An Experimental Method For Three-Dimensional Dynamic Stress Analysis, Larry E. Williams
An Experimental Method For Three-Dimensional Dynamic Stress Analysis, Larry E. Williams
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
It is the purpose of this thesis to present an evaluation of a method of experimental dynamic stress analysis utilizing electrical resistance strain gauges located internally. If it can be shown that the proposed experimental procedure is valid, then the transient stress phenomena could be continuously recorded from an internal, integral strain gauge placed at any desired location and in any orientation in a suitable model.

Some Difficulties Which Indian Children Encounter With Idioms In Reading, Maurine Dunn Yandell
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of ethnic group children in the use of English idiomatic expressions as found in standard reading texts in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. The procedure followed was: (1) To prepare a multiple-choice test of idioms used in readers in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in the elementary schools; (2) To administer this idioms test to a selected sample of sixth grade Anglo children to establish percentile ranks as norms for comparison purposes for all sixth graders in Gallup-McKinley County schools; (3) To compare the performance of sixth grade …

The Preaching Of H. Leo Boles, William S. Banowsky
The Preaching Of H. Leo Boles, William S. Banowsky
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
In the rich heritage of rhetoric, pulpit speaking has become one of the significant areas of public address. A wide gap would be left in the history of public address if pulpit orators were excluded from its heritage. In a sense, the history of this nation can be punctuated by a study religious speakers that have helped mold its development.
This study deals with the life and preaching of Henry Leo Boles, whose contribution to the dignity of the spoken word of the American pulpit has been significant. The pulpit ability of H. Leo Boles was no mere accident. He …

Four Aspects Of Milton's Samson Agonistes: Imagery, Comedy, Autobiography, Tragedy, Ronald Kutny
Four Aspects Of Milton's Samson Agonistes: Imagery, Comedy, Autobiography, Tragedy, Ronald Kutny
English Language and Literature ETDs
The lengthily extended figures of speech and the many instances of recurrent synonymous modifiers must be evident even to the most casual reader of John Milton's poetic drama, Samson Agonistes. It is difficult to label, in any simple literary terminology, the technique which I shall discuss and attempt to analyze in this chapter. Therefore, I shall borrow a term from the vocabulary of music in order to indicate, with as much precision as possible, the nature of this technique -- leitmotiv.
An Edition Of William Dean Howells' Literary Friends And Acquaintance With An Introduction Treating Literary Reminiscence As A Genre, David Franklin Hiatt
An Edition Of William Dean Howells' Literary Friends And Acquaintance With An Introduction Treating Literary Reminiscence As A Genre, David Franklin Hiatt
English Language and Literature ETDs
Although the literary reminiscence is a highly specialized kind of autobiography, many of the problems encountered in autobiography are worth considering when one attempts to focus on the reminiscence. Before placing Literary Friends and Acquaintance into the broad stream of literary reminiscence that appeared in America in the latter part of the nineteenth century, I should like to consider the critical problems of the autobiographical mode and the relationship between autobiography and literary reminiscence. Then I should like to suggest an approach to the literary reminiscence and to consider several individual reminiscences using this approach.
Anarchism And The Morality Of Violence, Edward Abbey
Anarchism And The Morality Of Violence, Edward Abbey
Philosophy ETDs
The idea of anarchism is embarrassed, however, by its traditional association with illegality and violence. The word itself is sufficient to evoke visions of riot and revolution, bombings and assassinations, in the minds of many who might otherwise be willing to lend to anarchism a measured degree of sympathetic consideration. If anarchism is to regain the intellectual respectability which it deserves, two preliminary quest ions must be answered 1 (1) To what extent is the traditional association of anarchism and violence warranted? And (2), In so far as the association is a valid one, what arguments have the anarchists presented, …

Teacher Awareness Of Socio-Cultural Differences In Multi-Cultural Classrooms, Horacio Ulibarri
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The public schools in the United States were created to serve all the children of all the people in order that youth might more ably participate in American society. The public schools along with the home, the church, and the community are the primary socializing institutions. With the acceptance of the principle of educating the whole child, the functions of the schools have been greatly expanded into a multitude of services are primarily aimed to help the individual child develop to his full potential. The practical application, however, may be somewhat different. Upon closer analysis, one may find great discrepancies …
