On The Dutch Expletive And Related Syntactic Problems, Kornelis J. Boot
On The Dutch Expletive And Related Syntactic Problems, Kornelis J. Boot
Theses and Dissertations
In his Über das niederländische Adverbialpronomen 'er' Bech argues that the subject expletive of Dutch is inserted when the NP subject has an indefinite article. Bech also claims that the subjective expletive is a local subject and not a logical subject.
This thesis proposes that the use of the subject expletive cannot be based upon a traditional structuralist concept. The author rejects some of Bech's claims and argues for a semantic distinction between definiteness and non-definiteness as a basis for expletive insertion. An attempt is also made to apply the same distinction in accounting for the use of het with …
The Effects Of A Physical Conditioning Program On Selected Measures Of Self Concept, Kirby Franz Weise
The Effects Of A Physical Conditioning Program On Selected Measures Of Self Concept, Kirby Franz Weise
Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-nine female college students participated in a class designed to increase their muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness. Changes were monitored on thirteen physical variables and eleven self concept variables. Nineteen females acted as a "control group," to test whether just the decision to change one's physical fitness affects self concept. They were measured on four self concept variables eight weeks prior to as well as at the beginning and end of their eight-week conditioning course.
During the sixteen week semester the experimental females, as a group, improved significantly on ten of the thirteen physical variables and nine of the eleven …
An Analysis Of The Piscine Parasitofauna Of Four North Dakota Streams, Daniel R. Sutherland
An Analysis Of The Piscine Parasitofauna Of Four North Dakota Streams, Daniel R. Sutherland
Theses and Dissertations
Analyses of the fish, parasites and water of four North Dakota rivers in the Missouri River and Hudson Ba.y drainages were made. A total of 277 fish representing 13 families was. collected from June 28 through November 2, 1975 from 19 sampling stations on the Missouri River below Garrison Dam, the James River above Jamestown Reservoir, the Sheyenne River above Lake Ashtabula and the entire Wild Rice River. The abiotic factors of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, chlorides, nitrates, nitrites, sulphates, orthophosphates, pH and turbidity were determined for each sampling station using Standard Methods or Hach procedures. Of the fish examined …
The Supreme Court, Philosophy And Freedom Of Choice: An Analysis, Walter N. Blevins
The Supreme Court, Philosophy And Freedom Of Choice: An Analysis, Walter N. Blevins
Theses and Dissertations
It is a major contention of this thesis that to argue, debate and philosophize about choice and freedom of choice is one thing, but arguments as to the existence of free choice and claims to its exercise do not mean much, unless within the framework of social and political life the freedom is recognized and protected by some legal authority— in this case, the United States Supreme Court.
This thesis is directed at two areas of political research. First will be a survey and examination of current philosophic literature in order to specify and describe the various models employed in …
Nutrient Relations Of Some Northern Minnesota Forest Communities, Richard H. Bares
Nutrient Relations Of Some Northern Minnesota Forest Communities, Richard H. Bares
Theses and Dissertations
Quantitative information on chemical and physical properties of soils under aspen and jack pine and chemical properties of peat and water under black spruce and tamarack, is limited. The present study quantifies soil particle size, electrical conductivity (E.C.), water soluble and replaceable calcium (Ca) , magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), sodium (Na) , manganese (Mn) and strontium (Sr) concentrations in soils under aspen and jack pine communities. Aspen was found on alkaline clay soils with high Ca and Mg concentrations, and jack pine grew on wel1-drained, acidic, sandy clay loams high in Mn. Organic soils under peat and tamarack were analyzed …
The Attribution Of Fault To Rape Victims: Subject Variables Affecting Blaming, Stephan Podrygula
The Attribution Of Fault To Rape Victims: Subject Variables Affecting Blaming, Stephan Podrygula
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the subject variables involved in the attribution of fault to rape victims. A consideration of attribution theory, in particular Heider's "naive analysis of action," suggests that innocent victims of misfortune will be blamed, however implausible this at first seems. Heider's theory has led to two specific theoretical explanations for blaming, E. Walster's defensiveness hypothesis and Lerner's just world hypothesis, both of which are examined in some detail. The relevant theoretical and experimental literature is reviewed, an assessment of the current standing of these explanations is made, and unresolved issues are raised. Several issues and questions based on …
Processing Pictorial Information: Effects Of Informativeness, Location, And Duration, Richard L. Metzger
Processing Pictorial Information: Effects Of Informativeness, Location, And Duration, Richard L. Metzger
Theses and Dissertations
When an observer views a picture, enough information processing occurs prior to the first eye movement to direct the eyes to an informative portion of the picture. This early processing is influenced by the overall coherency of the picture and the informativeness of the various sections of the picture. The present study tested the hypothesis that the processing of pictorial information proceeds in a hierarchical manner from the most informative sections of a picture to the least informative sections. The hypothesis was evaluated by observing changes in the recognition accuracy of high medium and low informative sections of a picture, …
Frontier In Transition: A Demographic History Of Benton Country, Minnesota, 1850-1870, Stephen J. Schilling
Frontier In Transition: A Demographic History Of Benton Country, Minnesota, 1850-1870, Stephen J. Schilling
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine closely the transformation of a frontier area into a settled community. The demographic history of Benton County, Minnesota, from 1850 to 1870, is examined in detail. The major emphasis is on the structure of the population and its changes over a twenty-year period. The central goal is to determine if there was a pattern to these chanoes. Generalizations applied to the entire frontier will then be compared to this one county to see if they are valid.
The manuscript census was the major source of information. The demographic information for each individual, …
States' Rights And Dualism: An Administrative Study Of Andrew Jackson's Indian Policy, John N. Olsgaard
States' Rights And Dualism: An Administrative Study Of Andrew Jackson's Indian Policy, John N. Olsgaard
Theses and Dissertations
This study attempts to provide the tools necessary for an accurate formulation of Andrew Jackson's administrative policies regarding the removal of the Five Civilized Tribes to the west of the Mississippi River. Such an undertaking integrates the biographical material available on Jackson with the narrative data compiled on the removal of the tribes, in a manner that will promote better understanding of the justifications, politics, and personal biases of the individuals involved.
This paper challenges the predominant view that Jackson was guided by an ideological affinity for states' rights philosophy in his presidential relations with the Indians. Jackson was not …

Effect Of Hemorrhage On Blood Flow To Marrow And Osseous Tissue In Conscious Rabbits, Glenn T. Syftestad
Effect Of Hemorrhage On Blood Flow To Marrow And Osseous Tissue In Conscious Rabbits, Glenn T. Syftestad
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this experiment was to characterize cardiovascular responses in skeletal tissue 15 minutes and 16 hours following reversible hemorrhagic hypotension and to validate a quantitative method for measuring blood flow rates in marrow and bone.
Cardiac output and regional blood flow determinations were made using the radioactive microsphere technique. Microspheres (15 u dia) were injected into unanesthetized rabbits via a chronically implanted left atrial catheter. Blood flow and cardiac output measurements were made by injecting individual microsphere isotopes, each with a different label (®^Sr, 5 1 c r Gr l ^ C e ) , at three specified …

The Design And Evaluation Of A Course In Conversational Indonesian, Marit Ann Kana
The Design And Evaluation Of A Course In Conversational Indonesian, Marit Ann Kana
Theses and Dissertations
Of the language learning materials which already exist on Indonesian, the language of nearly one hundred million people in Malaysia and the Republic of Indonesia, none is particularly suited for fieldworkers--that is, whose whose interest in the language is more practical than academic, whose intent is to live and work in Indonesia for an extended period of time. Fieldworkers need to develop the communicational skills of listening and speaking over those of reading and writing. They also need to learn the speech level which is most appropriate for foreigners. In Indonesia this is a formal language style, one which shows …
Syntactic Combinations Of Verbs In Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota), Michael Robert Scott
Syntactic Combinations Of Verbs In Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota), Michael Robert Scott
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to explain the differences among syntactic combinations of verbs in Lakota Sioux (Teton Dakota). The thesis at first examines the literature on combinations of verbs in Lakota. Thereafter criteria for distinguishing morphological combinations of verbs (compounds) and syntactic combinations of verbs are set forth. The criteria are: potential for replacement, regularity of meaning, and potential for variation in inflection. The emphasis of the thesis is on the classification of syntactic combinations of verbs which it proposes.
The classification contains six classes, two of which are subdivided. The classification is based on the interaction of …
An Investigation Of Modal Auxiliary Verb Acquisition By Children Three To Seven Years Of Age, Cheryl Rae Mayer
An Investigation Of Modal Auxiliary Verb Acquisition By Children Three To Seven Years Of Age, Cheryl Rae Mayer
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was designed to investigate the performance of twenty-one modal and quasi modal auxiliary verbs by normally-developing children aged 3-0 to 6-11 years on two experimental tasks involving each an imitated and elicited language task.
A one-hundred utterance elicited language task in response to toy and picture stimuli and a seventy-eight sentence imitation task were administered to fifteen subjects at each of the four age levels: 3-0 to 3-11 years, 4-0 to 4-11 years, 5-0 to 5-11 years, and 6-0 to 6-11 years.
Statistical analysis of the performance of the four subject groups revealed significant differences among subject …
Some Effects Of Model Status On The Reduction Of Anxiety, Barbara Jane Benner
Some Effects Of Model Status On The Reduction Of Anxiety, Barbara Jane Benner
Theses and Dissertations
Bandura and his colleagues have demonstrated that modeling techniques using fearless "mastery" models can be useful in helping clients overcome irrational fears (Bandura, Grusec and Menlove, 1967; Bandura and Menlove, 1968; Bandura, Blanchard and Ritter, 1969). Later, Meichenbaum (1971) found that initially fearful "coping" models who gradually overcome their fear are more effective than mastery models. However, research on the effects of model status has not investigated coping models. The present study attempted to discern how model status influences the effectiveness of coping models.
Thirty-two female Introduction to psychology students who reported themselves to be speech anxious were asked to …
Judgment Analysis And Learning Disabilities: An Empirical Procedure For Construct Explication, Walter S. Mabee
Judgment Analysis And Learning Disabilities: An Empirical Procedure For Construct Explication, Walter S. Mabee
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this study is the exp1ic ion of the learning disability (LD; construct. Construct explication is a process whereby an abstract variable is made explicit in terms of concrete variables. The purpose of this construct explication is to provide a description as opposed to a cause of the phenomena of learning disabilities.
Research: This study was designed to answer the following research questions: 1. Does a relationship exist between the selected profile variables and each criterion? Which variables are most useful for prediction by this group of LD specialists? 2. Does a relationship exist between the three …
