Gender Differences In The Effect Of Child Maltreatment On Criminal Activity Over The Life Course, Ryan E. Spohn Dec 2000

Gender Differences In The Effect Of Child Maltreatment On Criminal Activity Over The Life Course, Ryan E. Spohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This paper adds to a growing body of knowledge regarding the criminal consequences of childhood victimization. A prospective research design is used to compare a group of maltreated youth to a matched control group in order to determine the extent to which child abuse and neglect influence both juvenile delinquency and adult crime. Controlling for race and sex, abused and neglected children are more likely to have a juvenile arrest record. In addition, controlling for involvement in juvenile crime, child maltreatment also influences adult criminality. Motivated by the findings of qualitative studies focusing on female offenders, I examine gender differences …

The Douglas County Drug Court: A Comparison Of Recidivism Rates Between Drug Court Participants And Traditionally Adjudicated Drug Offenders, Erika Davis Frenzel Dec 2000

The Douglas County Drug Court: A Comparison Of Recidivism Rates Between Drug Court Participants And Traditionally Adjudicated Drug Offenders, Erika Davis Frenzel

Student Work

Over the years there have been large increases in the number of drug offenders arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced to prison. These increases have lead to an overload of the criminal justice system. This overload prompted states to develop new responses to substance use and drug-related crime. One such innovation is the drug treatment court, which combines accountability and treatment. The goal of these courts is to reduce recidivism and substance use among drug-involved criminal offenders. This study uses data from Douglas County (Nebraska) to compare recidivism rates for participants in the Douglas County Drug Court and traditionally adjudicated drug offenders. …

Humor At The Work Site: An Exploration Of Relationships Among Sense Of Humor And Supervisor Subordinate Age, Gender And Type Of Humor, Susan Stibal

Student Work

This thesis attempted to replicate the results of the Decker and Rotondo (1999) study by using a similar survey, but testing in three different work settings using a broader age demographic. The results of this study confirm many of the findings by Decker and Rotondo (1999), as well as the findings of Thorson and Powell (1993,1996, 1997) concerning the Multidimensional Sense of Humor Scale (MSHS). The present research revealed that the MSHS scores were age and gender neutral, suggesting that sense of humor in people does not vary according to gender or age. The research also showed that the use …

The Ties That Bind: Friendship Development In An Information Technology Work Environment, Courtney E. Fristoe Dec 2000

The Ties That Bind: Friendship Development In An Information Technology Work Environment, Courtney E. Fristoe

Student Work

Examination of workplace friendship development is currently an important emerging research area. This study investigated the factors and communication changes that impacted workplace friendship development in an information technology organization. Additionally, the level to which relationship partners agreed about the factors and communication changes their relationship had experienced was also examined. Findings suggested proximity, shared tasks, perceived similarity, and increased openness were important in early friendship development. Further sharingof personal information, such as life experiences and spending time together outside of work, brought friends even closer. Increased closeness over time lead relationship partners to be considered almost best friends. The …

Correlation Of A Social Skills Self-Rating Survey And A Teacher Rating Inventory For Students At A Residential School For The Deaf, James Thomas Haley

Student Work

Students aged 12 to 15 at a Midwestern residential school for the deaf completed the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Youngsters (MESSY- DHH). Faculty at the school completed the Meadow Kendall Social Emotional Assessment Inventory (SEAI) to rate the behavior of the same students. Pearson’s correlations were conducted to determine if relationships existed between scores on the MESSY-DHH and the SEAI. Results indicated inconsistent correlations between scores on the MESSY-DHH and individual scale scores on the SEAI.

Reading The Lives Of Others: The Winton Homes Library Project A Cultural Studies Analysis Of Critical Service Learning For Education, Matt Musucci, Adam Renner Oct 2000

Reading The Lives Of Others: The Winton Homes Library Project A Cultural Studies Analysis Of Critical Service Learning For Education, Matt Musucci, Adam Renner

Service Learning, General

This article examines the value and usefulness of expanding a particular approach to service learning in an educational setting. As a result of participating in a graduate seminar that combined cultural studies with service learning, reflecting on involvement in a service project, and a careful reading of relevant literature, the authors advocate for a more critical engagement with the reality of overwhelming social injustice. Moreover, the authors suggest a four-step framework (critical service learning), which is informed by both cultural studies and critical pedagogy. Finally, the authors argue for the adaptation of this framework into the school curriculum-thereby providing students …

Buddhism, Christianity, And The Matrix: The Dialectic Of Myth-Making In Contemporary Cinema, James L. Ford Oct 2000

Buddhism, Christianity, And The Matrix: The Dialectic Of Myth-Making In Contemporary Cinema, James L. Ford

Journal of Religion & Film

This essay analyzes the recent film The Matrix from the perspective of modern-day myth-making. After a brief plot summary of the film, I note the well-documented parallels to the Christian messianic narrative of Jesus. I then go on to highlight the often overlooked parallels to the Buddhist existential analysis of the human condition. In particular, I note a remarkable resonance between The Matrix and the fourth century (C.E.) philosophical school of Buddhism known as Yogacara. By highlighting the syncretic or combinative nature of the film's symbolic narrative, I submit The Matrix as a cinematic example of the dialectical process of …

Magnolia And The Signs Of The Times: A Theological Reflection, Mario Degiglio-Bellemare Oct 2000

Magnolia And The Signs Of The Times: A Theological Reflection, Mario Degiglio-Bellemare

Journal of Religion & Film

This piece attempts to articulate a theological reading of the film Magnolia, directed by P.T. Anderson. The author endeavours to locate God within the matrix of human relationality in the film. The God depicted in Magnolia, argues the author, is the God of liberation, the God who took the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery. This God of Exodus gives signs of imminent freedom to people living within systems of captivity which crush dreams and deny the flourishing of hope. Magnolia depicts the lives of people tossed aside by the television industry in Los Angeles. God's signs, however, remind …

Global Forces And Latino Population Growth In The Midwest: A Regional And Subregional Analysis, Lourdes Gouveia, Rogelio Saenz Oct 2000

Global Forces And Latino Population Growth In The Midwest: A Regional And Subregional Analysis, Lourdes Gouveia, Rogelio Saenz

Latino/Latin American Studies Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The last decade has seen a significant growth of the Latino population in the Midwest, particularly in rural communities. We discuss the forces that have stimulated the growth of the Latino population in the region. We use data from the Current Population Surveys (1988-1997) to assess the demographic and employment growth of the Latino population in the Midwest. Because of the limitations of secondary data, we also illustrate the growth of the Latino population with evidence from Nebraska and a selected area of the state. Data analysis suggests that population estimates of the Latino population generated by the US Bureau …

Fargo: A Biblical Morality Play, Mary Ann Beavis Oct 2000

Fargo: A Biblical Morality Play, Mary Ann Beavis

Journal of Religion & Film

Although it is ostensibly a secular film in which religion is absent, Joel and Ethan Coen's Fargo (1996) can be interpreted as a Biblical Morality Play. In particular, the development of the Biblical Virtues of Law, Wisdom and Family are personified in the character of the police chief Marge Gunderson, and the corresponding Sins of Lawlessness, Foolishness, Greed and Betrayal of Family are personified by the criminals Carl Showalter, Gaear Grimsrud and Jerry Lundegaard.

Computer Mediated Communication And Student Perception Of Instructor Immediacy, Heath V. Tuttle Aug 2000

Computer Mediated Communication And Student Perception Of Instructor Immediacy, Heath V. Tuttle

Student Work

This study examined the relationship between student perception of teacher verbal immediacy and mode of class instruction. Comparisons were made between traditional classrooms and on-line classrooms in relation to student gender, student age, student ethnicity, and student comfort level with a computer. Results indicated that mode of instruction and student gender had significant effects on student perception of teacher verbal immediacy. Discussion focused on student gender and student age, and how CMC may force scholars to re-examine the definition of immediacy.

Secrecy In The Organizational Romance, Debra R. Kelly Aug 2000

Secrecy In The Organizational Romance, Debra R. Kelly

Student Work

This thesis examined why and how organizational romance participants keep their relationships secret. Disclosure to others in the organization was also examined. The literature review focused on definitions and antecedent conditions of organizational romance, the decision to enter into the relationship, internal dynamics of the relationship, external impacts of the relationship, coworker reaction, and management's perspective. The first research question asked why do organizational romance participants keep their relationship a secret from others? The second research question asked how do organizational members keep an organizational romance secret from fellow associates?! The third research question asked what behavioral changes occur amid …

Development Of Commitment In Young Children's Best Friendships, Andrea L. Kelp Aug 2000

Development Of Commitment In Young Children's Best Friendships, Andrea L. Kelp

Student Work

Although the amount of research conducted on children’s friendships is large, the specific characteristic of friendship commitment has received little attention to date. At what age and to what extent commitment is present in children’s friendships is the main focus of this study. Students in grades 2 through 7 completed a demographic questionnaire, the Commitment and Satisfaction Scale, the Children’s Self-Efficacy for Peer Interaction Scale, The Network of Relationships Inventory, and they also responded to hypothetical vignettes. Of particular interest were the effects of children’s age, gender, friendship reciprocity, self-efficacy and friendship satisfaction on their friendship commitment levels. Analyses of …

Latino Police Officers: Negotiating The Police Role, Dawn M. Irlbeck Jul 2000

Latino Police Officers: Negotiating The Police Role, Dawn M. Irlbeck

Student Work

Tension and mistrust have characterized relations between the police and Latino communities. Civil rights leaders and community groups argue that increased employment of Latino police officers will improve the quality of police services, based on the assumption that Latino officers will be better able to relate to Latino community members and will not engage in discriminatory behavior. This assumption presupposes that Latinos are a relatively homogenous group, readily encompassed by clear ethnic boundaries and a shared sense of ethnic identity. In addition to presupposing a unidimensional “Latino” identity, it also presumes that Latino police officers share a common vision of …

A Police Probation Partnership: One City's Response To Serious Habitual Juvenile Offending, Kimberly D. Hassell Jul 2000

A Police Probation Partnership: One City's Response To Serious Habitual Juvenile Offending, Kimberly D. Hassell

Student Work

The purpose of this study is to explore a police/probation collaboration in a large Western police department. While many of these collaborative approaches to crime and disorder have been formed, there has been scant empirical research conducted on their effectiveness. As such, this study explores the implementation and impact of a formal collaboration on both the police and probation departments, the juveniles targeted by the collaboration and the local juvenile justice system. In addition, this thesis addresses whether police and probation departments can maintain coordinating relationships to equitably, efficiently and effectively control delinquency in one Western city. This study is …
