could be found to show his associations during the era. At other times, much more material could be found concerning Moseley's personal life than on his public life. And, of course, often it is difficult to prove that an editorial opinion was necessarily his.

Alexander Moseley's career was unique, however, in the great span of history it …

Some General Observations On Mass Composition In The Renaissance, Charles Lathan Hill Apr 1967

Some General Observations On Mass Composition In The Renaissance, Charles Lathan Hill

Honors Theses

As seen in the six Masses studied in this paper, the composition of a Mass presented a Renaissance composer with both problems and opportunities. Some of the problems encountered, as we have seen, were the clear declamation of the text, effective word-setting, the achievement of contrast and variety throught hte use of many devices, and an efffective means of unifying the work as a whole. The Mass cycle, in addition to enjoying veneration as a tradition, and depsite the problems which it held for a composer, offered him the chance to express himself and demonstrate his mastery of musical skills …

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson Jan 1967

The Depression Years As Depicted By The American Theatre In The 1930'S, Lois Robinson

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to show how various plays written in the 1930's reflected economic, political, religious, social, psychological, moral and ethical attitudes of the depression years. To achieve this and, the writer gathered material from the ten Pulitzer Prize winning plays of the 1930's, as well as other significant works of the decade as mentioned in secondary sources. No effort has been made to fit these plays into the time in which they were written. Instead, the writer has attempted to show the times as they were presented by the dramatists of the thirties.

Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools Jan 1967

Alexander Spotswood's Struggle With His Council, Joan Schools

Honors Theses

The condition of Virginia in 1710 was depressed, both politically and economically. A royal colony, Virginia nevertheless had been establishing her own common laws and "ancient" practices, at the the same time that English control was becoming increasingly inefficient. The situation worsened during the administrations of Edmund Andros and Francis Nicholson and reach a minor climax during the four-year interregnum which began in 1706 and lasted until Spotswood assumed leadership of the government in 1710.

During this period when lack of a royal governor placed colonial affairs in the hands of the Virginia Council and its president, the work of …

Archetypal Patterns Of Death And Rebirth In The Mature Poetry Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Frank Thomas Hanenkrat Jan 1967

Archetypal Patterns Of Death And Rebirth In The Mature Poetry Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Frank Thomas Hanenkrat

Master's Theses

This paper attempts to establish a viewpoint from which the mature poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins may be seen in an informing light. The method of the paper is to trace "exponents" -- that is, images, words or objects that form motifs or patterns in the poetry. Similar to leitmotifs in music, literary motifs are likewise used to set forth themes. By tracing exponents we are "recognizing patterns of images and symbols that lead us to a consistently deepening appreciation of the literature. Image leads to image, idea to idea, until ultimately we are led to experience the 'meaning' of …

The Joyce Menagerie : Animal Imagery In The First Three Novels, David A. Dewitt Jan 1967

The Joyce Menagerie : Animal Imagery In The First Three Novels, David A. Dewitt

Master's Theses

If James Joyce l:ad written novels with largely rural settings, like many written by Lawrence and Faulkner, it would not be particularly unusual to find many references to animals and birds. However, Joyce's novels take place in Dublin, which certainly is not the ideal habitat for large numbers of animals; and yet the number of references to animals and birds in his novels is astounding. The brief portion of Stephen Hero contains nearly fifty primary references, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man has ninety-four, and there are more than eight hundred in Ulysses. Not only is the …

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker Jan 1967

The Effects Of Readership Selectivity On The Reading Of Controversial Material Dealing With The Reader's Personal Prejudices : A Test Of The Theory Of Cognitive Dissonance, John Marshall Tucker

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to test the theory of cognitive dissonance as it relates to a reader's selectivity in reading controversial material involving his personal prejudices or attitudes. Festinger states that forced or accidental exposure to new information which tends to increase dissonance will frequently result in misinterpretation and misperception of the new information by the individual thus exposed in an effort to avoid a dissonance increase. Therefore, cognitive dissonance theory would predict that a person's prejudiced attitude would negatively effect his reading comprehension on material which was disharmonious with his attitude. The dissonance situation examined here is …

A Metabolic Study Of The Isolated Perfused Snake Liver, James E. Turner Jan 1967

A Metabolic Study Of The Isolated Perfused Snake Liver, James E. Turner

Master's Theses

A metabolic study was made on the isolated, perfused liver of Natrix fasciata fasciata (Linnaeus, 1776). Uric acid production, perfusate protein levels, serum protein patterns, perfusate glucose levels, and bile production were evaluated in this study as criteria of liver function.

The perfused liver was found to produce uric acid up through the fourth hour of perfusion. No significant differences (between the perfusions) were found in uric acid production/ gm of liver tissue.

Perfusate protein and glucose levels were found to be of a fluctuating or cyclic nature. There was found to be an inverse relationship between these two levels: …

Classically Conditioned Licking And Acquired Orienting As A Function Of Qualitatively Different Ucs Values : Acquisition, Shifting And Extinction, Jerry Weeks Rudy Jan 1967

Classically Conditioned Licking And Acquired Orienting As A Function Of Qualitatively Different Ucs Values : Acquisition, Shifting And Extinction, Jerry Weeks Rudy

Master's Theses

The purpose of the present study was twofold: (A) to study classically conditioned licking in rats as a function of a qualitative UCS difference, defined as 15% sucrose concentration and 0% concentration (plain tap water); (B) to study acquired orienting as a function of these UCS values. Several aspects of conditioned performance were investigated: (1) the effect of UCS intensity on level of responding during acquisition; (2) the effect of UCS intensity on rate of approach to terminal level of responding; (3) a possible learning performance distinction in appetitive classical conditioning; (4) rate of extinction as a function of the …

United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans Jan 1967

United States Opinion From Munich To The Blitzkreig, Barbara Evans

Honors Theses

In the late nineteen-thirties "isolationism" determined American attitudes toward Europe. Basically, the term, used to describe that period, refers to the beliefs which decreed that the United States should have no part in foreign quarrels.

This paper will attempt to analyze the feelings of the majority of Americans. Many men counseled non-involvement for many reasons, and extremists ranged from the Catholic priest, Father Coughlin, a man with definite pro-German sympathies, to Charles A. Lindberg, who thought that Hitler could not be beaten. Attention here will not be directed at these extremely small fringe groups, but at the "average" American, as …

The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell Jan 1967

The Aaron Burr Trial, Claudia Bell

Honors Theses

The Aaron Burr trial was one of the most interesting cases in American history. Not only was the testimony at th einquiry significant but all events leading to the trial were important. Only those occurrences in Burr's life which led to his trial are described, since personal situations have no bearing on the case. The trial itself has been done with as much detail as possible in order to make the outcome of the inquest understandable.

Virginia's Initial Reactions To The Brown V. Board Of Education Decision, Charles E. Poston Jan 1967

Virginia's Initial Reactions To The Brown V. Board Of Education Decision, Charles E. Poston

Honors Theses

In writing this paper I have examined the initial reaction of Virginia's leaders to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Brown v. Board of Education suit. My study begins with announcement of the decision on May 17, 1952. As the weeks passed on the Commonwealth of Virginia gradually changed her course, experimented with expedients, and set her mind on the course of resistance. the General Assembly proved this fact by adopting the Resolution of Interposition on February 1, 1956. A natural termination date for the paper is reached at this point.

Throughout the paper there has been no effort …
