Static Evolution, Leah R. Scantlen Aug 2022

Static Evolution, Leah R. Scantlen

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In Justin Maxwell's theatrical works, the stasis and stagnation of central characters are importantly made materially evident through costuming. For instance, in the play, Marie Antoinette's Head, the stagnation of civilization and society is explored while time zigzags over two thousand years. The movement of time and epochs is told through a colorful array of costumes, also indicating the growth and evolution of characters in each period. The protagonist, Leonardo, however, remains stuck in 1793. In another of Maxwell's works, the one-man, one-act play Exhausted Paint, the painter Vincent Van Gogh experiences a similar inert characterization. In both …

Chromosome Number Evolution, Phylogeography, And The Effects Of Climate Change On Species Distributions In Polyploid Plant Systems, Courtney H. Babin

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Polyploidy, a term used to describe organisms with cells having more than two paired sets of chromosomes, is a significant driver of diversification among land plants. Over a century of research has advanced our understanding of polyploidization in some taxa, but polyploid organisms remain understudied. In this dissertation, I investigate chromosome number evolution, phylogeographic structure, genetic differentiation, and the effects of climate change on ploidy level distribution using polyploid plant systems. In the first chapter, I inferred a molecular phylogeny of Allium, an economically important genus that includes cultivated crops and ornamentals, to investigate evolutionary transitions in chromosome number …

The Development Of The Interdisciplinary School Violence Prevention Assessment (Isvpa): Exploratory Findings Of A Pilot Study, Lauren B. Clark

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

School violence is a global concern. Although divergent disciplines (i.e., counseling, psychology, criminology, and sociology) have made efforts to address the concern, student violence continues to occur in schools. Currently, threat assessments are widely supported and utilized to prevent school violence by examining the contributing factors to a student’s threatening communication or behaviors. The purpose of the present research was the initial development of the Interdisciplinary School Violence Prevention Assessment (ISVPA) to be used by school personnel with existing threat assessment procedures in order to connect students to counseling services. Several challenges were experienced during the research (i.e., COVID, Hurricane …

Aerodynamics And Vibrations Of A Helicopter Rotor Blade, Mohammad Khairul Habib Pulok Aug 2022

Aerodynamics And Vibrations Of A Helicopter Rotor Blade, Mohammad Khairul Habib Pulok

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The nature of the aerodynamic environment surrounding a helicopter causes a significant amount of vibration to its whole body. Among different sources of vibrations, the aerodynamic loading on the main rotor blade is the major contributor. Therefore, analyzing a rotor blade's vibration characteristics and aerodynamic behavior becomes essential. The vortex characteristics and the wake surrounding a helicopter rotor blade play an important role because they affect the aerodynamic behavior of the rotor blade. An advanced mathematical and computational model of rotor wake and blade vortex gives a better understanding of the helicopter rotor dynamics. This study develops computational models of …

Protein-Protein Interaction Prediction From Language Of Biological Coding, Nayan Howladar Aug 2022

Protein-Protein Interaction Prediction From Language Of Biological Coding, Nayan Howladar

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Protein-protein interactions in a cell are essential to the characterization and performance of various fundamental biological processes. Due to the tedious, resource-expensive, and time-consuming experimental processes, computational techniques to solve protein pair interaction difficulties have emerged as an active research area in bioinformatics. This research seeks to develop an innovative machine learning-based technique that predicts the interaction of a protein pair based on carefully selected input features and exploits information-rich evolutionary information. We developed a protein-protein interaction predictor, PPILS, that leverages the evolutionary knowledge from the protein language model. We examined several distinct neural network architectures: CNN+LSTM, Transformer, Encoder-Decoder, and …

Synthesis, Derivatives, And Applications Of Structured Nanomaterials, Md Shahidul Islam Khan Aug 2022

Synthesis, Derivatives, And Applications Of Structured Nanomaterials, Md Shahidul Islam Khan

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Nanomaterials offer abundant applications not accessible in regular bulk structures. A nanotubular structure (nanoscroll or nanotube) is a 1D architecture with distinct properties varying from that of the parent material. The new structure for example provides more surface area and presents more active sites on the structure exterior, interior, or edges. In this research, different nanotubular materials were targeted including nanopeapods (NPPs), nanoscrolls (NScs), and their various derivatives.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were used as pod materials to grow noble metal NPs in their lumen. The synthesis was done rapidly, within 2 minutes at 55 C. This allows the growth …

A Quantitative Study On The Predictive Ability Of Mcat Scores On The Pre-Clinical Grade Point Averages Of Black Medical Students, Bennetta Horne

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the predictive ability of MCAT scores on the pre-clinical grade point averages of Black medical students. Underrepresented in medicine students, including students of color and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds have often been prevented from pursuing medical education. This is due to the heavy reliance on numeric metrics including undergraduate grade point averages and MCAT scores for admissions decisions. (DeCarvalho et al., 2018; Linville, 2015; Reede, 1999). The research questions employed in this study focused on the relationship between MCAT scores and pre-clinical grades of Black students and the relationship between secondary …
