European Immigration Restriction, 1882-1924, Frank Defina Jul 1959

European Immigration Restriction, 1882-1924, Frank Defina

History ETDs

This thesis is a study and evaluation on the premises and charges underlying the National Origins and related quota systems which restricted the so-called "new" immigrants from southern and eastern Europe. Nativists charged that these new immigrants were racially and culturally inferior to the "old" type immigrants from northern and western Europe--the Anglo-Saxons, Teutons or Aryans--and therefore harmful to economic, social and other factors of American culture. Concomitant with these broad premises were more specific charges or theories of harm such as "lower intelligence quotients," and "higher crime rates," which convinced Americans and their congress in the early 1920's of …

Nevada Place Names: Origin And Meaning, Helen S. Carlson Jun 1959

Nevada Place Names: Origin And Meaning, Helen S. Carlson

English Language and Literature ETDs

This study was initiated in 1953 with the preparation of a critical bibliography of Nevada place name materials, written as a seminar paper under the direction of Professor Charlton Laird at the University of Nevada for submission to Professor Thomas Matthews Pearce, editor of "Names and Places," Western Folklore. Subsequent investigation into names of the Comstock Lode mines, a thesis prepared at the University of Nevada, and names along the line of nineteenth-century railroads in Nevada, published in Western Folklore (April, 1956), led to this state survey of some 3,000 names, representing perhaps a tenth of the name body of …

A Distributional Check-List Of New Mexican Mammals, Arthur H. Harris Jun 1959

A Distributional Check-List Of New Mexican Mammals, Arthur H. Harris

Biology ETDs

Vernon Bailey's Mammals of New Mexico is not a satisfactory source of data for many studies which directly or indirectly involve distributions of mammals within New Mexico. The present work is an attempt to provide such a source--to bring together in usable form all published records of occurrence within the state for each species of mammal that is known to occur in New Mexico and also to make available such unpublished records as are present in the University of New Mexico Collection of Vertebrates. Some additional information on names, life-zone preferences, and subspecies to be found within the state has …

Conversion Of Electromagnetic Waves Into Magnetohydrodynamic Waves At The Interface Of A Dielectric And Incomprehensible Fluid, Ralph L. Marsten Jun 1959

Conversion Of Electromagnetic Waves Into Magnetohydrodynamic Waves At The Interface Of A Dielectric And Incomprehensible Fluid, Ralph L. Marsten

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Consider space to be separated into two semi-infinite regions by a rigid boundary. On one side lies medium A--a perfect, rigid, dielectric, with electric permittivity € and magnetic permeability µ. On the other side is medium B; a perfect, fluid, perfectly conducting, also with magnet permeability µ. Throughout all spaces exist a uniform static magnetic field H.

Now such a fluid as medium B is capable of supporting a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave; and of course a perfect dielectric will support an electromagnetic (EM) wave. Suppose then, that a uniform plane EM wave in medium A is incident at arbitrary angle …

Four Stories From The History Of Carthage, Donald W. Bozeman Jun 1959

Four Stories From The History Of Carthage, Donald W. Bozeman

English Language and Literature ETDs

As a child I remember reading in ancient history about the colorful, violent, and tragic end of a powerful city in northern Africa--Carthage. The story fired my imagination when I first encountered it but was merely committed to memory amidst the sweep of many other subjects and interests at that impressionable age. With the passage of time the name of Hannibal recurrently appeared, and I read various accounts of his crossing the Alps.

Soon after I became interested in creative writing, the dramatic story of Carthage once again struck me. I began in my leisure to study Carthaginian history--what fragments …

A Comparative Study Of The Reading Achievement And The Influence Of Environmental Changes Of Second Graders From Military And Civilian Families, Ethel Mary Moore Jun 1959

A Comparative Study Of The Reading Achievement And The Influence Of Environmental Changes Of Second Graders From Military And Civilian Families, Ethel Mary Moore

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

The purpose of this investigation is to make a comparative study of some reading achievement factors as shown by second grade children from military and civilian backgrounds, and an analysis of some factors of the children's environment which may explain these differences.

A Reactor Transfer Function Analyzer, Earl O. Swickard Jr Jun 1959

A Reactor Transfer Function Analyzer, Earl O. Swickard Jr

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

This thesis describes the design of a device for determining the transfer function of a nuclear reactor. A number of different methods have been successfully employed for this purpose but were, in some cases, tedious or required the use of delicately balanced components. The equipment described computes values which are simply related to the values of the transfer function and is operable over a frequency range of about 1000:1. The time required to obtain data for one frequency point is two minutes or less. No precise adjustment is necessary during operation.

A Study Of The Radioactive Decay Of The Two Isomers Of Pd109 And Of The Associated Low-Lying Levels Of Ag109, John W. Starner Jun 1959

A Study Of The Radioactive Decay Of The Two Isomers Of Pd109 And Of The Associated Low-Lying Levels Of Ag109, John W. Starner

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The radiations of Pd109 (13.45 ± 0.01 hr) and Pd109m(4.69 ± 0.01 min) have been investigated with a coincidence scintillation spectrometer and a solenoidal beta-ray spectrometer. Pd109m was observed to have only one mode of decay: a 188-kev (E3) isomeric transition to Pd109. The principal beta-ray group (>99.9%) of Pd109 was found to have an end-point energy of 1.025 ± 0.005 Mev. Gamma rays of the following energies (kev) and approximate intensities (photons/105 disintegrations) were observed to acccmpany the decay of Pd109: 773 (4), 707 (2), 643 (10), 602 …

A Study Of The Application Of Digital Computers For Controlling Vehicle Traffic At A Signalized Intersection, John V. Wait Jun 1959

A Study Of The Application Of Digital Computers For Controlling Vehicle Traffic At A Signalized Intersection, John V. Wait

Civil Engineering ETDs

This study outlines a method whereby a small, specialized "on-line" digital computer could be used to control urban vehicle traffic at a signalized intersection. In the basic system proposed, the computer uses as input data a "history" of the instantaneous vehicle flow, in terms of number of cars arriving and arrival time. The data are stored for a period of 240 seconds in a magnetic drum memory. Once each 1/2 second, the computer examines the arrival pattern of cars and compares the delay being imposed on the waiting cars versus the delay which would be imposed on the cars on …

Method For Interpreting Extensive Air Shower Data, Darrell C. Kent Jun 1959

Method For Interpreting Extensive Air Shower Data, Darrell C. Kent

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Three major topics are discussed in this thesis. The first of these has immediate application to analysis of air shower data which is presently being gathered by two large scintillation tanks located immediately behind the University of New Mexico physics building. The data with which the other two topics are concerned cannot be gathered with present equipment, but these preliminary calculations have been performed in anticipation of the installation of the appropriate apparatus.

Cosmopolitan Attitudes In The Works Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Elizabeth Louise Scone Jun 1959

Cosmopolitan Attitudes In The Works Of Emilia Pardo Bazán, Elizabeth Louise Scone

Spanish and Portuguese ETDs

The word "cosmopolitan", "citizen of the world," denotes, in its broadest sense, one whose interests are not limited to the confines of his own country and culture. But when we consider the role of the Spanish cosmopolitan in any age, we are obliged to confront the old spectre of Spain's isolation from the rest of Europe, of a Spain which gazes only into the mirror of eternity.

The Influence Of British Capital On The Cattle Industry Of The Panhandle-Plains Area Of West Texas And Eastern New Mexico, Martyn R. P. Naylor Jun 1959

The Influence Of British Capital On The Cattle Industry Of The Panhandle-Plains Area Of West Texas And Eastern New Mexico, Martyn R. P. Naylor

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

This thesis was written with the purpose in mind of bringing together in one place the available data on British capital invested in the cattle industry of the Panhandle-Plains area of West Texas and eastern New Mexico. There seems to have been little awareness in this region of the part played in the development of the Southwest funds from England and Scotland, and so much a study was felt necessary to fill the gap that existed in the history of the cattle industry.
