Incumbency And Turnover In United States House Elections 1934-1974, Vincent A. Borlaug Aug 1976

Incumbency And Turnover In United States House Elections 1934-1974, Vincent A. Borlaug

Theses and Dissertations

This work aims at laying the groundwork for a new approach to Congressional elections: turnover theory. Turnover is simply the change in membership of a Congressional chamber, and occurs in two forms: short-run turnover, in which seats change hand3 over a single election, and long-run turnover, in which incoming classes of Congressmen are decimated over several successive elections. The former is referred to in the body of this work as simply "turnover," the latter as "attrition."

The work is based on original data gathered from the Biographical Directory of the American Congress and other sources. It tests relationships between factors …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Timeout, Punishment And Extinction On An Aggressive Behavior In Children, Diane M. Harder Aug 1976

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Timeout, Punishment And Extinction On An Aggressive Behavior In Children, Diane M. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Ulrich and Flavell (1970) note that although aggression is more a problem today than it has ever been, and although there have been centuries of concern, little has been done to develop effective controls. One conceptual framework for explaining the occurrence and control of aggressive behavior is social learning theory. Bandura (1973) suggests that aggressive behaviors that are reinforced will be strengthened. Several studies with children support this notion (Cowan & Walters, 1963; Davitz, 1952, & Lovaas, 1961). Those aggressive behaviors that are punished or unrewarded will be weakened or eliminated. Hawkins, Peterson, Schweid, and Bijou (1966) suggested that extinction …

Verbal And Imaginal Mediation In Cognitive-Behavior Modification, Steven L. Shearer Aug 1976

Verbal And Imaginal Mediation In Cognitive-Behavior Modification, Steven L. Shearer

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a recent proliferation of outcorie research on cognitive-behavioral treatment packages; however, little attention has been directed toward investigating the active ingredients of such conglomerate packages. The present study was designed to investigate the relative contributions of verbal and imaginal cognitive mediators in reducing publicspeaking anxiety with other treatment factors held constant.

Therapists' manuals were constructed for the two tynes of intervention so that they were identical except for the focus on either verbal or imaginal mediation. The treatments drev/ from techniques suggested by Meichenbaum (1974a), Goldfried (1971), and Suinn (1975a; 1975b), but the parallel format of the …

Expectancy And Apparatus Placebo Effects In An Emg Feedback Task, Ryan Douglas Jagim Aug 1976

Expectancy And Apparatus Placebo Effects In An Emg Feedback Task, Ryan Douglas Jagim

Theses and Dissertations

Although both theoretical and clinical issues are being investigated in the area of biofeedback, the need for the delineation of the potent variables is evident. Research must be designed to separate out the nonspecific placebo factors which are involved in biofeedback procedures. The present study incorporates a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design to investigate the effects of two placebo variables--"expectancy of gain" and an apparatus placebo--on an electromyogram (EMG) feedback task.

Each of the forty-eight male undergraduate subjects had baseline EMG frontalis levels recorded. Two baseline periods were utilized to assess the before and after effe cts of …

Nonverbal Immediacy In Dyads As A Function Of Degree Of Acquaintance And Locus Of Control, Bryan D. Bartels Aug 1976

Nonverbal Immediacy In Dyads As A Function Of Degree Of Acquaintance And Locus Of Control, Bryan D. Bartels

Theses and Dissertations

Mehrabian (1971) has summarized evidence that nonverbal "immediacy" behaviors such as interpersonal distance, gaze, and shoulder orientation are important in communicating interpersonal attraction. Several authors (Duke & Nowicki, 1972; Efran, 1968; Efran & Broughton, 1966) have conceptualized nonverbal immediacy differences between friends and strangers within the context of Social Learning Theory (SLT). Duke and Nowicki, for example, proposed that interpersonal distancing is mediated by specific expectancies in interactions among friends, but by generalized expectancies, such as locus of control (Rotter, 1972), when interactions involve strangers. Some support for this hypothesis is provided by a study showing that locus of control …

Effects Of Psychodrama On Self-Actualization And Perceived Locus Of Control, Stanley W. Rosenthal Aug 1976

Effects Of Psychodrama On Self-Actualization And Perceived Locus Of Control, Stanley W. Rosenthal

Theses and Dissertations

Despite psychodrama’s popularity as a clinical procedure, few adequately controlled outcome studies have been reported. The purpose of this study was to determine whether participants in short-term psycho drama groups, relative to controls would show greater change in selfactualization, locus-of-control, and positive "back-home" behavior reported by significant others. Since protagonists emerged spontaneously from their groups, it was also possible to: (a) determine whether protagonists gained more from the psychodrama experience than less active group members, and (b) identify personality and demographic characteristics associated with participants’ willingness to assume the protagonist role.

Forty-four volunteers from a university community were randomly assigned …

Affective Influences On Nonverbal Immediacy, Steven F. Dreyer Aug 1976

Affective Influences On Nonverbal Immediacy, Steven F. Dreyer

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focused on compensatory relationships among the nonverbal "immediacy" behaviors—interpersonal distance, gaze, trunk lean, and body orientation--which are hypothesized to be important in the communication of interpersonal attitudes (Mehrabian, 1972; Patterson, 1973). Argyle and Dean (1965) have proposed that in social situations there are both approach and avoidance forces (e.g., affilia- tive needs, fear of intimacy) which eventually balance at some level of mutual comfort for the interactants. Once a comfortable intimacy-equilibrium has been established, any change in immediacy by one interactant requires a compensatory adjustment by the other. Since distance, gaze, trunk lean, and body orientation are assumed …

I could control the bleeding process by altering the application techniques through the use of different applicators. The special surface I prepared was made up of styrofoam insulation board, lathe stripping and cotton fabric. The complete preparation of …

The Design And Evaluation Of A Course In Conversational Indonesian, Marit Ann Kana Aug 1976

The Design And Evaluation Of A Course In Conversational Indonesian, Marit Ann Kana

Theses and Dissertations

Of the language learning materials which already exist on Indonesian, the language of nearly one hundred million people in Malaysia and the Republic of Indonesia, none is particularly suited for fieldworkers--that is, whose whose interest in the language is more practical than academic, whose intent is to live and work in Indonesia for an extended period of time. Fieldworkers need to develop the communicational skills of listening and speaking over those of reading and writing. They also need to learn the speech level which is most appropriate for foreigners. In Indonesia this is a formal language style, one which shows …

The Measurment And Reporting Of Human Resources - Its Feasability And Utility, Wesley J. Simonson Jul 1976

The Measurment And Reporting Of Human Resources - Its Feasability And Utility, Wesley J. Simonson

Theses and Dissertations

Financial accounting is dynamic. Its generally accepted accounting principles are the result of an evolutionary process that can be expected to continue. Accounting is not an art which is an end in itself, rather it is an activity with a purpose. It is an information system whose principles change in response to changes in economic and social conditions, to new knowledge, and to demands of users for more serviceable financial information. Human Resource Accounting (H.R.A.) is a part of this evolutionary process. It is a response to a need for information in an area previously considered to be outside the …
