‘If You're Gonna Do It, Use A Condom. Otherwise, Just Don't Do It’: Exploring Contraceptive Messaging Effects In Young Adult Beliefs And Attitudes, Cecily Jones

Communications Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The overturn of the US Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision in June of 2022 led to 41 states with partial or total abortion bans (Guttmacher Institute, 2024). Additionally, in 2023 SCOTUS agreed to hear a case on the access to Mifepristone, a prescription drug commonly referred to as the “abortion pill” (NPR, 2023). Threatened and waning access to various forms of reproductive healthcare led to the question of how these topics, such as contraception, are being framed and whether these messages affect audiences. The added layer of inequitable access to …

Biomechanics Of Wheelchair Basketball, Martins Amaechi May 2024

Biomechanics Of Wheelchair Basketball, Martins Amaechi

Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between spatiotemporal dynamics and wrist kinematics during wheelchair basketball turns, with a focus on potential links to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Additionally, we aimed to compare upper limb joint kinematics obtained from Theia3D, a markerless motion capture system, against those from a traditional marker-based system. The study comprised two phases. In the first phase, 14 participants—12 able-bodied individuals and two wheelchair basketball athletes—performed propulsion exercises on an 8-meter pathway using a sports wheelchair. Data on upper limb joint kinematics were collected for both the markerless and marker-based systems to evaluate …

Assessing The Theoretical Correlates Of Sexual And Physical Victimization In Adulthood, Morgan Goslar May 2024

Assessing The Theoretical Correlates Of Sexual And Physical Victimization In Adulthood, Morgan Goslar

Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations

As research on victimization continues to adapt, scholars have begun to examine how certain variables in childhood affect the likelihood of being victimized in adulthood—much of which is focused on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Studying the impact of early experiences on later victimization outcomes is important for the field so practitioners can intervene early in an individual’s life before they experience further trauma. However, past research has neglected to use a comprehensive approach (e.g., using multiple theoretical frameworks, assessing the frequency of ACE occurrences). The current study addresses these gaps in the literature by assessing the impact of variables related …

The Beast With Many Heads: Situational And Dispositional Differences In Physiological, Subjective, And Behavioral Responses To Social Rejection, Ellyn C. Maese May 2024

The Beast With Many Heads: Situational And Dispositional Differences In Physiological, Subjective, And Behavioral Responses To Social Rejection, Ellyn C. Maese

Psychology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Threats to humans’ deep-rooted social needs are associated with strong physiological, emotional, and behavioral responses that are linked to systems for physical pain responses. Yet, prior research has also revealed inconsistencies in responses to social threats, which may be related to differences in situational or dispositional factors. In exploration of these potential explanations, the proposed research aims to investigate physiological, subjective, and behavioral responses to two distinct types of social threat experiences. This study will involve analyzing data collected from a sample of 127 students at a midwestern state university who participated in a laboratory experiment in which they faced …

Uterine Fibroids: A Silent Crisis, Diana Mwikisa May 2024

Uterine Fibroids: A Silent Crisis, Diana Mwikisa

Communications Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Black women in the United States are three times more likely to have uterine fibroids compared to any other ethnicity. Existing studies estimate that about 80 to 90 percent of Black women will develop fibroids by age 50. Uterine fibroids are “non-cancerous tumors found in the uterus” (Orellana et al., 2022, p.1184). The exact cause of uterine fibroids is not fully understood, and more research is needed to gain insight into the causes of this debilitating disease (Yu et al., 2018). The purpose of the study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of Black women with …

Radically Feminist Or Monstrously Feminine?: Witches And Goddesses In Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018), Lindsay Macumber Apr 2024

Radically Feminist Or Monstrously Feminine?: Witches And Goddesses In Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018), Lindsay Macumber

Journal of Religion & Film

Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of Suspiria explicitly and implicitly incorporates two connected myths, witchcraft and goddess centered matriarchal prehistory. The fact that each of these myths have been claimed by feminists in myriad ways may explain Guadagnino’s claim that Suspiria is a great feminist film that escapes the male gaze. In this article, I argue that Guadagnino’s representation of these myths lays bare their misogynistic origins and perpetuates, rather than subverts, patriarchal power structures.

Mary Magdalene On Film In Twenty-First Century: A Feminist Theological Critique, Mary Ann Beavis Apr 2024

Mary Magdalene On Film In Twenty-First Century: A Feminist Theological Critique, Mary Ann Beavis

Journal of Religion & Film

Since the turn of the millennium, several films (and one popular TV series) featuring Mary Magdalene as a significant character, or even as the central character, have been produced. A few, specifically Son of God (2104), The Chosen (2017-), and Mary Magdalene (2019), gained a wide audience through some combination of theatrical release, television, and streaming services. Unlike earlier productions that unfailingly portrayed her conventionally as a penitent prostitute, these and other, less well-known films of recent decades have departed from this traditional Magdalene. This is no doubt due, among other things, to the influence of feminist theology and biblical …

Examining The Relationship Between Victim Self-Protective Behaviors And Sexual Assault Case Processing, Caralin C. Branscum Apr 2024

Examining The Relationship Between Victim Self-Protective Behaviors And Sexual Assault Case Processing, Caralin C. Branscum

Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations

Sexual assault, a severely underreported crime in the US, is hindered by negative interactions between victims and criminal justice system actors’, contributing to high case attrition rates. Accordingly, understanding factors impacting case outcomes, such as criminal justice system actors’ perceptions of the victim and decision-making, is crucial. Victim self-protective behaviors—which are the range of actions, reactions, or strategies employed by individuals to mitigate or prevent harm from a crime, such as sexual assault—lack sufficient research on their impact on case processing. To fill this gap, this study analyzed 469 reported sexual assault cases, employing bivariate and multivariate analyses to assess …

Experiences Of Recent Nebraska Stem Teachers Who Have Left Teaching, Courtney N. Matulka Mar 2024

Experiences Of Recent Nebraska Stem Teachers Who Have Left Teaching, Courtney N. Matulka

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Teacher shortages in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields have long been a concern, yet contemporary challenges present a unique predicament. Despite historical recruitment successes, the persistence of this issue has led to temporary solutions that often fall short of addressing the root causes. Consequently, school districts resort to hiring individuals lacking proper certification or expertise, or relying on substitutes, to fill crucial STEM teaching positions. Student academic achievements can be impacted as effective STEM instruction demands not only a deep understanding of the subject matter content but also robust pedagogical practices. To shed light on the complexities surrounding …

Functional Outcomes Of Noninvasive Sensory Feedback In Upper Limb Prostheses: A Meta-Analysis, Libby Caldwell Mar 2024

Functional Outcomes Of Noninvasive Sensory Feedback In Upper Limb Prostheses: A Meta-Analysis, Libby Caldwell

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Noninvasive sensory feedback applies vibration or pressure to the residual limb and is thought to improve the functionality of upper limb prostheses. However, the efficacy of this approach has not been sufficiently investigated, particularly regarding actual amputee efficacy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional benefits of noninvasive sensory feedback in upper limb prostheses through a meta-analysis. Electronic databases (MEDLINE, Web of Science, and PubMed) were searched up to October 2022 using the following search terms: (prosthesis OR prosthetic) AND (hand OR arm OR forearm OR transradial OR “upper limb” OR “upper extremity) AND (tactile OR haptic …

Knyaw/Karen Womanhood, Generational Healing And The Interplay Of Faith, Genocide, Gender Roles, And Education In The Face Of Health Diagnosis, Moo Law Eh Soe

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

During the fall semester of 2023, my honors project aimed to provide representation and shed light on the challenges Knyaw/Karen women encounter as part of their womanhood in traditional and Western communities. The issues are emphasized when these women receive life-altering health diagnosis that not only alters their identities but also requires them to step beyond the invisible parameters of what it means to be a Knyaw/Karen woman. It's worth noting that all the women I interviewed were immigrants from the Thai-Burma Border refugee Camps where Indigenous Knyaw people have been facing at least 70 years of genocide. The project …

Comparison Of Marker-Based And Marker-Less Motion Capture On Kinematic Outcomes; Comparison Of Lower Limb 3d Kinematic Outcomes Between Markerless And Marker-Based Systems During Overground Walking In Children With Cerebral Palsy (Cp) (Irb:8022-21-Ep), Jutharat Poomulna

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The Gait Deviation Index (GDI) serves as a summary measure to evaluate gait pathology in children with cerebral palsy (CP), with a score ≥ 100 denoting typical gait and each 10-point difference representing one standard deviation from the mean. While marker-based (MB) motion capture, the gold standard for 3D gait analysis, has limitations for widespread clinical use, leading to the exploration of video-based markerless motion capture, specifically Theia3D. Theia3D has been validated for accuracy and reliability in healthy adults; however, its clinical applicability is limited. This study aims to compare the impact of different motion capture systems on GDI scores …

This dissertation presents a mixed-data investigation aiming to comprehensively understand math anxiety in teachers. Math anxiety is defined as “feelings of tension and anxiety that interfere with the manipulation of numbers and solving of mathematics problems in a variety of ordinary life and academic situations” (Richardson & Suinn, 1972, p. 551). The study focuses on rural Nebraska district comparing practicing Elementary and Secondary teachers on the variable of Mathematics Anxiety.
